My Prized Muelleri Butterflyfish has bumps all over body

http://www.reedmariculture.com/product_cloram_x.php... If your still having issues with ammonia I found this the other day looking into some cultures. It states to be safe with all medications also.

Fwiw I've had the clown thing happen a few times over the 12-13 years I've had my pair. The female kicked out the male out for a few days to a week just to act like nothing happened later. I did not separate them though..

Good luck I don't have any answers for you regarding the other problems or questions as I've never dealt with it but if it was me(just what I would do I have no saltwater relation to your issues so can't say for certain this is best) I would treat with melafix/pimafix to cover all bases of parasite/bacteria infection I know I used to use the two on freshwater fish years ago when I was stumped on what it was. I have read a few posts where guys were successful when stumped in fowler tanks or step up to the copper or chloroquine phosphate if the lesions are still present on the skin. Good luck and hope it works out for you and your fish..

Now that the male is separated he is looking alright, maybe she's the one not feeling well, it's hard to say. We're going to keep them separated til things change.

I'll look into those suggestions, thank you.

This thread has become really depressing..if I were you I'd stop reading.

But, if you continue I have an update. The Muelleri continues to look good, eating blackworms and seafood with Metronidazole and his lympho spot is healing nicely. The clown pair now each have their own side of the tank with a hand crafted mesh separator held by suction cups. The male despite his divorce yesterday is acting normal and eating. The female is a bit off, she spit out a pellet, then sort of went for another and decided not to eat. That is not normal behavior, I believe she'd eat my finger given the chance on a regular day.

For all of those reading and contributing, thank you. Your suggestions/posts help me form the best possible decisions that has saved and provided comfort for my fish friends. While I don't have a full understanding of what has happened and whether I will have any long-term survivors, I continue to search for information and answers.

This morning the Muelleri's mouth is red and he's less interested in food.

Currently, I have some lingering Prazipro in the tank, 1.009 salinity and .25 ammonia which I neutralize with Amquel and do 2 water changes per day since the ammonia showed up.

This looks like infection to me. I have BiFuran in the house, I have no idea what to treat with here.

What I meant is, I know I need an antibacterial, but I don't know what I can combine with hypo and lingering prazi. My choice would be Nitrofuracin Green powder if it's safe to use with everything else.

I went with Bifuran plus powder, turned the tank yellow. Good news is Muelleri will eat blackworms, I think because he doesn't have to use his sore beak as with frozen seafood and the clown pair each ate frozen seafood today. Good fish.

Glad to hear the latest move seems to be making things better, sorry I've been away here lately.

I don't have much experience at all with bacterial issues, I'm reluctant to offer advice.

I will say, your fish are lucky to have you.

Thanks. I'm not sure there is any omniscient like person out there for my situation at this point. But, I continue to plug away on this roller coaster ride and the thread has become more of a log that may help some others in the future rather than searching for advice. With that said, if anyone has useful advice, please chime in!

This morning the Muelleri looked very irritated - shaking head violently, swimming erratically, breathing rapidly, loss of appetite. At first I thought the diluted Prazipro and newly added Bifuran from yesterday (for the mouth infection) were reacting adversely. Hikari, the maker of both said:

"We never recommend using more than one medication at a time."

But, they weren't able to tell me if the Muelleri was reacting to the mix of 2 meds (one full strength, the other diluted) or the return of flukes. They also said:

"The life cycle of some flukes, in severe infestations can be as long as 21 days, so we would suggest three 7 day treatments to complete the process. Since you have done 2 x 5 and had a few days between, one more 7 day treatment may finish the process in your situation. You might consider using Bio-Bandage for the red mouth as it can be used in conjunction with PraziPro as is it a targeted, topical treatment."

So, I did a 10 gal w/c on the 20 gal tank and then dosed Prazi. The Muelleri has calmed down, I can't tell this early if it's a positive reaction to the Prazi or if he tired himself out...

Seems to me the Prazi dose is working, the Muelleri remains calm and looks OK. Now my trusty lfs said they have dosed Prazi with Bifuran many times without negative reaction. Not certain my fish didn't react, but the water changes and Prazi dose helped.

National Fish Pharmaceuticals said I need to wait for the Prazi dose to end before I even think about treating the mouth sore. So, I ordered some Nitrofuracin Green powder and plan on that.

Sounds good, glad things are going well.

Disease of the Day

Disease of the Day

The disease of the day is Fungus. The male clown has developed a fungal infection on his body after being ruthlessly attacked by his mate 4 days ago. He's in 1.009 hypo and being treated for flukes with Prazi.

How urgent is a fungal infection? Do I discontinue Prazi to treat with something else or wait to treat the fungal in 7 days? Or do I let the fungal try to heal? He ate today, as well as all the others (Good fish!), but it's obvious he doesn't feel normal.

Also, when I discontinued Prazi after 2 5 day treatments the clowns showed no sign of being infected, but the Muelleri, in the tank showed immediate signs of flukes. Therefore, if the fungal infection is something that requires attention, it may be okay to discontinue prazi in the clown tank only. An experience out there?

Here's what I think I know:

My severely bloated fairy wrasse and hawkfish were carrying internal parasites, source of parasite is unknown. No fish added in over a year, that leads food, & snails/corals entering the tank and the possibility that one fish carried parasites for over a year before infecting the rest.

When the wrasse died the parasites became external and infected the other fish (except the clown pair).

The Muelleri broke out in ich like dots, like salt all over his body, from beak to tail, both sides. Could this possibly be anything other than ich? If not, the ich was in response to the stress of flukes and I have flukes and ich.

After all fish were divided into quarantine tanks and 4 began breathing heavily (not from ammonia) and I lost 2 before I dosed Prazi saving the others. One died a week later, the hawkfish, he was an original bloated carrier and I know he was full of parasites.

Mrs. Clown may also be a carrier, she looks bloated all the time, but she lays eggs weekly, I'd be bloated too.

I don't feel all fish were carrying internally before they died from external exposure. The blenny & tang had no sign of bloat and very normal fecal matter.

Things I'm trying to resolve:
1. Origin of the parasitic worms
2. Is the Muelleri and female clown carrying internal worms?
3. Did the Muelleri have ich spots , could it have been anything else?
4. Will the parasitic worms die without a host in the display after 12 weeks fallow?

Muelleri is doing great!

Muelleri is doing great!

So far so good with the Muelleri. His mouth sore is healing on its own, it's barely pink and the swelling is gone. The lymphocytis has completely healed as well. He'll eat frozen seafood and blackworms and his behavior is back to normal. There is no heavy breathing and he keeps his beak closed, which he didn't do when his mouth was sore. Still have the Nitrofuracin Green powder on order, never know.

Eventually, I'd like to combine the female clown and the Muelleri into one tank, but I want to make sure the clown isn't an internal parasite carrier and that she doesn't develop any fungal infection from the male clown who died yesterday.

I never thought something that drastic would happen. I quarantine and feed for optimum nutrition and all of a sudden I have 2 fish. I'm hanging onto those fish tightly. They have some obstacles:

1. Completely rid of flukes - either through Prazi or Formalin
2. Come out of hypo successfully
3. Back in the tank - Nov 20th

Here's a nice picture of Ziggy.
Notice the fairy wrasse up top and his bloated stomach, I took this picture months ago and now believe the bloat was due to internal parasites.
