My TBS Tank

Hello, my tank is now a little past 1 month old so I decided to created my tank thread. I've always wanted to start a saltwater tank but always got discouraged after asking friends what they thought about saltwater tanks and getting the same old "it's very expensive" and "it's a lot harder than a freshwater tank". I took the plunge and got the tank on 4/19 after reading and researching on and off for the the past year.

After reading all the positive reviews about TBS I decided to mail Richard and get some live rocks from him. The process was as easy as can be and the first shipment of rocks came on 4/23. The live rock and sand I got was teeming with life. I even got a lawnmower blenny hitchhiker in my shipment!

My first time aquascaping ever:

Unfortunately with all the good life on the rock, there were some bad. I also got a few gorillas which I removed whenever I saw them which was fairly easy and some cirolanid isopods. At times I would catch 8 or 9 isopods at night and in the morning then see only 1 or 2 the following night. But they're fairly easy to catch with a turkey baster as well.

After about a week or so, my tests were at the right levels so I contacted Richard for my 2nd shipment. Some choppy waters prevented him from getting the 2nd shipment to me that weekend but was able to the next weekend on 5/14 which, coincidentally was my bday. The 2nd shipment was everything every one else had raved about. Richard throws in a lot of extras that he really doesn't have to since you're really only buying rock and sand. But you get so much more like corals, sponges, anemones, plants, and even better live rock than before!

I call him Frank the Tank because he's huge!

I also have spotted 3 porceleins in the back wall but can't get a good enough pic. My peppermint shrimp just hides all day, he never ever comes out. There are tons of worms, copepods, amphipods, featherdusters, spaghetti worms, and just various life in the tank now.

I did get 2 giant parasitic isopods in this last shipment and perhaps even more cirolanids since I caught 8 one night then 9 the following morning then only found 2 last night. I'm waiting to starve them all out before I add any fish.

All in all, even with my cirolanid problem, I don't see why anyone would buy rocks from anywhere else. Richard is easy to get a hold of, very friendly, and just gives you free stuff for rocks that are really alive. I've gone to the LFS and seen about their rocks. It's just not the same.

More pics since I'm only allowed 10 per post:

EDIT holy crap, sorry about the size of these pics...

Thats amazing live rock, nice tank too. Are you feeding the tank to supply the non-photosynthetic animals? Did you experience any die off? What are cirolanids? How many pounds is in the tank and you said you got two shipments, why? Thanks, I'm trying to decide if I should go with dead or live rock.

i'm not feeding the tank right now to make sure those parasites die off...of course there will be some die off but it wasn't much, the rock was really fresh...the only things that seem to die are the sponges which is unfortunate because they're always such pretty colors

richard sends 2 shipments, the first cycles your tank and the rest are the 2nd half of the rocks plus the clean up crew...i bought the package for a 35 gallon tank which is 70lbs. of live rock but i left 3 rocks out because i couldn't get them to fit anywhere...i gave up after over 6+ hours of aquascaping and just put them in another tank

WOW awesome rock! Is that an RBTA that Richard gave you??

The entire tank is TBS except for the RBTA and 6 snails, lol...that was a bday gift from the gf before the 2nd shipment came in...i know we're not supposed to keep anemones until 6+ months established tank but she didn't know any better...so far so good though, it's doing just fine and so are the other anemones that Richard did send

haha unless he bought that, he has a hitchhiker thats would have cost as much as the rock itself...if not more...

the RBTA was 80 bucks at the LFS...rock, not including shipping was over 400! lol

Your rock looks just as good as mine! Haha I love seeing some of the similarities....

Keep an eye on the frank the tank,..., he'll start messing with stuff soon,

aww, like what? i've seen him eating bits and pieces off sponges and using the cucumbers as something to hold on to while eating algae off the back glass...he's generally been pretty peaceful, i'd hate it if i had to remove him from the main tank

some more pics:

cup coral

If you look closely in the middle, it's a pistol shrimp running out to get some food...i've also seen him shoot an emerald crab and a hermit crab for getting too close to his doors...he thinks the entire rock is his, lol

Some barnacles growing on this clam

Same pistol shrimp...i have about 3 of them but i haven't actually seen the others, i've just seen the molts...one has a bright green claw while the other a bright orange

2 baby brittle stars in this tube coral

i think that's a sea squirt?

My decorator crab never caused any trouble. He usually just walked around slowly with his various party hats.

Watch out for those pistol shrimp. They will turn into a full scale excavation crew when they grow up. I had one in a 20 gallon that literally dug out almost the entire sand bed and deposited it on top of the base rocks. I eventually had to take all of the rocks out and catch him. I gave him his own little tank where he could work on his construction projects to his heart's content.

Crazy. Mine must not be so ambitious, or a much smaller species.

+1 on the decorator not generally causing trouble. I had mine for a year, then found him dismantled...or dismantis-ed I should say. Still have the mantis though, lol.

you were right, Brwestern...

yesterday morning i woke up to a half eaten mushroom coral...i didn't want to immediately point fingers at Frank but i had my doubts...then i saw him break off an entire stalk out of my glove polyps and start eating it...i picked him up and moved him away...then last night i caught him red handed ripping apart that same mushroom from the morning and eating it, not decorating himself with it...so 3 strikes and he's out of the display tank :(

That sucks!

I've been pretty lucky to be home most days lately, so I've been keeping an eye on mine... I just scoot him away from anything he may really want...my local LFS will take him for trade when I'm ready to...so that's an option

It sucks because they really are fun to watch. They just need some behavior bootcamp

I plan on setting up a 36gallon tank using TBS rocks and sand. I want a minimalistic aquascaping though. It's going to be a rimless cube and want to cut back on amount of LR in the display. Based on the denseness of their rocks, how many pounds should I buy? I may put a couple rocks in the sump also. And how much water were the rocks and sand shipped in? I figure the water would quite a bit to the weight of the package increasing shipping charges. Water weighs 8.34lb/gallon so one pound of water would increase shipping charges by $8 to $9. And did you buy the TBS package or simply buy the live rock and sand? I might get the package but for a smaller sized tank considering I don't want 70lbs of live rock. That would be way too much rock for a minimalist aquascape.

Ya I don't think you need 70 pounds. I left 3 rocks out that I couldn't seem to fit anywhere. 70 for a 35 is on the high end of the 1-2lbs. of live rock and sand per gallon so you can do a lot less.

Shipping wasn't too bad considering it's same day shipping and then you factor in the weight of the packages. Richard ships them early in the morning and you get it within a few hours depending on how far you are from FL. I got mine around noonish both times, first time cost around 60 bucks and the 2nd shipment was a little over 90 bucks (Midway airport, Chicago, IL). He does put a lot of water in the bags to keep as much of the rock and organisms alive as possible and the bags are very thick and heavy.

Very painless process, just shoot him a message and he usually gets back to you within a few hours.

Hey Porkchop, I received my shipment last Saturday from TBS, the Rock is incredible...did you have to do any water changes? According to richard, if the Ammonia goes over 1 ppm you need to do a water change. I have already done two in 5 days...

Strangest thing, I didn't have to do any water changes on the first shipment. Ammonia spiked but remained under 1 for 7 days. It wasn't until the 2nd shipment that my ammonia really spiked (something or somethings must have died that i couldn't find). I used 2 test kits to confirm and it was ridiculously high in the 3-4ppm range for 3-4 days. So I had to do 3 water changes to keep that down along with dosing with Seachem Prime to neutralize the ammonia and nitrites. That worked and everything stayed alive.
