As stated my tank temp was 74 this moring :( messed with hearter controler temp coming back up slowly. How bad is this temp drop be on my tank ? What temp does cold strart to hurt a reef tank ?

Not sure at what temp it starts to be a problem but a couple times now I've unplugged heaters during moves and whatnot and forgot until the next day, tanks been down to about 72 and nothing died or bleached out, all lps/softies though.

I had something like this happen to me last week - a thunderstorm caused a power surge, my ranco temp controller hung with an "E2". Since I'd allowed my Neptune controller to fall out of sync with my email server it didn't get an email alert to me (all my bad).

The result was my tank droppped from the normal 79-80 to between 72-75 for three days before I found the problem.

The good news is that once I put the heater controller back on it brought the temp back up over about 6 hours - and everything - coals, inverts, fish, etc. seem to be fine...

Currently my tank is running 82 during the day with 3 x 250w MH's going, and dropps down to about 74 at night. Livestock hasn't shown any signs of stress from this either. Been going this way since the weather started cooling down here in OK. During winter, the temp will stay more stable around 74-76. Never been a real problem before. I do try to keep the temp more stable around 78 but it's a losing battle and since nobody seems to care, i don't worry too much about it anymore.

How big of a deal it is will depend on what your temp normally is. If you normally keep your temp in the 70s and if your tank normally sees fluctuations, it's not a huge deal, especially if it didn't stay there long. If you normally keep your tank stable in the 80s it could be bad news.

74 is a bit below the average yearly low for reefs (76), but it's still within the range corals can be found in.

What was the reason that the temp dropped like that... My tank stays at 80 degrees year round but i have a heater in my tank set at 78 that way it doesnt drop... Also that heater is ran to a different outlet in case the GFCI blows the temp stays where it needs to...

Should be no problem, I ran my tank at 72-74 for 2 weeks to see if I could keep the temp down. (Was going to pipe a seahorse tank into it) But decided not to and run the tank separate. But I seen no ill affect on my corals or fish. My tank runs 75 at night and usually creeps up to around 78 during the day. My Corals actually seem to do better in the lower temp range. I did have my tank set at 78-82. JMO

A friend of mine had a chiller malfunction drop his 210 reef down to 56 degrees one night. Took over 12 hours to bring it back up to 78. He only lost a couple corals and small fish. I don't think 74 will hurt anything.
