My reef bones

I don't normally comment negatively, but come on, most of your comments WVfishguy are down right rude.

FISHGUY- Don't you dare tone down or change the way you address a problem, people need answers, sometimes those answers are not what they want to hear but they still need them IMO.

He's not rude at all he's just overly experienced and confident because of what he has come to learn in the past decades. When I first met him I thought he was a know it all banana head, but over time I grew to like bananas I guess :) Once you get to know him, he grows on you in a strange way. Eitherway I value REAL expertise and there are only a number of legitimate long term hobbyists on here that I consider among our local "experts" and he is one of them. We may never agree on everything 100% but I sure do listen to what he says and I strongly advise each and everyone here to do the same when he is addressing a situation.

BTW:

"He's a grumpy old man..." LOL Matt that's just Priceless :D

I'm an expert at freshwater, but I consider myself an "advanced beginner" when it comes to saltwater, especially inverts. I'm not sure there ARE any true experts on saltwater. Some folks are just more knowledgeable than others.
Travis, you describe yourself as a novice, so I'll ask you; Has anyone explained the importance of starting out with a good skimmer? I didn't see you mention it specifically (I might have missed it). I see a lot of folks skimp on this piece of equipment and get disgusted with the hobby way too soon.

(just kidding of course, you can kick my arse at the next meeting!)

I have a good skimmer now, I got it months ago used, its a Euro Reef ES5 (I think is the model). I would have preferred a larger one, but I got a great deal on it, & from what I understand, ER actually rates their skimmers correctly, & this one is rated for a 90. So hopefully along with my refugium, I will be good to go.

I have been collecting parts for this tank for well over a year. I began the journey in getting a 90 for a large planted FW tank. To make anextremely long story short, I realized that to do my planted tank right, that is the way I wanted to... it was going to take alot more money than I thought, so I sold off what I had amassed for it so far, except the tank & stand, & started to accumulate parts for a salty tank. I sold off the two Jebo canisters I had originally picked up for that tank, & turned that money into the skimmer I have now.

I have spent ALOT of time laboring over decisions on parts... as well as tons of time beating the bushes looking for deals on used equipment, that I could have made a parttime job out of it. But I am very close now... veeeeery close.

Very close to starting what I expect will be a spirit shattering algae farm. :)

Trav

edit: I just spoke to the wife, & my RO/DI is apparently waiting for me at the house. Her words were "a big box is here from Florida", & "its not rocks" so I am hopeful!!! WEWP!!!!

For the very first time in my life, I am afraid to make any comment whatsoever. Someone alert the media.

Hey now fishguy, if ur talkin' about my kid, she took the good looks from her momma, sometimes I look at her and can't believe she is part of me! BTW/ THANKS AMY!!! it finally worked! And to Ron......Terry does kind of grow on you......in time. J/K Terry u da man!;)

Young James, saying she gets her looks from her Mother is like saying the Earth is round. Its obvious. This little angel is a gift from Heaven. I'll bet she's perfect. Gotta go now - this old man's getting way too emotional.
BTW - I'd make great godfather. Seriously.

You all have a beautiful girl. My "babies" are 4 & 5.75. Its killing me that they aren't really babies anymore. The oldest is pretty much 14 though, & she is killing me for many other reasons. They need to ship these things with better guarantees!!!

Travis, the best is yet to come. You have high school, boy/girlfriends, driver's licenses, and college in the future. Enjoy their youth while can, and never, ever miss a special moment - its a gift you only get once in a lifetime.

Anybody remember what this thread was about? And does anybody care?

Got my rock today, I gotta say, reeferrocks.com is a pleasure to do business with!!! I only took one piece out to look at it, & it didnt appear to be especially dirty. If I find the time tomorrow, I am going to unpack it all & give it a cursory rinsing, see how much stuff comes off. I will try to take some up close pics if any care to see it.

Hey, just another update on this. I opened up the box & pulled out a few of the larger rocks in it to check them out. They appear to be pretty clean of any crusty chunks. Thats not to say they dont need cleaned. They are shedding lots of detritus, but it seems to be mostly sand, or parts of the rock itself.. nothing soft really. I hope to drop em in some holding tanks tomorrow, I need to setup a cleaning station in my basement first.
