My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

Finally...The Leviathan this big boy has been busy, excavating a tunnel deep below (on the bottom of the tank) stretching from one end to the very next evident by a pair of windows he has also made so conveniently for me.

Stay tuned for more :P

The best thing about having these creatures in individual setups catered for there specific needs, is that it provides me with 10-20x more opportunities then what I previously had at capturing them on camera, some as I said earlier I couldn't even get on camera because of the way they were all setup.

When I got back from work today, Maximus seemed really fired up for some reason and started to dish out threats much like Minnie and I didn't want to waste the emotion on myself so I got the camera =)

Along with that I made a few more videos =D all based around The Leviathan, all with the content that I currently have of him (the most of any individual) not only that but 2 bonuses, new content (he took a fish this evening) & not any fish.....I finally caught one of the Humbugs in my tiny goldfish net (MUST get a bigger net, need 2 really...) and I thought I'd give it a go one more time, if he doesn't take the Humbug this time, then there going...

He smashed it, no second guesses! =D

Here is the short Lysiosquillina maculata compilation I made, its basically the same as the long version however the music is different and there is no slow motions in the short version (slow motions are in long version, which is what makes it long lol....).

Long version inc... =D

In the pix of Leviathan down in his bottom window it looks so much like a huge Yellow Jacket that my wife walking by stopped to say "œMantis I get but who is keeping Yellow Jackets?! That's just dangerous! And OMG that thing must be huge!" You guys my not have yellow jackets in Australia but in the states we got um. In Colorado we got them bad these little guys don't stop stinging you till you or it is dead! Lol So you can see how she assumed you built a tank to keep them lol. She's nutty.

Not sure if we get Hornets but we get wasps down here

At first I was confused cause you kept saying 'leatherjacket' to us down here that is a fish the leatherjacket trigger fish =D lol

So I gave my official list over to my good friend and collector and although he isn't the best with I.D. (specially in the field) I am hoping he comes up with at least 1 on the list =) they are ordered in the manner at which I most want them however I don't know about the top 3....being relatively deepwater species.....that and H.aus (#1) & both Bathysquillas have VERY limited information on them and I could find no pictures of H.aus (so going to go off H.cal) and could only find 1 picture of each Bathysquilla....

If any I really hope he gets the top 3 :D however I did tell him, "If you see any large(300mm+), colorful (not black and white striped), spearer, to bag it and tag it! Then report back"

#1 Hemisquilla australiensis

#2 Bathysquilla crassispinosa

#3 Bathysquilla microps

#4 Echinosquilla guerinii

#5 Odontodactylus japonicus

#6 Odontodactylus cultrifer

#7 Gonodactylus chiragra

This will likely take a while to fulfill however I have faith in his abilities, also if he does manage to pull through with them all faster then anticipated...some of my current inhabitants will either need new homes or need to be sold...(no large spearers of large smashers just the small ones, less then 100mm).

As promised...the Longer L.mac Compilation, featuring different music and slow motion footage!

Hope you liked it =)

Those videos (and pictures) are awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I am wondering though, what type of shrimp is that and where do you purchase?

Also, what type of crabs and where do you purchase?

I would like to start feeding my peacock more live food but not sure what to get from where.

How is the noise level from all those open drains? I ask cus I know this is your TV area.

You can barely hear them, you can hear my air con / temp tanks sumps drip tray over all my stands =) so sound wise I couldn't of hoped for better! It's more about the future like adding 1 big skimmer to do 1,000L or adding 3 small skimmers (1 for each stand) where I forsee things getting loud....

Na man my bubble king 300 external is quiet. You can hear my vortechs over it. Its all in the pump on the skimmer.

What type of shrimp ? What do you mean as in the mantis(Lysiosquillina maculata) or the feeder shrimp (no idea of species, these were freshwater shrimp from my LFS that I slowly drip acclimatized over about 6hours which gave them life in saltwater for a good few days, long enough for most to be fed to the stomatopods.

The crabs I get are hitchhikers that come in on others stuff and they don't want them, soon to collect my own from the sea.

Hope this helps!

It makes a lot of sense that you just go out and collect. The amount of time devoted to keeping these 3 systems is intense. Looking forward to seeing what you’ll find. Out in California they have what the locals call sand crabs (Emerita talpoidea) I have wanted to try giving these to my mantis for a long time. These little critters are good swimmers (only backwards) and amazing diggers when the water line hits the sand. Do you have anything of this nature out there? If so I would think on a 15 min collection you should have enough to feed every smasher you got. Also this would be amazing to watch a mantis case one of these down.

Found them you got these Hippa (crustacean) in the same family I wonder how similar they are.

Not sure, never seen one of them before o_O

Either way my plan is to use a freshwater shrimp trap (since there holes are usually smaller since they target smaller creatures) to catch crabs/shrimps and a cast net to catch fish.

This weekend will be my first run =) the shrimp I used in the videos were freshwater from the LFS I wanted to test something, although most were eaten that night I put some in my Temp Tank which is the live food storage, I acclimatized them really slow (overnight) and upon putting them in I didn't loose any until 48hrs I think there was 1 dead then another then another leaving me with 2 now but they look fine (others looked real sluggish).

Looked big in the pic I saw lol

I would be hesitant to feed my tank tenants anything I grab out of the sea just because of fear of unknowns. You know. Parasites, diseases, ect. What is it like 11:30pm there? It's 6:30am here.

DO you think a glass tank can hold enough sand to house a Mac? They have had a poor poor Mac at the pet store for months. It has no sand to dig in and is kept inside a small plastic container inside a larger tank. It's about 3.5" long. I feel bad for it but I don't have the funds for acrylic.

Feeding The Leviathan this evening...

He really nailed the poor fish, the fish basically hit the water and was instantly taken....hence why you don't really see it in the video (still learning how to best position camera).
