My tank keeps jumping to 82

I've had my 125g with 60g sump up and running since last September in Michigan. In the last month my tank will periodically jump up to 82+ degrees and I assumed it was because it was getting warmer and my air was not on yet. I didn't think the room temp of 72 going to 74 would raise my tank temp of 80 to 82. I wondering if this is common or could there be another cause like one of my 2 Mag12's heating up or something???? The temp seems to go up at night when the room temp isn't as warm as in the day, canopy is off but sump is enclosed. Will 82 do immediate damage to the corals?

Could be a bad heater? I went thru 2 heaters in six months, do you have a control for the heater? Apex/Temp control?

Mag 12 are notorious for adding heat to tanks. You could look at adding more efficient pumps or adding a fan to blow across the top of the tank/sump.

Also as JP_esp stated check your heaters. I highly recommend an APEX to keep heaters in check.

82 is nothing to worry about. Some people keep their tanks around 82 year round. Room temp will definitely affect the temperature of the tank, even a couple degrees. I keep mine set to 77, but with the weather getting warmer and the house staying around 72 with the a/c instead of 68-70, my tank is closer to 78. You could even drop the heater setting a tad to help offset it.

Have you calibrated your heaters? I've seen them off by 4 degrees right out of the factory box. Use a quality lab grade thermometer to calibrate them. Ultimately a controller is always the best option but they are expensive. I agree a fan is a great idea, you can cool a tank down 3-4 degrees simply with a fan.

Sorry I should have added that I use an APEX so my heater is not at fault. I did temporarily unplug my ato so my last sump compartment has been getting to within an inch or so from the MAG12 body. Does it need more water around it to cool it possibly. Thinking I will add fans in the sump cabinet and in the canopy controlled by the APEX. I'm thinking about trying to find a larger computer type fan. Any suggestions?
