My Seven Footer

Are all those hinges/screws quality stainless steel? I use a panasonic fan to vent my sealed hood, and it is VERY quite. I highly recommend their whisper line.

Nice setup, BTW.

Thanks!

I did buy a panasonic fan. Glad you endorse them, I have not fired it up yet. I sure hope all the hardware is stainless. It appears to be plastic and stainless and largely sealed up. Looks like it is boat stuff.

That cabinet work looks outstanding!

I agree, its going to look really good once its up and running!

Well, I had a few days off. :hammer: :hammer: So, I built a sump and a little table for it to sit on. I followed my plan pretty closely but cut the length down from six feet to four. The sump will hold a refugium, an additional compartment that can be lit for coral frags, a mixing chamber to catch the overflow from the tank and pump stuff into the closed loop type water enhancers (chiller, UV, phosban, yada yada), a bubble trap. I am still on the steep part of the learning curve for sumps, but, at the tail end of this one, I think I have it down.

Here is a pic with the top flange going on. The sump is upside down by the way. My last three seems were great. My first six or eight... not so good. I reinforced all the mediocre seems with triangular acrylic strips and caulked all joints with silicone. :worried: :worried:

I will water test on tues or wed. By the way... home depot had a sale on shop vacs. I put one in my basement just in case.

Oh, and... just in case he reads this thread, thanks to my Dad who has worked tirelessly with me to build this sump. As a former general contractor and airline pilot, I can always be sure he will know a little sumpthing (get it) about everything. Could not have gotten anything done this week without him.

Well, we did some plumbing today. This went very quickly with the help of my Dad and a miter saw!

Has anyone used slip unions to drain the sump? I am looking for some detachable pipe here, but, this was all they had a Menards.

The plumbing is all dry fit, so, if you see any problems let me know!

ball valve is to close off flow and the gate valve is to control flow which they do much better then a ball valve. More money but worth it.

What is the purpose of both a ball valve combined with a gate valve?

I used a fitting like this on my tank, allows easy connect/disconnect and is very secure: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/va...ry_name=114&product_id=27073&variant_id=30754

If the link does work, search for 2" NPT Female Threaded Coupler . The ones I used are 2" slip, not threaded.

Thanks for the link!

Regarding the two valves, treny has got it.

Since I am gravity feeding my skimmer, and trying to keep a certain flow to my fuge, getting it just right will require that all gates are set just so. If I have to shut off the flow, to work on one part of the system (when I turn off flow to the "dump can" or work on the skimmer), I don't want to have to do it with the gate valve and "lose" my perfectly tweaked setting. Also, if a gate gets clogged with a snail jam or whatever, I can still shut off the flow to that pipe to fix it without shutting off the system pump.

Thanks Spazz!

For circulation, I plan to push 2000 gph through the sump with eductors, should be about 4-8000 gph in the tank - just from the returns. In addition, I have four Vortechs which will be strategically hidden along the back and right walls of the tank.

Well, trash the plan for the Vorechs. The acrylic is 1.25 inches thick. The vortech magnets can only handle 3/4 inch. I have ordered Four Tunzes instead... which means wires to hide in the display tank. RATS! :mad2:

Anybody want to take four new Vortechs off my hands? (Kidding... I am shipping them back to aquarium specialty as soon as I can find time to go to Fed Ex).

Leak tested the sump. No leaks!

Also, I started unpacking some equipment to help with the rough plumbing.

Will drill out hole for the system pump and start that direction of the plumbing.

Maybe a few more pics by tues.

Hey FT,

Looking great!!

I just finished building a 7 footer as well. I also enclosed the canopy and put a 120 cfm vent to through the roof outside. I run it 24/7, but then again, I'm in SoCal. I also have a 100 gallon sump in the same enclosure. Thought you'd be glad to hear that I have zero humidity problems, and not even any skimmer smell. It is finally getting cool at night here and there is no condensation on any windows either. So I think your venting plan will work out well. Here is a pic of the enclosure:

Wow CW, that is an awesome built in cabinet!

Glad to hear that your vent plan is working nicely. Do you run a chiller? What happens in your tank when it rains outside.... does your lighting equipment get condensation on it?
