My office 6g nano

Beautiful tank!!!! Do you really work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.? If so, I can see why you would want a tank in your office.

No, only the blue actinics work those hours.

Thanks for the compliment on the tank.

Wow. Nice setup, did you get the clown gobies?

You have added a sh*t load of stuff in such a short time! But I guess the LR and LS was from your established tank, no? Did you have any issues with any of the corals other than the blues loosing color? How do they like the new lighting?

I didnt see that you did anything with the pumps, have you added a new one or replaced the stock? How is the tank doing on .5 gallon water changes weekly?

I have the same setup, the 54w lighting, tho a DIY. I am afraid to add a cleaner shrimp, as I have had a bad experience with one from my LFS, as well as three fish. Looking for a new shop with good QC and fish (and prices!), Schamburg is a bit too far for me. I do 10% water changes 2x a week, my tank is stocked with zoas, shrooms, xenia, GSP, and a couple montipora (a cap and a digitata).

No clown gobies yet. I think this week I'll get them. Yeah, I did add a lot quickly. The tank didn't really cycle, I think because most of the LR and LS was established. Some came from my tank at home, and some from an LFS only 10 minutes away. The bulk of the sandbed was dry when I started, but I added a couple of cups of LS from my other tanks at home. Also, I haven't added anything (other than a little food) that contributes to the bioload. 1/2 - 1 gallon (it's hard to measure) have worked out well because it's easy to do (maintenance has to be easy or I tend to not do it), my nitrates are 0, and everything seems to be healthy.

Your tank sounds nice, have you posted any pics?

Great tank!

I have two questions: First, what do you do about your tank on the weekends? I'd love to have one in my office at work, but I'm concerned about it being left alone for two days every weekend?

Second, what's the floating 'mag police'?

I have two questions: First, what do you do about your tank on the weekends? I'd love to have one in my office at work, but I'm concerned about it being left alone for two days every weekend?

Second, what's the floating 'mag police'?

I always make sure to feed the tank late on Friday, the lights are on timers, and there's a small heater in there just in case something happens and the building gets cold. So far so good!

If I was going to be gone longer, I'd need to train a tank sitter.

As for the mag police, they are people that point out that we take the time to create such beautiful tanks, and then we muck up the pictures by including shots of the unsightly "Mag Float" glass cleaners. Their point: take them out before snapping pictures.

I took some new pictures of the nano today. Got a little carried away - 28 pictures. I need to pare that down to the best ones. I will post an update shortly. There's much to show you. I think the tank is looking good.

OK, I was only able to pare the list of pictures down to 22, so bear with me as these pictures load.

The tank seems to be maturing a little bit. It's hard to quantify, but many corals seem to be growing and attaching to the main rocks instead of the frags they are on. I did lose the finger leather coral a couple weeks ago. I came in after a 3 day weekend and it was covered in a black slime, and after about another 2 or 3 days, completed melted away. So I have some room at the top in the back for something similar when I find the right thing. I'm thinking maybe a green sinularia or a sarcophyton maybe. We'll see.

As usual, here are the three full views of the tank.

Left. Added a couple of mushrooms, and the GSP is finally coming to life.

Now let's start the tour with the zoos. These are the deep pink zoos in the lower left front of the tank. I had pictures in my last update, but they were new and hadn't fully opened.
20060328d.jpg

This rock was also in the last update, but now all the polyps are open. The green and pinks are intermixed which is cool. I also put a tiny frag of blue zoos in the front in the hopes they will creep onto the rock.

These are some blue zoos that are on the sand in the front of the tank. They are supposed to be pretty deep blue, but I think they lose a little something under PC lighting. The guy who propagates them has MH. I've got a small rock behind them, again in the hopes they will spread.

Here are the yellow zoos at the back of the tank. Good shot of the anthelia and the clove polyps, too.
20060328g.jpg

Closeup of the cloves. They are really spreading up the rock. What's weird is that the ones on the other end seem to be dying off, as if the whole colony is "moving".

Now onto the mushrooms. These are all on the left side of the tank, which is what I see all day long.
Red and green striped. These are about the size of a quarter at the moment, but often expand to about twice that size. The green striped attached to the rock very quickly, which I was happy about. I tend to chase mushrooms all over the tank until I can get them to attach.

This one is blue, expecially under the blue light. The rescued pink zoos are next to it. It is still attached to that light colored rock. I'm hoping it will attach to the main rock so I can take that small piece out of there. It is blocking a nice tunnel in that rock.

I now have 3 ricordias. The orange is the biggest and oldest. They are all doing very well up on top of the rockwork, basking in the lights.
Orange with a purple edge:

This one is blue. Got this for $17 at an LFS. Many LFS's want $20 - $25 per mushroom.

Green ric that I got a little over a week ago from a local reefer who is breaking down his tank. I may go back for some purple and orange ones he has.
20060328m.jpg

The green ric is at the base of the leather that was doing so well at first. Now it is a little weird. The stalk is lying down, a bit twisted up, but the polyps on the head are fully extended. I'm hoping it's just a phase.

Here's a shot across the top where you can see the xenia stretching out and the orange and blue ricordias.

Closeup of the green star polyps. Still no green, but it is really coming alive. Compare to the picture from a couple weeks ago. Hopefully we'll see some of the bright green tips that it used to have.

This one is for the mag police. I got a new cleaner, called the Nimble Nano. It is handmade to be only 1/4" thick on the inside of the tank. Since it's so small and nifty, I thought it would be okay to leave in the tank during the photo session.

So I've been talking for weeks about finally getting some fish. I went to a very reputable LFS in the area specifically to get a pair of $15 yellow clown gobies. I left there with 2 different gobies. I had read about both of these guys but had never seen them in any LFS. This one is a Red-Headed Goby and he's about 3/4 of an inch. He shouldn't get much bigger. He is very active and you'll see him all day hanging around on the LR.

Unfortunately, his friend, a Catalina Goby, is a little bit shy. He hides most of the time, or if you see him out, blink and he's gone. Couldn't get a picture of him today. Here's a stock photo from someone else's website. Very colorful.

And last, but not least. Now that I have the blue actinics, I thought I would take a couple of pictures. These didn't come out very well at all. The pink you see is the camera. You've all seen a tank under actinics. It's a solid, beautiful blue. I wish I could get a good picture. Anyway, here's the last 4 pictures.

That's it! Thanks for taking to the time to follow my thread.

Coralline!

Coralline!

Today, I noticed the first little spot of pink coralline algae growing on the back wall. It's about the size of the head of a pin. I'm so excited for those GREEN rocks to start growing some pink.

As it turns out, you are probably right. I saw him right before I took pictures of the tank, and then never saw him again. According to liveaquaria.com,

"Although it will tolerate a tropical water temperature, (76 to 78Ã"šÃ‚ºF), the Catalina Goby prefers the cooler temperatures associated with the island where found, Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles, California. Temperatures there range from 60 to 72Ã"šÃ‚ºF. "

My tank generally runs about 82Ã"šÃ‚º. Don't know if the high temp killed him, but it probably didn't help.

I'm really disappointed that I missed that. I had seen this goby in someone else's nano, and probably did some research at the time, and perhaps I ruled it out in my head and then forgot all about that when I actually came across one at the LFS.

What's really disappointing is that I bought this fish from a very reputable LFS, and from one of the better respected employees, and she didn't say a thing about temperature. I should've done my research and known, but she was my last line of defense.

Well, at least I didn't get another one...
