My Purple Giganteas in HD

this is me

Just bought a D5100 for its video functionality and this is the first video from it. Although I do still photography on the side, I've never shoot video. Still playing with it.
Do 1080P if you have the bandwidth. Enjoy!!

The one on the left has been in the tank for 6 months from a LFS.
The one on the right has been in the tank for 2 months from another reefer. The last part of the video shows the two gig tentacles side by side. You can see the one on the left is longer. But the tentacles on one of the right are also getting much longer than when I first got it.

Stills don't look too bad either from this little camera.
I say usable ISO up to 3200.

hmmmm......I gotta find out what youtube did to the video. Probably compress the heck out of it. The colors are richer and more vivid in the original coming out of the camera.

very nice anemone set up.. I like that clown with the orange tail.

Ya, YouTube does that. Videos ive posted are not the same clarity as what they are on my computer.

Previous video has been deleted. The quality was just bad and don't represent the true colors of the anemones.

Here's the new version.

Thisisme, are these guys in the Elos 70 in your sig? Do you have a tank build thread or full tank shots anywhere? Looks great

Thanks!
I have a thread on it on the Elos years ago. The pics in the thread are not hosted anymore so I don't think it's any of use.
I started the Elos around 3 years with the focus of RBTA. Then the tank crashed and I started back up again. Shortly after that, my magnifica took a walk into the overflow and clogged it while I was on vacation. I wasn't thinking about starting back up again but I did. So around last September, I was in pursuit of giganteas. Lost a couple from the poorly shipped gigantea from the lfs until this past January I was lucky to get one that survived. That's the one on the left.
Here's a FTS.

How do you like that camera? or should i ask..What ... if anything...dont you like about it?

My everyday camera is a Nikon D3. Full-sized and a rugged camera body. My intended use for the D5100 was mainly its HD recording capability. But the stills coming out of it are hard to ignore.

Handling: When I was holding the D5100, I was having trouble getting my hand to grip the camera. The camera is too small. I feel like I have to squeeze all my fingers together to grip it or my pinky finger would hang loose.
Some of the buttons are missing. For example, no front aperture dial. No quick WB adjustment, No ISO adjustment. There's a FN button you can assign to but it still lack some of the useful button.
One thing I like about the handling is the pivoting screen. And it's the same Hi-Res screen found many hi-end camera. The screen pivoting feature is a definite plus for certain situation. Ie. shooting macro on flowers low on the ground.

Image quality: The D5100 utilizes the same sensor as the D7000(which is ~$500 more). I haven't done any extensive outdoor shooting since it's raining here all weekend long. But from shooting the tank alone, I think it's a very good little camera. Its 16MP sensor is very good at both low ISO and high ISO. Some of the pictures above are shot at ISO3200. The files are very detailed and color is superb.

HD Video: I'm a sucker for narrow DOF. These VDSLR offers more narrow DOF than regular camcorder. And with a lot of Nikon lenses invested already, I can change to any lens with far better quality than a similar priced camcorder. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that the lens do make noise when it's focusing and all this is recorded in the video.

Features: This is the area I feel the D5100 is lacking. But for the price, I can't complain. If I want more bells and whistles, I would be looking at the D7000. But the D7000 does not have the pivoting screen I want.

Keep in mind that a (D)SLR camera is only as good as its lens that's attached to it. The lens should come first when you shop for DSLR. You can have a very good camera but if the lens is junk, you're not going to like the result.

Your GIGANTEA'S are amazing...i can't find one and you have two of them. Con grats on them. Do they like the sand better or the rocks in your opinion ?

Gigantea definitely rock. It likes to attach its foot to a smooth surface rock and have something to protect it. Like a depression in the rock and a rock near it.
Haddoni definitely sand. It likes to bury its foot and attach to the bottom of the glass.

Stop saying you cant find a gig. I personally don't think you're looking hard enough. :D
Call up Bob at ibluewater.com and he'll set you up with one if you're game with his price and service.

I have talked to Bob and he definitely will try and get what you want (he's a little pricey however), that being said there really isn't anyother place except DD that has gig's anymore for sale. Reefhotspot used to sell them last year. Ibluewater seems to be the best place online to get one.

Did you buy one of your gig's from him?
