Thanks everyone!! Yeah I really like the first picture too. They are actually red and green but under my lights and using my camera they come out looking purple and green. They also grow pretty fast too.

Sqwat- do you have a picture of that blasto?

Picked up some new Blastos since my last post.

Never really paid much attention to blastos before but you've got some amazing blastos that have caught my eye. Going to be looking for those at the next frag swap.

Nice Collection, I am a big fan of Blastos, they are hard to find...Not as popular as other corals, heres a shot of my favorite I got

Thanks BDS, yeah they are harder to come across. especially the nicer color combinations.

That is a nice colony in your picture. Is that a purple center and outside or just a darker shade of green?

That's a great collection ParanoidObseshn. I love Blastos myself, but only have one at the moment, a red and green one - here's a shot.

One of my favorite LFS gets in Blastos from time, but they often look rather unhappy and I've got a bad experience of buying one from there and it just fading away to nothing over a period of time, despite low flow, less intense light and some feeding. Do you make a point of only buying healthy looking Blastos, or do you have any tips on getting one like this happy again?

Here's the photo of the one at the LFS. It's rare to get non-red ones here, so I'm a little interested, despite the way it looks at the moment. If anything, it looks less happy today than it does in this photo...

Hey Ape,

I have bought a couple that weren't 100% healthy and have had mixed experiences with that. Some just continue to get worse and slowly disappear while others slowly got better. I have a spot in my tank where I put some of the ones that need to heal up first. It wide open and has low flow and I can easily put something overtop the tank to shield the light from it.

I like the blasto that you have. It has nice coloration to it. As far as the picture of the blasto at your LFS that is a really nice piece. There could be a bunch of reasons why it might not look so happy there. The tissue around the base of each polyp looks pretty healthy and it doesnt appear to have any breaks in it, as well as the mouths aren't gaping either.

But blastos can be finicky at times so it could really go either way.

Awesome. I too have overlooked blasto's. Can you tell me a bit about them? Basic requirements? How do they spread? Like acans?

Thanks for the advice! I'll be back in there next week picking up some new T5s, so I'll have another look and see how it's doing. It's a lot of money to drop (about $125) if it ends up dying on me! If it looks like it's getting worse, I may have to pass...

This, by the way, is the first Blasto I bought from the same shop. It never made it. :( As you can see, the main difference is that it was already losing tissue when I got it (apologies for the quality of the pic).

~Rush~ They are basically similar requirements as acans. Low light low flow. They also grow similar to acans by encrusting or by branching.

Ape- Yeah $125 is alot to drop on something that is real questionable like that. If it is still there next time you go you will definitely get a better idea of if it will make it.

That first piece that you picked up from that same LFS is really sweet. A real nice color morph that you dont see too often. I wish I had it lol. That is a shame that it didnt make it though.

With dieoff like that, it was probably a dying sponge or something similiar that took that one out. It's a common problem with corals sitting on a massive rock. The only thing that helps is sawing off the rotting rock, then fragging the coral with a generous safety margin to stop any secondary bacterial infection.
A really nice piece, though. Too bad we don't get CITES for those Indo blastos in Europe.
