My office 6g nano

No updates in a week. You might think that nothing's been going on, but you would be mistaken.

This week I bought some zoos at an LFS and brought a couple things in from the holding tank at home. Also, some stuff was moved in the office here, and I'm proud to display the first-ever left side pictures!

Here we go.

[Note to Mag Police - all Mag Floats have been removed for everyone's protection.]

Left side view. The rock on this side is pretty flat, but you can see there are many holes. I'm hoping to jam some zoos in those holes, and maybe get some of my mushrooms growing there too. You can see the devil's hand (top and back of tank) starting to come to life. Closeup picture later on.
20060209b.jpg

Right side view. The zoos I bought from the LFS are yellow and a pale blue and I set them at the top back of the tank. You can see them here, but there is a closeup below.
20060209c.jpg

Ah, one of my favorite pieces that I've had a home for a couple of weeks. These are reddish zoos with a bright red ring around their mouths. They cover this rock. I got this piece for only $30, which seemed like such a great deal.

Here's a shot of the new yellow zoos so you can see their location in the tank:

And a closeup:

Got these bright orange/purple zoos from a local reefer on Monday. They are in the front, below and to the left of the xenia:

This tiny frag of peach zoos and yellow zoos broke off the yellow zoos I bought from the LFS. I put them in a little crevice in the rfont. Hopefully they will grow and spread.
20060209i.jpg

I got tired of the pink zoos I bought last week getting knocked down from wherever I put them, so I jammed them in a hole on the left side. Haven't moved since.
20060209j.jpg

Closeup of the devil's hand. You can see the brown polyps starting to extend:
20060209k.jpg

And last, but not least, the ricordia. Still doing well. I've counted at least 3 mouths on him. Hopefully that means he is thinking about splitting. That would be cool.

Thanks for following my thread. I look forward to your comments.

WOW, almost makes me want to get an office job, so I can setup another tank----but stayin at home is so grand!!!!!

Today I added the rock with my few remaining blue zoos. Hopefully they will continue to recover. I also brought one of my peppermint shrimps from the holding tank at home. I can't believe how many hiding places there are for him in this little tank.

I saw him for the first 5 minutes or so after I dropped him in, and haven't seen him again in the last 3 hours.

I placed a group order on UltimateFrags.com last week and our shipment arrives on Wednesday, so I should have some pics of my new additions (ordered 3 zoos and a mushroom) later this week.

As I look around the tank, I see so many places I can add more corals!

OK, it's been a couple of weeks, time for an update full of some new pics. I've been trying really hard to limit my LFS visits to once a week, but the closest LFS actually has zoo frags for $1 a polyp, so I'm often tempted to stop in and see what they have.

The big addition this week was a skunk cleaner shrimp. So far, my experience with shrimp has been limited to pistol and peppermint - two shrimp you rarely see. So it's quite refreshing to have a shrimp like a cleaner than roams all over the tank and is not afraid of his own shadow. I love how he jumps on my hand when I put it in the tank.

Next week I'm planning to head to a new, but highly regarded LFS in search of just the right little goby for my tank. More on that next week.

Onto the pictures.

The ever-majestic xenia and kenya that are intent on taking over the tank:

This is a shot of the finger leather (I think I called it a devil's hand in previous posts) and a new leather that I got this week. I have one of these in my main tank at home and they are very hardy and interesting corals.
20060223d.jpg

Here's a small frag of clauvia (clove) polyps that I got last week. Paid $12 for this frag, which seemed to be a pretty good deal.
20060223e.jpg

Here are some new zoos. This frag was part of my UltimateFrags.com order. Some nice red and green zoos. They are front and center in the nano:

Another zoo from UltimateFrags. Green and powder blue:
20060223g.jpg

This one is MUCH smaller than it appears in the picture. The polyps that are open are peach, but there are supposed to be some flourescent green/yellow ones on here too. I got this frag for $3 at the aforementioned LFS:
20060223h.jpg

Here's a shot from the front of the tank looking down and you can see the rock I added which has some blue zoos (you can't really see them from this angle). My ricordia released itself from its rock and was lost for a few days. I found him and put him up high and we'll see if he's happier there.
20060223i.jpg

My plan is to cover the rock on the left side of the tank with mushrooms. Here's my start. A purple/blue that I bought a few weeks ago from an LFS, and a bright red which came in the UltimateFrags order.

Last, but not least, the cleaner shrimp:

I live not too far from you, who has zoo's for $1 a polyp??

Beyond the Reef in Schaumburg. They have a "bargain tank" that has zoos for $1/polyp (usually onesy-twosies), loose mushrooms for $6 each, and some other little frags on the cheap. Not worth a trip from Wheaton, IMO, but if you're in the area, stop in.

A couple of quick updates:

Last week I upgraded my lights to 54W from nanocustoms.com. I now have a blue actinic, a 50/50, and a 10k daylight. I have the blues, the whites, and the moonlights on timers so I can have a phased schedule. Blues are on for 12 hours from 8am to 8pm, whites are on for 6 hours from 10am to 4pm, and of course the moonlights are on overnight.

Yesterday I had to trim back some of the xenia that was really overcrowding the Kenya and casting a lot of shade on the tank. I'm sure this will be a regular thing I'll need to do as fast as that stuff grows.

This week I really want to get a fish. The place I've been intending to go based on some recommendations has no selection this week. So we'll see what happens. I think I'm getting either a yellow clown goby or a citron goby.

Updated pictures later this week.

looks very nice... i hear you about xenia. i cuse the day i was given a frag. its such a weed.

how are you liking the 54watt upgrade for NC?

I like it. I love being able to have the blues on when I get to work and when I leave. It's a very relaxing color, IMO. It does make things a little more complex, as it turns one plug into 4 - 2 for the main lights, 1 for the moonlights, and 1 for the fans. Then I added the 3 timers It is superbly done by nanocustoms. Quality components and workmanship.

My ricordia is doing very well under the increased lighting. He's up on top, so he's only about 4 inches from the light.

I'm hoping that this lighting will help my zoos spread. I'd love to have my rocks completely covered in zoos.

Here's the latest update. I think I'm getting prety close to capacity, but there's still a couple of pockets of available space I can fill. No new critters added since the last update, but I think I've settled on getting a pair of yellow clown gobies. If the store I'm headed to still has them, I'll be picking them up next week. The original plan was just one fish, but I figure if I'm diligent about my .5 gallon water changes per week, the tank should be able to support them both.

Onto the pictures, and there's a lot of them this week.

Front view. Here you can see the new zoo rock in the lower left and the anthelia in the back on the right that I added this week. The cleaner shrimp is posing on the left.
20060309a.jpg

View from the left, which is the angle I see all day long. In the back I added my log of GSP that I've had at home for a couple of months. There's a closeup in the next shot. Even though it's been in there for over a week, still only about 1/4 of the polyps hve extended.
20060309b.jpg

Closeup of the GSP Doesn't look very green with so few polyps out. It will look great under the actinics once they all come out. You can also see the pink zoos which I mentioned early in the post that "I got tired of picking up so I stuck them in a hole." Well, they fell all the way into that hole you see right above the hermit and I finally retrieved them and attempted to glue them where you see them now.
20060309c.jpg

Closeup of the pinks.
20060309d.jpg

Closeup of the leather I added a couple weeks ago. He's doing well. Also notice the red-legged hermit smiling for the camera.
20060309e.jpg

I thought this was a cool shot. The astrea looks like he's standing up on his hind legs trying to shake the blue-leg.
20060309f.jpg

Peppermint. He's gotten much braver, and I now see him roaming around all day. The cleaner is deinfitely king, though, and he makes the peppermint aware of it.
20060309g.jpg

This is a shot from the left across the tank. The orange ric has been moved to to top of the rocks and has finally attached.
20060309h.jpg

The ric finally seems happy with this spot.
20060309i.jpg

Closeup of the zoo rock from the first pic. It's got light greens, pinks, and I thought there were some purple/reds when I bought it, but not all the polyps have opened yet, as you can see.
20060309j.jpg

This is a nice clump of zoos that I got from the same guy that I got those bright orange ones from a few weeks back. Not fully open, but you can see they are a hot pink with purpleish skirts.
20060309k.jpg

Shot from the right side. I've added the anthelia in the back and the green hairy mushroom.
20060309l.jpg

Anthelia. I know it will be a nuisance eventually, but for now, I think it looks very nice, waving in the current.
20060309m.jpg

Green hairy mushroom. Not very green right now.
20060309n.jpg

And finally, a closer shot of the front where you can see the trimmed-back xenia, the kenya, anthelia, and the cloves, which are quickly crawling up the rock they are on.
20060309o.jpg

As always, thanks for looking!

Roger

Beautiful tank!!!! Do you really work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.? If so, I can see why you would want a tank in your office.

Don't listen to me, I'm just lazy. When I have to go to work 2 days a week I groan and whine.:D I'm semi-retarred and after working 25 years 40 hrs/wk the thought of "really" working makes me feel sorta faint. :eek2:
