My Shadowbox Background Project

HOLD UP. Wait just one dog-gone minute. People I hate to break this to you but Karin is NOT being honest with you. It is clear to me after seeing all of the pictures of her tank that the REAL reason why this works so well is that she has somehow figured out how to train her snails not to crawl across the back glass. Think about it. Have you seen a picture of her tank with a snail crawling across the back? Of course not. That would ruin the desired affect. She has somehow trained her snails and she is not sharing this info. Before you go and spend all that time and effort you should think about how YOUR tank is going to look without trained snails. Its going to look STUPID. Its going to look like you have snails suspended in the water column. What are you going to tell your friends? Are you going to say something like 'my snails can actually swim'?

OK OK I'm jealous. Your background project came out great. Congratulations.

just getting the reef tank set up finished she has me setting up a fish only tank..she has me set up to make another foam rock wall set up and now..i get to make one of these as well ..really cool stuff...if i can learn anything from you guys it will come out and look awesome..thanks for sharing.

R u serious?!
Absolutly amazing idea!

Really really beautifull!!!
I'll try to do some like this in my new setup!

So... some questions:

1 - How do u guys clean de back glass of the tank? Is this shadowbox samehow removable?

2 - Can sameone please take a side shoot of a tank with this kind of Background? Is that my tank will be in wall but with 2 side views and i have some doughts about the side view...

Thanks in advance and keep posting those beautifull photos!

Other 2 questions:

3 - Do you guys brush the acrylic sheet in witch side? The one close to the tank (outside of the shadowbox) or the one close to the fake rocks (inside of the shadowbox)?

4 - Do you think this item can do the job in an white transparent acrilic sheet?
Thanks again!

Very nice effect. You definetly set the bar on this one. At least for me ! How do you keep things off the glass? Like stated in a very amusing manner by nasty Wendy, it will ruin the look.

Here is mine so far

Sorry here is the light stripshttp://www.waclighting.com/USA/products/?categoryid=401&productid=2045

Glad to see this thread still around, it's an awesome idea. I wish I could have seen it in person while the tank was still up.

euromomtx, thanks for sharing this idea and for being so thorough with all the build info. I think your tank looks spectacular. My wife and I go snorkeling in the Keys 4-6 long weekends a year and your tank has that 'you are really there' look to it. Huge kudos for a job well done and inspiring so many to do the same!

My main DT has a rock wall that runs right up to the waterline just because I didn't like the look of other tanks where you could see through or see a fake background (photo or just blue or black paint). You have solved that problem as far as I'm concerned. I'm currently setting up a 55g full time QT which will also house local critters and some basic corals I'll pull from my 180g DT (to make room for cooler looking new corals). Now I will work on a light box as a backdrop for the QT. And who knows, if it works out well, I may have to rescape my DT.

I've been upgrading my tanks and am doing a shadowbox in each of 2 tanks that will be connected by a 3" square tube that allows the fish to go from one tank to the other. I am doing a foam rock background with an opening in the back for the shadowbox to have an underwater cave look. The first of the 2 tanks is almost done. Here's some pics of my shadowbox first edition.

Here's the view from the back. I have velcro strips to hold the box in place. I used frosted film from snaptint

This is the box (first edition). The faux coralhead is cardboard and I don't really care for it. I'll be swapping it out for something different. Lighting is from 8 small LED's - not very bright.

I think it looks great, but you realize a cave would be dark :). I don't think the card board looks bad at all. With the frosting it is pretty hard to see, of course it maybe different in person.

Neat idea!

Devils Throat. A dive site in Cozumel, Mx. Kinda the look I was going for.
