My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

Well as soon as I found the music I had long been searching for...I couldn't wait to put it into a video :P and this is the result, it is based off the 2007 Earth movie trailer by DisneyNature, it was so hard to find this music....

1080p HD capability

Hope you like it :D

That was a great video. I loved the quick highlights of all your different species in action. Good stuff.

I had been searching for the music for months and whilst I only actually found 1 of the 2 songs, the first half (prior to the Leviathan in High Speed) was music direct from the trailer due to my inability to find the name of it, either way there were only 2 SFX noises in that portion from start to spearer HS, the major one being the very beginning (in the trailer a camera is going over a water fall, so I had to simulate the sound of crashing water with something, a.k.a the waves).

Glad you liked it :)

Well Kharn, I haven't had the time to post on here but I've followed with my mouth agape at all your pictures, videos, and crustacean friends... Amazing. Truly. And congratulations on hitting that 1,000 replies mark :P

But back to the stomatopods! I acquired an upgraded camera over Christmas much like you, and I can film continuous 120fps 720p HD as well as VGA-quality 240fps, so I look forward to capturing footage at least half as good as yours! That new 400fps footage is simply amazing. Beautiful demonstration of the capabilities of large spearers. Really. I cannot wait for more!

The system continually gets more and more impressive, keep it up!

Glad your enjoying it all :D wasn't actually aware that I have had over 1,000 replies o_O

One thing I swiftly picked up with filming at High Speed is that your going to want a good or decent video editor and secondly lots of light, the higher the FPS the more light your going to need...

I want to try out the 1200FPS and try to edit in some better quality seems to work well with the 400FPS (as noticeable in the Leviathan v Trigger short HS clip).

Thank you for the tips. I am set on the video editor and recently upgraded to metal halides for the mantis, so I believe I have that covered!

1200fps is really impressive. I don't know how close you can get but I think it would be interesting to try to get a closer shot of the actual meeting of the raptorial appendages with the prey, especially at 1200fps. The possibilities are endless with such capability!

Not sure about replacing the lights on the tanks themselves with halides....I must admit that is something I personally wouldn't do...(even spearers can get shell rot).

Having said this, all I did...was went down to my local hardware store and purchased 1 of them quad flood light stands :D was only $100 and I get 4x400W Halides which I can position anywhere on the stand I have them box the camera so 2 above and to the sides and 2 below and to the sides, camera in middle of all 4.

As for getting close enough...I found out a simple technique to get closer :) because 400FPS res is 640x240 it makes the video very wide but very short in height, I just turn the camera vertical so the video is now very tall but very slim (which is much better for spearers).

I should rephrase: I upgraded for the mangroves :P But, nonetheless, I am aware of the potential for it. However, I have done some reading and given that the stomatopod (at least in my set-up) can get away from the light to complete darkness with ease, a suggestion made by Gonodactylus, I am going to cross my fingers until I develop an alternate lighting scenario.

That's an excellent idea! You're not trying to grow coral in the case of filming... Simple, yet effective.

Ah. True. True. Yep. That makes sense!

Today I went about adding 2 of the 3 other DIY PVC burrows to their individual compartments & permanent resting places, both of them went to my G.ternatensis, Nicole & Tintin. When I added Nicole she darted straight from the net and under the plateau for Ric's she has not yet made her way into the DIY PVC burrow within her compartment, whilst with Tintin I positioned the net over the top entrance to the DIY PVC burrow in his compartment, in a few minutes he darted in and ever since hasn't come out, I can see him poking his head around the corner up top.

Due to their very small size still they should be able to navigate through the DIY PVC very easily and plug what they want too, make slimmer by dragging substrate into the burrow, (but ultimately they are the largest of all 'small smashers species' topping out at 125mm), so in time they will both fill their 32mm dia burrows.

My theory behind these permanent DIY PVC burrows is contrary to standard stomatopod temporary hosting of PVC where by the PVC in a temporary situation should be the slightest bit wider in diameter then the specimen of stomatopod that will be hosting it. For these DIY PVC burrows, the longer they are in the tanks the more 'effective' they become...(from age/algae etc. things just look more natural), so rather then make them a little wider then the specimen of stomatopod (the individuals size) that would be living within the single PVC frame, I made it for 'Maximum Species Potential', so even though initially the DIY PVC burrow looks to be too large, in time as the animal grows it will fill the burrow with its own bulk/size.

I added 1 'vine' of Caulerpa to Eves (G.smithii) compartment, wrapping it around the top entry/exit of the DIY PVC burrow (where light is strongest) in the hopes it would grow over the PVC help to hide it even more....it has grown a lot and has nearly completely covered her Top entrance, working just like I'd hoped, depending on how it grows I might remove all the coral out of her compartment for now and let the Caulerpa grow all over the PVC, leave the substrate free for coral :) Eves compartment is still a bit of a test one being such a tough species G.smithii.

More to come with Pics :D

Here is a quick shot of Nicole under her Ric bench still a bit to nervous to venture out.

Here is Tintin now having made his way down the burrow more and poking around the corner entrance of the branch that holds his Ric bench.

Their individual small stature is obvious considering Rocky & Eve both have the same diameter PVC but due to them being more then twice the G.ternatensis current size, fill the 32mm nicely.

I use 3" for my O.Scyllarus regardless of the size. I found that if it's a little too big she brings rubble in and out to adjust it to her liking. No need to up root and disrupt the entire system to switch to a larger tube.

That was the idea, to try and keep each DIY PVC burrow in the tank permanently and not have to remove it but, it is contradictory to general stomatopod:pvc storage, being that the PVC should be as slim as possible....

Rite now Tintin isn't even as long as his DIY PVC burrow is wide...still, he has not left the confines of it yet and Nicole is yet to move from under the Ric bench still to paranoid xD...

Here is an FTS of the Middle Tank within STAND A that hosts my 2 G.ternatensis now with their individual DIY PVC burrows in place.

More to come as they get use to their new environments :)

Here are a few more pics :D a little more detailed then the last.

Tintin

Nicole

Here are a couple of other pic's I'd like to share :) both detailing the Superman Rhodactis in focus, notice the price difference though above each...

$7.90

$40.00

Can you see a difference o_O ?

More to come :D

A trio of videos :D

Up first is The Leviathan finally bringing down the large vroliki angel.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/p3cPepvuRJU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Here is Morgoth taking his pick from a school of Chromii (won't do this again, camera cannot focus as seen in this video, the cluster of fish makes the camera refocus...unless it's a setting I have on the camera...).
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/krNVsXGgb58" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Finally here is Morgoth again (Leviathan is likely sated for a while after taking that large fish so may not see him for week+) this time I recorded Morgoth taking down 1 fish (so the camera stayed focused) but also in High Speed @ 400FPS!
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/b36Iy2poTiw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

More to come as I know Morgoth is keen for the rest of these Chromii, also going for a little crab collection soon so should have some smasher activity later as well :D
