My Nikon D40 Pictures - woohoo!

wow great shots! whats the difference between the D40 and D40x? i wish i could take those types of shots of my fish but with my old point and shoot camera they all come out blurry. I was first looking at the D80 it felt very nice in my hands but the price was a bit high for me..after seeing what the D40 can do i may pick this one up soon :)

kylekinder - awesome. thanks for the pointers. i'll give those a try and see what happens. still trying to understand the relations between all of those settings and how one can affect another.

jpndave - yea..just the 18-55mm lens it came with.

tremendo - i just turned the knob to the sports setting..focused and snapped.

Mikeeee - pictures with a digital SLR just blows any point and shoot camera away. i decided on the D40 and glad i got it. yea..this is with the stock lens.

thanks for your replay arcab4 i decided for the d40 one because it was the only one compare to the xti in good reviews is small and last they gave me a free printer dslr and for domes book all for 480$ not bad i really like this camera is grate i just need to learn how to adjust it good

question for D40 lens owners about lens choices.

after i learn more about the camera, i thought i would eventually like to get the 18-200mm lens (camera comes with 18-55mm). that would give me the "best" of both worlds in a way. i get the regular shots and the longer zoom. this lens would be $$$ (cost me more than the camera!)

but ofcourse, i love to take macro shots (of my fish tank!) so someone suggested going with a macro lens and then the 55-200mm lens instead. this way i get way better macro shots and then for daily use, the 55-200mm would give me the zoom i wanted.

so my question is...would it be safe to say that the 18-55mm compared to the 55-200mm would be about the same except with a longer zoom? like i wouldn't be hampered and wanting to switch back to the 18-55mm lens for regular shots.

that way i could get the macro lens and a zoom lens for almost the same price as the 18-200mm.

I have the 18-55/3.5 and the 55-200/4

the 55-200/4 is a low end lens (only 225 new) and you see it available used all the time when people upgrade to a faster lens

I got mine for 160 used in perfect condition

if I were you I'd look for a used 55-200 to get your zoom and go with the tamron 90 for your macro

honestly, if you are willing to spend a little extra money I'd skip the 55-200 and get the 70-300/4 ($479 new, remember you need AF-S or AF-I....the regular AF version is only $200 new)

I would not give up 18-55, imagine only having that full 55 zoom all the time, you will want wider angle for some things

the tamron 90 macro lens is said to be great, so that will satisfy your macro wants

the tamron 90 is my next lens purchase

edit: summary

I'd do either of these options
1. keep 18-55, buy 55-200 and tamron 90

or, more expensive, but "better" option, IMO:
2. keep 18-55, buy 70-300 and tamron 90

option 2 will cost you about $300 extra over option 1

Just to share some photo taken by my D40 with kit lens 18~55mm ...

wow really nice pics what setings you use seng

just set at "P" mode and adjust the aperture ... actually I'm also a newbie for DSLR photography ... :p

nice pictures seng..

latazyo - thanks for the advice on the lens. i'm still debating on which ones to get (55-200mm or 70-300mm). :)

i needed some suggestions from you guys about taking pictures of a dark tank on a fast moving fish (arowana).

settings for this picture was:

No Flash
Focal Length: 40mm
F Number: F/5.6
Exposure Time: 1/30sec
Aperture Priority

this was the best i could do right now....but it's still pixelated and not very clear.
