My T5 55g tank....and coral lightening

You should feed the frogspawns more...i noticed great color over time as I fed it a couple times a week with some good stuff like cyclopeeze, but this is neither here nor there for this thread.

Mothra,

Thats good stuff...I just moved this weekend and the tank is sitting barebottom with all the rock in the sump and the fish swimming about the tank wondering what happened....I am about to hang my T5s tonight...I might do something similar...but since you are changing the temps...I may do a comparison of different brands...time permitted. At the very least I will have some pics up in due time with the corals etc etc..etc...

So that pink of the mill is just perceived? When you pull it out and hold it under a household light that pink fades? Not as rich?
Im surprised about the 3K...i thought it would be alot redder but it seems to just be a rich...i mean very rich yellowish. Keep the blog going....i think ill get a tag on there and post some replies....I dont know why people come on threads like they care and just disappear.

Out of the tank it is pink, just not as rich, with blue tips. Once I put the reflector on the 3k it became so overpowering that it washed out the blue, I like the look of it w/o the reflector a lot! I'm thinking about making up a black 'relfector' (mainly to keep the light from making my room look like the lights are always on). I know it will reduce the output of the lamp, but hey I didn't see any browning issues in 2 weeks w/o reflector.

Hey guys...Thought I would drop another note....It has been aprox a month since the switch to halide. My green simer has shown a MAJOR color shift from yellowish to green. It is FINALLY starting to look like a GREEN slimer instead of a yellow slimer. I havent noticed any major change on anything else as of yet, but I think I will over time. We cant expect all the corals the react the same :). I do know one thing, I dont regret the switch at all. The Phoenix bulb on electronic ballasts with actinic supplementation looks pretty damn good!

Good job Horace, sounds like you are doing something right :) Just for grins you oughtta get an XM 10k and throw a couple of your T5 B+ up for supplement - I think you'll be surprised how good it looks and I bet you'll get better growth and color. But keep doing what you're doing for awhile and let us know how things turn out.

I just moved from a 30 gallon with a 4x39w tek light to a 75 gallon with 6x54w on a regular ballast. In my 30 gallon my green slimer was looking yellow like yours Horace. However in my 75 gallon all my corals are getting a richer color instead of the light colors they had in the 30 gallon. The only difference in the lighting is I have a UV super actinic bulb in the mix instead of just using aquablues and actinic blue + bulbs. I'm going to replace one of the actinic blue+'s with another UV super actinic and see if that'll bring out more color in the corals.

Ive considered it :). Perhaps on my bulb change i will give it a shot. Thats about 9-10 months out though. I am pretty worried that I wont like the look though :(

One week with 13000K made no difference and two weeks with 14500k had no changes but with 20000K my stylophora's polyps are turning purple and german blue polyps are turning blue. But there are no other changes.

My german blue polyp has always been very nice. Its one of my fav corals in the tank.

My new Acropora Hoeksemai is turning green from purple with 20000K MH bulb so I decided to go back to Giesemann Megachrome 14500K DE bulb. It looks a lot brighter and I think I like it better than 20000K. I'm not going to change the bulbs anymore and make sure I wait long enough to see some results.

Anybody want to buy Giesemann Megachrome 13000K DE and 20000K DE bulb? I only used them for couple of weeks. I know I'm not suppose to sell here so I'll post it on the selling forum later.

Im back and tank is all set up...just waiting for my ph monitor and refractometer to get here and we are in business. I am gonna try to post some pics on here(they might be too big). I have the lights hung at 5 inches....act on a 10 hour period and daylights on a 6 hour period. (2 ATI blue plus, 1 ATI 12K, and 1 GE 6.5K(about to order a different brand but no coral yet so pointless)

I will be getting my first lot of frags for this tank in the next 2 or 3 weeks and hope to join in the color discussion and see what i can physically observe.

Mothra those 3 Ks do make the red pop on that peice..wow!
Any pics of the more bluish/purplish corals..i am not a member of that other site so i hope you dont disappear off of RC

Mothra

I;ll get you a 3K vs. the 6500K PAR reading this afternoon. The 3K beats the ATI Aquablue so I assume it beats the 6500K as well.

Grim, how does that 3k look to the naked eye? And have you seen any different colors pop with that bulb? thanks

I'm running (2) 3k and (4) B+ right now. The 3k I have the reflectors off of, everything was fine until I put the reflector on the first of the 3k bulbs and then I got some serious bleaching, so I pulled it.

I need to update my blog with some new pics...

Yikes, they must emit some serious par. Mothra, your blog is very interesting. Thanks for making it :)

The 3K's appear to have more PAR than the GE 6500K. I got a UVL and D&D sun to compare it to but so far I like the look adding the 3K kinda. I passed one off to a friend who is estatic with the look he is getting.
