My tang has itch

I've been using kordon itch attack 3ML 4 times a day on my six gallon biotube tank, the guys at Petco told me to switch out my carbon filter for a cut in with no carbon in it because he says the carbon will clean out the medication yesterday he was looking way better but this morning he got a lot of white spots again any advice

First of all, that tank is incredibly way too small for any tang. The smallest tang will get to be at least 7-8 inches.

There is no cure in a bottle for Ich. There are no shrimp that clean Ich off fish. Ich goes through a cycle where they will fall off the fish, live, go through a cycle in your tank and attack the fish harder and harder everytime till the fish dies.

I would suggest reading the stickies on the forum and especially go to the Fish Disease forum on RC.

Pretty well sums it up

+1.

as others suggested, I would get the tang out. See if the local fish store will take it. If you have another tank for it, you can try hyposalinity, copper treatment, or just soak the tang's food with garlic juice (this will not rid the fish of the parasite though).

^^^^^^Agree 99%^^^^^
Copper and chloroquinine both come in bottles and both cure ich, permanently.

(Not trying to be nasty, lots of folks enter this hobby blindly. )I though this thread was a joke until ,you mentioned the Petco guy. I'd read a couple of good books on our hobby, you can't learn this hobby from just the forum. And certainly not Petco. You need a bigger tank ASAP, try Craigslist, and post your problem on the disease forum. You may be able to save this fish.

Now I've heard the the smallest tank someone has put a tang into, I'm surprise someone hasn't tried putting a tang ( and I don't mean the orange powder stuff) into a drinking glass. lol

To add to this with more info to help the OP...read about treating fish with copper; don't just add it to your display tank as it will kill invertebrates and most likely attach to your substrate and rock killing any future invertebrate additions

Ah:debi:, the tang has ich because it is so stressed out in the tank you have it in. A 6g tank!!? Get real, I don't mean to sound harsh but that is ridiculous. Petco needs to be slapped in the face! First off " kordon ich attack", never heard of it and I'm willing to bet my tank that it will do nothing for the ich. If you got the tang from petco take it back to them and get the manager and tell him or her they need to fire everyone who works with the fish there because they are complete idiots. The smallest tank any tang should be out into (Tomini) is a 6ft 125g. :headwallblue:

My hippo tang is only bout an 1" long right now can't get get a pic of him cuz he keeps hiding but this is a pic of the tank ImageUploadedByTapatalk1374166404.123027.jpg

Your display tank is about 119 gallons to small ... and you just bought a 1 gallon QT tank, that the fish will be in for 4-6 weeks ...oh boy...i highly suggest you go to a local fish store and NOT petco ...

FYI you can't control ammonia and nitrites in a 1g tank, with the lack of experience you have in this hobby all around don't try hypo YOU will kill the tang this way for sure. You won't be able to do hypo correctly let alone try and match your ph. I'm sure you don't have any Kalk on hand either. You need to get rid of the tang and think neon goby or something else that is a nano fish. Try picking up a few books and reading them why don't you? Here are two The Reef Aquarium by Julian Sprung and James Delbeek and The Marine Fish Health and Feeding Handbook by Bob Goemans and Lance Ichinotsubo

Tang issues aside, hyposalinity is very hard to pull off especially for someone new. I would use a copper medication or tank transfer method. If you look at the top of the new to hobby or fish disease forum there are stickies that will answer your questions on how to treat ich.

Also once you start treating you DT must remain fallow, meaning no fish in the tank. I prefer a 10 week fallow period.

I would give serious thought to just returning the Hippo. Even at 1" they are a very active fish and in the end he will most likely die. But it is your fish and money.

Steps to take:
1. take tang back to petco
2. take 1 gal qt back to petco
3. break down the bio cube and store it dry for a while.
4. read sticky on how to setup a tank.
5. read sticky on tang and tank sizes.
6. after reading ask questions in Forum intended fish buy ask question before purchase.
7. once you have all that info then figure your budget and fish u like to keep.
8. buy appropriate tank size and equipment
9. setup the tank and cycle it
10. setup a qt
11. read sticky on how to setup a qt and proper medication procedures.
12. buy the tang and place it in qt
13. treat it in qt according to sticky guidelines then place it in main
14. enjoy your tank.

if you need help finding some of the information you can click on blue number under my screen name, it will take you to my blog there you will find most of the stickys and guides step by step.
Good Luck

Note: with my 18 yrs of experience(i can bet) if you miss any of the above you will be back here asking for help again so learn the hobby and do it right the first time thats why we are here, not to criticize but to point you in right direction.

I don't know where people get this line of thinking that just because it's small like 1" they can put into a small environment. It's like putting a grey and french angel in a 10 gal. *they think* "oh it's so small and cute" and they are wondering why the fish died and them losing money.. You have keep in the mind the swimming space they require even when they are small and "cute" as well as how big they will get and how fast..

I would take bnumair suggestions before you dive into any further.
