My Ocellaris breeding thread

Great thread! Even if a lot of people aren't commenting, keep documenting! Nice job. Sorry to hear about the male. The designer clowns are pricey but some look awesome. Others look only so so.

Keep up the good work. I know it's a lot of work. I tried it a few years ago and gave up.
 
My wife has become attached to the clowns, now she is having second thoughts about selling the clowns. What am I going to do with 260+ clowns?!?!?

Lol, leave it to the woman to get attached to the silly clowns :) Tell her you can keep them all but they need a 1200g tank and you want to set it up in front of the TV, maybe she will reconsider, that or you get a really big tank.
 
Using the 5 gallons per inch of fish guideline, 260 clowns at about 2.5 inches each that is about 650 inches of fish, that needs a 3,250 gallon tank! I would need like 3 tons of live rock? That is crazy.

One note, the little ones have been fed TDO since they've been weaned of NHBS. Their orange coloration is striking compared to the older guys who have only been in Astaxanthin rich foods for about 1.5 months. They are getting darker and more vibrant, but the little ones are amost "neon" like in brightness. When I move them over to growout, I will be able to better compare. I'm moving them to C1 this week which is what the older guys eat now, though they are getting close to C2 now. So to everyone feeding litte ones, just go with TDO and or supplement with Cyclop eeze, it is a BIG difference in coloration.
 
Wow, well done. Coming from the freshwater world, I've tried my hand at raising fry and breeding freshwater fish, I must admit it is not easy even with freshwater fish. You made some great progress and have some great documentation that will come in handy for all the other breeders out there.

Another approach---

"Honey, to keep the fish we'll need to get a few new aquariums. As they get older they need to be no more than two per tank. I just found a place on-line that will sell us 130 10gal. tanks for a GREAT price. Shall I click on 'order now'?"

Please let me know how this works out (if you can still type! :lol2: )!
 
Used to breed discus about 15 years ago. At one point I was selling around 50 or 60 per week to local stores, but then my primary business got too busy and I had to stop doing it as it took a lot of my time. Also bred freshwater angelfish before the discus, but the discus earned enough to pay for the hobby. So I stopped the angelfish. The next ones to try were to be African Cichilds like Pseudotropheous and brichardi, but never got to it. I honestly didn't think I would ever be able to do saltwater, but with the easier availability of zooplankton cultures, that changed the game.

I'm thinking that in order to make it easier on me with water changes and all, I'd have to move to the florida keys with a house next to the water so I can have unlimited water volume, how about the atlantic ocean as my sump?

Excellent work! I just finished reading thought the entire thread. I have a pair of Black Ice that aren't laying yet but should sometime this year. I'm inspired now to start setting up a breeding system. I know you've posted a list of some of our setup. Have you added anything? What size sponge filters are you using? Any pictures of your setup would be appreciated.

For now everything is put away until I can get a male for my female. I'm using sponge filters rated for 40 gallons. The growout is using 2 of them plus a sump, uv sterilizer, protein skimmer, and a pair of HOB power filters. It's probably overkill but with 260 or so clowns in the 55 gallon growout, you can never have too much filtration.

On marine breeder they say anywhere between 7-9 clownfish per gallon through selling size in growout is perfectly acceptable, so in your 55g you should be able to safely keep 385-495 juveniles to 1inch.

Sounds crazy to me but you probably don't have to worry about it as much, although overkill never killed anything :)

I can't wait to get more juveniles to load up my 55g, Plenty of BTA's in there and I can't wait to see all the juveniles cruising around in them.
