My Squamosa

Here are some pics of my new squamosa clam. He is about 10-11" long and about 6 inches high. Let me know what you think. He also has mushrooms on his shell, is that ok?

i wonder how many others are humming "my squamosa" to "my sharona" by The Knack

absolutely beautiful :)

i'm not sure if mushrooms can sting clams but it look like you have some time before the get close enough to the mantle. if it becomes a problem mushrooms are easy enough to remove.

Thanks for the comments. I aquired it from a person who has had it for about 5 years. It might be too big for my tank, I was thinking of selling it. Anyone venture to guess what it's is worth? As for the toadstool, I got that from liveaquaria. It has gotten significantly larger since I bought him.

yup. i've seen similar squammies for 89 retail in LFSs. but i've also seen them as high as 200 in the more expensive stores....

big squammies are no big deal with as fast as they grow (especially ones with blah patterns/colors like this one). in more cases than not, it's a 'buyer's market' with more people trying to get rid of them after they outgrow their tanks than people actually looking for them.

Wow dude,
You don't have to get all personal about it, all I was saying is you are full of it saying a LFS would sell a clam this size for $89. If you want to post in the future, make it constructive and nice, not vengeful, saying how my clam is blah..

I obviously cant speak for manderx but I am guessing he didnt mean blah as what you may thinking of it as but more of as a common color combination you see in squammies. I also would agree that although not the usual price I as well have seen big squammies like that for $89 in stores.

i never meant it to be personal, just realistic. if you took that as personal then maybe you need to search inside yourself a bit to see why you took it that personal. dunno if you got suckered into paying too much for it when you bought it or you just saw $$ in your eyes when you thought about selling it, but it's not worth 400. period.

as for being blah, it is the most common color/pattern of all squammies. brown on brown. doesn't even have the blue spots that many of that type have. though that could be just be water/light quality since mine would lose it's blue spots when i neglected my tank.

I am glad you got all Dr. Phil on me. My only point is to say I didn't post all the pics and info for people to criticize, just for peoples enjoyment. Even your last post is getting perosnal and saying unnecessary things. I view Reef Central to be a place to share advice and experience, not to create arguments where there don't need to be any. My reply to your first post was only stating that I have never seen a price that low for any clams at my LFS. Even Liveaquaria sells their 10" gigas for $400. I appologize if this upsets you, but if it does, stop following the post.

To JocoxVT, Thanks for the reply, I am surprised to think they are sold that cheap. Most every LFS here in the tri-state area sells clams for $40 for a 2-3". But I am sure it is different everywhere you live.

Even Liveaquaria sells their 10" gigas for $400.
i see a 7.5" for $160. and a 7.5" gigas turns into a 10" gigas in the blink of an eye. and the only reason they expect 160 for this one is because big clams don't ship well and they gotta cover themselves on their 14 day guarantee. just because a small clam sells for 40-90+ doesn't mean that a clam 4x bigger is worth 4x+ as much. like i explained in an earlier post, big clams are a buyer's market. price is based on demand and there simply isn't as much demand for big brown clams.

when you post something into a discussion board, you gotta be prepared to take the bad with the good. if all you want is for people to always tell you what you want to hear, i'm sure there is a hello-kitty board out there somewhere that would love to have you.

Once again having to get personal about it. Obviously our views on the discussion board differ. as I stated before, the LFS around here would have a clam like that selling for even more than $400. And just so you know I sold it for $350, thanks for the comments.

ha ha mines bigger

ha ha mines bigger

if your went for 350? what would mine fetch. over 12 inches:D

Nice clam, I would only beging to imagine what people would pay for it. That is a gorgeous clam, thanks for the pics. I like the green outline of the mantle.

All other matters aside, I agree with manderx on the pricing of larger clams. They are so hard to place with the right buyer since not many folks have huge tanks with tons of space in them (and a good calcium/alk supply). I know I find even my smaller clams sucking all the calcium out of the water pretty quickly. Its very hard to see even the largest of them selling for anything more than 100-150 unless the coloration is spectacular. Personally, I would rather have four or five smaller, ultra colored animals that can grow into my tank for 400.00 than one very large, very common clam.
