My Shallow Cube Build Thread

I dunno, maybe 3 250w HQI's is too much for a 40g cube

I'll start dosing SPF 50 till my new tank comes in

What a pain that fixture was. It was so heavy I had to go up into my attic into a very small crawl area since I have vaulted ceilings and nail in 2x4 studs in between the truss's to screw the fixture into.

Digging through 24" of insulation has my itching all over.

Even in Sept, FL attics are just shy of 2 million degrees

Also got one other new toy.

Best media reactors in the business IMHO.

The TLF reactor nipple/barbs have the ability to "pop" out of their sockets which could easily drain my tank and cause serious problems.

This thing is bullet proof, has john guest fittings that make everything easy (even john guest fittings that fit maxi jet nozzels for the pump intake) and uses empty DI canisters to put the actual media in. Built in flow valve and your good to go.

Much easier to change media too, no worrying about getting GFO and carbon down the little tube in the middle. You open up the DI cartredge, dump out old and pour in new, screw back on and go.

Love it

does that media reactor catch all of the dust from your phoshate remover and carbon?? i really love the simplicity of it though ... with brackets, you could mount it pretty much anywhere!

i just checked out the first and last page of your build, and sorry, nothing in between, so i apologize if i missed something. that tank is so nice, and looks so good. your build looks very professional and clean. the tank is just a nice piece, but those lights, ugh. it just takes so much away. you need to go with a 250w pendant. a very clean single hanging pendant would look nice on there, but that long fixture makes it look bad, and i think (at least) 1 of the lights is serving no purpose. with a shallow tank you could probably do 2x150 and get better output than a single 250, but i think the pendant would look better. great thread btw, sorry for coming in and knocking your tank, i am trying to be constructive.

LOL, you've missed alot by skipping those pages.

I've had a single pendant over it since day one. I put the 48" HQI set up there in anticipation of my new tank. Tomorrow I'm picking up my 120g custom rimless starfire tank.

Here is what the tank looked like with the pendant.

No, the best thing to do is similar to what you do with the phosban reactor.

Fill them up, run water through it at full blast while feeding the exit line into a bucket. After 2 or 3 gallons it will run clear.

A very sweet set up tho. Super super simple and effective.

New tank is in.

48x24x24 120g three sided starfire with two 1 3/4" holes in the back wall for returns.

This is my first starfire tank and rimless and so far I am very pleased with it. The seams look great and all my requests were done correctly.

I don't get my stand until tomorrow, but I'm hoping to have this set up very soon. I have Monay and Tuesday off to help finish this build.

Dude you have no idea the amount of jealousy I have for you right nowThat is exactly what I want!!!!! Whre did you order this new tank? Are you going to keep the smaller one running too. Sorry if this has already been answered.

I hope you're keeping that powder blue.....ones that healthy ain't exactly a dime a dozen, if you know what I mean. Neither are ones that are that friendly. Good luck with your new tank! Old one looks beautiful!

Yes I am keeping him, he's my all time favorite fish and I got VERY lucky. He is very healthy, extremely friendly and seems to be a good tank mate even to new additions (knocks on wood).

I've tried keeping PBT's in the past without luck so I know what I've got.

Crossing my fingers that I get my stand today!
