Congrats! You'll probably need some food after the rotifers: BBS, OTO, and/or golden pearls. Read up on these an choose your own. Typically bbs are used to transition to one of the prepared foods, but more an more people seem to be transitioning to OTO-A (smallest size)without the bbs.

It's often recommended to let a few batches go by to let the parents 'get the hand of it'.

You also need a sieve for rots.

Good luck!

I heard its best to wait for batch 4 or 5 because the parents first couple nest are small and the fry are smaller and weaker then later batches.

This is what I started feeding my fry at around 4 days old. I skipped the brine shrimp and went straight to prepared food.

It's your call if you want to get some practice in there with this batch. Also, if you don't have a sieve you can use a coffee filter to strain the rotifers.

Good luck.

I think I'm going to try there is nothing I can loose but time !!
How long do you been doing this?
What the chances that this batch don't make it?
How many day do I have to keep the fry on rotifer and tdo?
And how do you know if there are going to make it or not after hatching?
Sorry I know there is to many questions but I just want to do my best to learn as much possible before the big day :)

I just started this in November so I'm no expert...I'm still learning. I attempted to raise their third batch and only two survived past metamorphosis.
My mistake was not having a light on 24hrs/day for the first 3 days. Keeping the light on will ensure that they see the rots. In the second batch I got about 75% pass meta, but I ended up killing a few more due to over feeding. They will continue eating TDO until their gut explodes so be careful.
I stopped adding rotifers after day 7. At that point they were eating strictly TDO.

You should be able to tell if they are going to are it past meta by the amount of energy they have and if they start falling to the bottom.

Good luck with them. It is very fun and exciting when the color patterns start to show.

They will blowout to if I have to many rotifer in the little tank with them?

sweet! good luck. :)

How many would you guess are in there? Did you pull the pot out into its own tank, or are the parents still in with them?

What'd you decide on for 2nd food? OTO only? or did you decide to try the BBS (baby brine shrimp) as a second food?

Not much but I'm happy

I got a small batch there were about 40 to 50 eggs at the beginning but I lost some by my pipefish he was just by the eggs all the time and the day before they hatch he start to pick on the next when the perents were looking!!:furious:

I got about 20 fry I hope I can keep one of them:)
I pull the pot out on the night that they hatch.
I haven't been able to get the oto.
I going to start with the bbs as 2nd food till I get the oto

When should I start giving them bbs?
How much?
The OTO is not the same as TDO? I can't find OTO :headwally:

I'm guessing that oto is otohime. Don't know the difference but on the reeds website it says you can use TDO chroma boost in place of it. I'm having good results with chroma boost A.

You are forgetting prime & ammonia badge keep water on check very important if not you will get deformed fish like flared gills & blade infection problems etc..

Baby brine could be fed (along with normal feedings of rots) as early as day 4 or 5. Then you slowly reduce the rotifers at some point (I have limited experience, but started weaning them off rotifers completely to BBS near post-meta day 9 or so and started transitioning to a prepared food at the same time). Then I kept up with the baby brine until I was pretty sure that they were all accepting the prepared food (even the straggelers).

I'm not sure who, but I think someone in this forum posted that each fry needs about 1000 rotifers per day vs 25 bbs per day if that gives you some indication of ammounts to feed.

Yes, as temper posted, an ammonia badge is helpful and something like prime or amquel as an ammonia detoxifier is also useful. You find the badges by searching 'seachem ammonia alert' (don't search for 'badge')

I have clean water all the time

I have a dripping system going on the fry tank from the main tank and a drain that goes to the main fistank sump I just been adding Rotifers more often but I don't have to worry about the ammonia or temperature changes on the fry tank.
I thought about this before I set the little tank for the reason that I don't want to change the elements of the water from the fry tank and the main tank.
It may not be a good idea but I want to try something different:dance:
