My Water Look Green

Thats a big time no no. Never use sea water.

Says who? NSW is used a lot, and the people who do use it have great results. How could it be bad to use NSW, if that is where the corals/fish come from? I personally don't use it, but I know people who do and their tanks are nice and healthy.

i dont tink is the water i tink is the morning sun whats geting the water like that i am doing a water change to see results

thesaent, I think it is the sun. THere are a few places where you can safely buy salt water from the sea, if the chap selling it goes far enough out to get away from the pollution and high nitrate near shore. But you still should check your salinity to be sure he didn't have a lot of evaporation before it got to you, and check your other levels. Water that's been bottled and lugged about might undergo a few changes, and above all else, you want to be sure the bottles were used only for water.

A 10% water change should help. And algae is not a bad thing. Your tank looks as if it's starting to cycle. You need live rock.

Regardless, you cannot use seawater. Trust me on that one. And yes it is the water. The sun does not make your tank green unless its in pure direct sunlight where you get ton of green algae on the glass all you see is green.

I'm sorry dude, but you are wrong. Obviously you can use it since people do, AND have success. Please don't tell people they are doing something wrong when you don't know facts on what you are talking about.

i know people who only do sea water and there tank is doing really really good with litel and simple system in fact they go out with the boat and get the water from out sea

its florida the water is really good warm and cleand in most areas

I would like to hear some FACTS on why you cant use real ocean water. I have never used it but people use it all the time with great success if I lived near the ocean it would save me lots of money though... come on throw us some facts

First of all, it depends where you collect the water. Would you want to take the risk of having some oil in your tank spilled by a ship? I would hope not.

There are also many other factors assuming you know the relationship between currents and water quality. Ever heard of Red Tide? Yeah you put one drop of that in your tank and your done. How about introducing new pathogens to your fish or corals that kill them. Or introducing phytoplankton thats toxic or in too much quantity that can disrupt the chemistry.

There are some facts. exacta123.

Hate to break it to you smcnally, I am not wrong. Sure there are people that use it and get success, it all depends on location. Take the chance. Loose 500 dollars worth of corals see if I care after that I have told you my warning.

Thanks for the FACTS I will take them into consideration, just a little advice you really dont have to be so offensive :)

So then maybe you shouldn't use your local water because is can have chloramines and other harsh chemicals in it? The fact of the matter is that you filter your local water to rid it of nasty stuff, right? A reputable NSW supplier filters the water to an extent too. The guys around here that I've talked to that supply it run it through floss and carbon before delivery. All I'm saying is that I've heard more positive talk about the use of NSW than negative. To tell someone that it is absolutely bad for their tank is wrong. If it is your opinion, then say that...don't make it sound so black an white.

hey guys one small update i did a water change like 30g with sea water because it was left i dint have other but i put carbon in the fuge and the water is geting alot beter i will post some pictures tumorow if the water get much beter

Actually I use Ro/DI water that has NO chlormines im it or other harsh chemicles. Why would I use water with harsh chemicles? Explain that to me.

exacta123, your welcome on the facts. Facts are facts so take them into consideration.

BTW, I am not offensive, your just taking it that way.

I wouldn't say is a big time no no, but i would still test it before you use it. Like someone said their are plenty of people who use it and there are companys who also sell it.

I think the green water/yellow tint good be a phase your tank is going through since its new can't remember what it is called but my old 72 went through the same thing. Lots of water changes and keeping up my water qaulity and it went away. Also adding some carbon could help as well.

55semireef? Judging by the cyano or diatom bloom on the sand in your avatar I don't think you should be the sole source of information on water quality in reef tanks. As a matter of fact I don't see any corals in the background. Actually.... I don't even see good coraline growth. Maybee you need to spend some time this weekend on your tank. Maybee do a water change? Tune your Seaclone up or something :D

By voicing your OPINION as fact you really come across as........... well a few things come to mind. Either way.....

thesaent14: Sorry you have to put up with this nonsense in your thread. My advice: If you know of other people using this same NSW with success keep using it. It's that simple. The green was probably just a small phytoplankton bloom (which isn't really bad for a new tank). Just make sure the guy isn't getting the water from a dock in the marina. :D
