I figured I just ask here rather than making another thread,

kharn, what demenstions are you housing your L. maculata in? What would you recommend? (I'm looking at a 15 gallon collum that reaches 2 feet in height.. knowing they never move far I was thinking it's enough. Still just planning, didn't make any offical dicisions yet.)

THat depends on the size of the L. maculata. They grow slowly, so you don't have to allow a lot for growth. In the field adults (> 16 cm) inhabit u-shaped burrows that are less than twice as deep as the animal is long. A 20 cm animal would do fine in a sand bed 30 cm deep. A juvenile L. m will dig a simple vertical burrow three or four times deeper than it is long but as long as the sand is about twice as deep as it is long, it will be fine.

I keep my animals in two types of tanks. For small individuals I like to use a satellite aquarium attached to a larger tank. The 12 cm L. sulcata that I photograph spearing fish is in a tank that is 35 cm tall, 25 cm long and 10 cm wide. It is filled with sand to a depth of 25 cm and connected to an 80 gal main tank using a small pump and siphon.

My large pairs (30 cm) are in 100 gal. tanks with a sand bed 40 cm deep. Rather than fill the tank entirely with sand (asking for disaster!), I partition in lengthwise with a think plate of plexiglass creating a smaller internal tank 16 cm wide and 50 cm deep. There are lots of holes drilled near the top of the plexiglass divider to allow water to flow from one side to the other and to promote flow the canister filter draws water on one side and delivers it to the other. The horizontal part of the burrow is about 1 m.

I see, On adverage what would you estimate the growth rate as? (cm gained per year or so)

Sounds like if I got a small specimen no larger than 15cm it would take a very long time to outgrow even a 10 gallon. (Assuming the large water volume is mostly just for better water quality management. )

The aquarium I was looking at is (in inches) 13.6"L x 13.8"W x 24.8"H which seems to be perfectly fine for a smaller specimen but I wasn't too sure about a fully grown one.

Have you ever altered your species feeding habits (Dr. Caldwell ?)

I'm curious if the animal will grow swifter / faster if nutrient up take is swifter / faster / larger ?

I just get the feeling that you certainly do NOT feed your individuals in a similar manner of mine....and I can see an INSANE amount of growth for Morgoth my L.sulcata from whence I first obtained him....

I just get the feeling that your individuals are under a far more refined diet / something very very adhered to in a research & record manner... ?

I might be wrong I dunno :)

Either way the fact remains the same to me and I really REALLY REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLY wish I had of measured Morgoth properly with photos when I first got him -_-

Can't say so much for my L.mac cause he did come in fairly large...

I lost ALL my original photos & videos when my PC shat itself a few years ago, prompting me to now have multiple large 4TB external hard drives.

My L. sulcata male is fed only live fish or an occasional grass shrimp when I forget to buy a fish. It will catch a fish every 4-5 days, but refuses to strike if I put in a fish sooner than that.

Small L. maculata provided food ad lib grow quite fast - up to 10% body length per molt, but slow their growth as they become reproductive.

My 'uniform' pieces have been acquired, the last few portions obtained, these being...

The eye patch, the bandana & most importantly, the hat! There are still a few other minor things that I need 1 not exactly minor...these being...

The contact lens(es) which I deem rather important and also the matching to uniform, long black leather pants and a shirt (both being tailor made, from leather already obtained).

Then.....it's all off to the embroidery! (Minus the Hat & Eye patch, these 2 pieces are getting physical things placed on them), oh and obviously the contact lens(es) aren't going to get the embroidery...... LOL

But it's all moving forward ;)

That outfit is pretty fantastic, and is giving me some ideas. It would be cool to design a shirt harness with foam rubber/latex sculpted folded raptorial appendages and maxillipeds under the jacket. Ive been wanting to make a centipede sleeved jacket for a while.
Awesome man, I like it alot

I am creating a personification with this character, it is the face of all I do and will do.

You call it the Bermuda Triangle....we call it, Gonodak.

I always get a good laugh out of your videos haha!

Now I'm at work wondering why there aren't any mantis superheroes/villains.
I can't even begin to imagine the destructive force a chiragra or odontodactylus would have if it were the size of a human.

Anyone have a range of newtons for any species mantis strike? I could calculate it if I had those numbers.

You cannot reason with it...You cannot bargain with it...Because it is not a human Being...it is a demon sent straight from hell...
