My own AEFW (Acro Eating Flatworms) images

might be a dumb question ? but cant you just dip each new coral in fw? does it kill those little bastards? if so how long should you dip them?

You can dip new arrivals in various solutions. Some do iodine dips for 5 or 10 minutes. Other use Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure (TMPCC) or ReVive.

Since I also treat any new arrival with a 12 hour bath of Interceptor, I have a quarantine tank up and running 24/7. That makes it simple to keep corals out of my system until I know they are safe to add.

Not a dumb question at all, but fresh water dips have been shown to not be affective and are extremely harsh on the corals. Even after you normalize for pH and temperature.

Use the above recommended treatments, they are safe on the corals and effective for irradication of the AEFW IF you follow the appropriate recommendations (Use repeat dips, toss out corals with large egg masses and manually remove egg masses) If you keep a coral that had egg masses, I would keep in QT for at least 4 months, but that is me. I would treat that colony weekly for 4 weeks and biweekly there after.

Mark.
My stonies seemed to tolerate the Fluke tab well.

I decided to dip again today, 2 days later well just because.....

I only found 1 FW this time.

My question is the flat worm still seemed to be alive sticking to the bucket. Does the fluke tabs kill the worms or just make them release from the sps? If there not blown off will they survive back in the tank?

Thanks

If they don't die and stay on the coral, then yes they could reinfest your tank. Some people use a turkey baster to blow them off the corals so their fish will eat them.

I know people are doing it. But dosages and times have varied. I've been using Revive as a dip. They fall off with little agitation(just a twist) in 30 sec, writhe around for ~ 2 min then still. After 3 treatments 1 week apart I haven't seen damage or eggs in almost 3 months(inspected every couple weeks). These corals are in my frag tank(separated from my display) and I just pulled the corals weekly to dip then back into the frag tank.

FYI, baby AEFW come from eggs that are usually laid near the base of the acropora. They're extremely difficult to find, and magnification is a must. The eggs hatch after about 2 weeks, so the treatment must be repeated, as the eggs themselves are resistant to the Fluke Tabs.

The strategy was to blast the corals regularly with a water jet form either a turkey baster or a small powerhead. When the flatworms get blown off they get eaten by the fish. The larger ones are really easy to blow off the coral. They tend to hide towads the base and lower branches. The 2nd mode of attack was to seek out any potential egg masses and get them out of the tank, especially since the smaller ones are harder to blow off the corals.

I will follow what Sanjay is doing...I don´t want to remove all my corals or try some medicine

Nope...

I think Melev said you should set up another tank and treat the corals for 6 weeks there. You can also take out the SPS from main tank every week, treat and put them back, but it is not effective as treat them apart.

A lot of work, I´m a lazy guy

Dilligence is the key to what Sanjay is doing. You have to be aggressive about blowing off the AEFW's from the corals weekly once they are controlled and then the task may take you an hour.

I have been AEFW free for the past year after extensive removal and treatment following Stoney's dosage.

The work load is incredible, but worth it. Good luck. I'd help you out if I lived down in Brazil.
