My octo finally posed for some CLEAR shots (warning: large files)... still needs ID!

Hi, as you regulars know, I'm still seeking an ID, but I got much better pictures today. He's been coming out more and more, and I got a rare appearence right in front of the tank... even almost got one of him swimming in open water, unfortunately that one did not come out. He's almost doubled in size since I got him, too, which probably makes things easier. I am starting to suspect more and more he is a common species like a bimac, though I'll pose it to the ceph-perts here...

Here is one of him looking ghastly white. I saw him like this today, just hanging off the front glass, and thought he was sick at first:

...but I think the camera flash must have woken him right up, thankfully he did not ink or freak out:

...and here he is... on the move:

...ready to go into one of his PVC pipes:

I think he is ok, but he gave me a scare for a second there. Is it normal for them just to hang off the glass in the front, especially when they are given so many hiding places? In the first month or so, I rarely saw him, he hid almost all day long. Since he's been more tame, he's been out more, but I've never seen him out in the open SO much. Is this ok? He is still eating normally and I think otherwise unchanged....

Thanks...

Pandora, my octopus was O. mercatoris, definitly not what you have, but I did see it turn ghost white like that. She became naturally white after she began to care for her eggs, of course if I walked through the room she would turn to normal colors. Your octo may or may not have eggs, but its worth a check? Look inside that pvc.

HI Pandora,

Okay, my best guess/stab in the dark is vulgaris... could be wrong as Ive yet to have one as a pet and be more familiar with them, but thats kinda what it looks like.... Maybe Chris and Roy may be able to verify that?????

My octos once tame will spend a lot of time just hanging on the glass, normally just watching the outside world

Octo & ceph: Hmm, I've been keeping him at 75 F, because that was how he was kept in the pet store and I was told he was from a supplier in Bali.. he has been doing pretty well (I think) at this temperature, so I didn't change it (aren't O. vulgaris all temperate species?). Not sure if I can count on this LFS for trustworthy info anymore!

Oh, and, any chance on getting a sex and age from those photos... I know it is difficult with octos. When I first got him, his body (not incl legs) was a little over 1.5 inches; now he has doubled that.
