My Shallow Cube Build Thread

Charles,
That tank you have will look sick under that ati fixture with those bulbs, cannot wait to see the immediate results. I just switched my fixture out for an Aquatinics t5/ SE 250 watt Radium....The colors I am getting are unreal, I really think lighting has much to do with color, still running neo-zeo here.

Hey Perry!
Thanks, I hope so. I'm a little nervous about going all T5.

I did switch one bulb at the last minute. I've been reading about some tanks being "dark" so I changed out one of the aquablues for a GE 6500.

Now I'll have four blue+, two aquablues, one kz fiji purple and one GE6500

If you are going to suspend the unit over the tank, go extra high at first, with a short photo period... t5's are very powerful....
I am sure you are aware, just a reminder...

I'm hearing that.

Even though I've been running high PAR MH's I've read that bleaching can be an issue.

It will be an adjustment, keep some good movement on top of the water, and you may get some type of shimmering effect... The corals will probably pastel up a bit, but given the prodibio products being used, they should darken in a shore period of time... You will love the idea of swapping bulbs to get the exact mix of bulbs to suit your eye. The coral growth will amaze you, be ready for the corals to really take off... here is a pic of my old 75 under 6 bulb tek unit...

Anyone still read this thread? lol

I like keeping it as my own journal, so I'd do it anyway :)

Got a couple new things in this week. I got rid of one of my Tunze 6101's and got a Vortech MP40W. So far I'm happy but its only been a couple days.

I also got my T5 fixture in. I am very impressed by the build quality of the fixture and the reflectors are the amazing part. They're like bent mirrors. I guess since they are silver coated (which is how you make mirrors) they techincally are mirrors, maybe?

Few pics.

I started a thread over in the SPS forum and I think I'm going to try a split photo period. Four hours on starting at 8am, then four ours off and finally four hours back on.

I was talking with a long time reefer and there is some discussion about this method actually giving two seperate photo periods in one day, with the break in between it allows time for the zoozanthelle to rest and recover (not fully) and go "at it" for another four hours. Then a 12 hour break overnight.

An interesting concept and once my tank is accilmated I want to give it a try.

With T5's I am pretty sure I don't need the cooling fans anymore and with moving one Tunze 6100 behind a rock on the left side and the Vortech on the upper right this really cleans up my tank.

Just wanted to take a second to thank Jeremy at Premium Aquatics.

Incredible customer service. Thanks again!

Three weeks in and my tank is looking a little better. Too early to start making conclusions about Prodibio or ATI but I hope to be heading in the right direction.

wow your tank looks great! The ATI fixture looks super bright!

It is very bright and I am very happy with the look of my tank. Being able to dial the color in so specifically is very nice.

I've also noticed there are far fewer shadows and in my estimation I've increased available real estate for growing corals by 30% from HQI.

Looking really nice Charles...
That efflo moved back to the MT, I had to snap about 1/3 of it off from necrosis, as soon as it looks better, I will be in touch.

Sounds good Perry! Sorry I couldn't make it, crazy crazy week. Between my brother, my son & I we each had surgery three days in a row. Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday that week respectively.

Lets hope that's all over with. :)

Holy Crap!!!
I got your PM, and sorry to hear about your son... Hope all is well... I will get this efflo colored up nicely, and snip a piece and you can have the mother colony... Fortunately, I would have been too embarassed to give you the colony in its current status, browned out, tissue recession, and little PE. It is on the road to recoverey, we will hook up soon.

BTW, I must mention again, sweet progress on the tank, reminds me of Sonny's tank on the sps forum, well done....

LFS Score!

3" maxima clam. $40 bucks.

Also got some "rescue" colonies.

I saw these a month ago before they started STN'ing. Bad lighting was definately an issue. One on the left I'm pretty sure is an efflo. $30 each
