Mysterious New Guy

Hello all!

I'm new to the RC community so I thought I'd introduce myself. First let me say in the most non-creepy stalker-like way that I've been watching you. I've been surfing RC for the past few years to look for wisdom to solve the common and not so common problems that comes with this hobby. I figured it was time to join this group so other people can learn from my mistakes and victories.

Enough about you, lets talk about me...

I've had aquariums my entire life but jumped from freshwater to saltwater about 9 years ago with a 46 Bow front Predator tank (Not the best idea). I made all the rookie mistakes but thanks to responsible aquarists and forums like this I learned from my mistakes. I converted the 46gal into a small FOWLR and experienced some decent successes working on a college student budget.

I sold that tank after graduating and taking a job that required extensive travel and was forced to live vicariously through friends with tanks and public aquariums. After many years of travel, I've become more settled and jumped back in with a bigger budget and bigger dreams. I purchased my current tank from a person in Nashville who was moving and couldn't take the tank with them. The tank was in disrepair due to poor filtration and worse husbandry. I moved it to my new home (1 hour away) and started the adventure of bringing this tank to it's potential glory (still a work in progress). I removed the neglected undersized canister filter and built my own sump. Drilling a tank with fish in it sucks. Especially when you're only mostly sure it's not tempered. I did all the tricks with laptops/cell phone/sacrifices to the reef gods. Still, that was a stressful moment. Needless to say, it didn't explode and after plumbing the sump and throwing the skimmer in and several water changes later it started to turn over a new leaf. It's been up and running in it's current home for 6 months and more than 6 years in it's last home. Since this is my first attempt at keeping a reef, I want a softie/polyp dominated tank. My wife and I have definitely caught the zoanthid bug.

Current Tank Info: 140gal glass bull nose peninsula aquarium, 180lbs+ Live rock, crushed coral sand bed, 2x Tao Tronics LEDs, Hydor wave maker with 3 pumps, glass-holes overflow, 18 gal sump, Reef Octopus Diablo 160 XS Protein Skimmer, Reef Octopus MF2000 Advance Media Reactor, RO/DI, Supportive Wife

Live stock: Purple Tang, Emperor Angel (Juvi), Koran Angel (Juvi), Mated pair of Gold Band Maroon Clownfish, Midas Blenny, Firefish, 3 Azure Damsels, Royal Gramma, CuC

Coral: Several types of mushrooms (emerald green, blood red), 3 colonies of green button polyps, a growing list of Zoas (Radio Active Dragoneyes, Orange Spot, Red Eyes, X-Men, Blue Kisses, Sweet Dreams, Sour Apples, Lunar Eclipse, Bloody Marys, and some Fire and Ice that are melting for reasons unknown.), and several green and orange ricordias

Other info: I've been carbon dosing (vodka) for the past 5 months with great success. Coupled with good husbandry and a kick butt skimmer it's an awesome tool. Plus who doesn't like their martinis briney?

Current problems/challenges: I have what I think is a Calcium Carbonate Precipitation issue. I think it's due to low levels of Magnesium. I'm waiting for my Mg test kit to come in and the 2 Part DIY Mg supplement and will raise it slowly and see what happens.
Problem #2 is a emerald crab that I think is snacking on my zoas. I'll be sneaking in after lights out with my red lens flash light and see what I can find...

Well this has been fun. Glad I made the jump from creeper to poster. I see this as the beginning of a wonderful relationship RC... :smokin:

I do notice what appears to be some precipitation .

What are you dosing now?
What do you use to agitate the water/weir? (overflow or PH aimed slightly up)
What test kits do you have?
How is the overall flow and type?
What are the other levels? pH temp salinity nitrate nitrite mg (when you get it)

In the pictures were the pumps/powerheads off?

Nice tank.

Love the Chrysiptera hemicyanea. One of my favorite fish.

Great first post. You had me at:"Enough about you, lets talk about me..." Very funny.

Thanks for the reply worm. At first I thought it was some kind of bacterial bloom due but ruled that out because the water is very clear despite the suspended flakes. I tried a filter sock and a siphon but that only cleared it up for a day. Plus the flakes have no smell. I know it's not micro bubbles because I have a good bubble trap in my sump. After researching the calcium carbonate issue, I think I've found my answer.

To answer your questions;

1) "What are you dosing?" I'm currently dosing Calc, Iodine, and vodka. The Calc is only dosed when needed (about once a week at most). I have no hard corals yet so the only thing that's pulling calcium is the coralline algae that's starting to explode in my tank. The Iodine is dosed every week now that I have more softies. The vodka dose is at its maintenance level and has been for 3 months now. I do a 20 gal water change every other week with Reef Crystals so my levels stay pretty consistent with a small coral population. As I get more corals, I'm thinking that a dosing pump will be a solid investment.

2) "What do you use to agitate the water/weir? (overflow or PH aimed slightly up)" Both. I have a glass-holes overflow on the flat panel of glass (left side of the tank as seen in the picture) as well as having my return from the sump pointed up at the water's surface. One of the PH (hydor 1600) is pointed slightly up as well.

3) "What test kits do you have?" I have the API Reef Master test kit for Calcium, Carbonate Hardness, Phosphate, and Nitrate. I have a Seachem Iodine test kit and Kent's liquid Iodine. I'm waiting for my Seachem Mg test kit to come in. Lastly a Refract meter for salinity.

4) "How is the overall flow and type?" This is something that I've been debating. In addition to the Mag 9 return pump (in the sump) that agitates the water's surface in the display, I have two Hydor 1500's connected to the Hydor wave maker. Each is set on the Left side of the tank pointing towards the front bull nose. One is slightly up and the other slightly down. They are on alternating flow in 15 second intervals. I have a smaller hydor that is pointing towards the one dead spot under the LR that I am tracking. It runs continuously. I get decent movement and it definitely reaches the front of the tank. When I throw mysis shrimp in they gets caught in the flow and I see decent movement. But it's only decent. Not extremely powerful. I've been considering getting two more 1500's and setting them up on the same panel to increase flow. Here is my idea... My tank is bullet shaped so the only place I want to keep PH is on the flat panel (bottom of the bullet). Right now my two PH s are set up one on the left side of that flat panel, the second on the right. They turn on and off in 15 second intervals. If I put two more in and set them up like the # "4" side of a dice and have Top Right PH and Bottom Left PH on for 15 seconds and when they turn off, the Bottom Right PH and Top Left PH turns on... Not sure. As always, I'm open for advice, comment, words of wisdom, heckling, and peanut gallery style commentary.

5) "What are the other levels? pH temp salinity nitrate nitrite mg (when you get it)." I will be testing the water this weekend (I do it weekly, same day same time) so I will get you my updated numbers then. Last week's numbers were as follows;
pH: 8.2 (rarely changes)
Temp: 79 (fluctuates between 79 and 80)
Salinity: 1.026 (test on calibrated refract meter)
Ammonia: 0 (never had an issue)
Nitrite: 0 (never had an issue)
Nitrate: <10 ppm (This is pretty standard. Most of the time it's undetectable but I recently added both angels and the purple tang within a week period so I believe that's what is causing my Nitrates to rise. Side note: I had no intention of adding two angels to my tank. Long story...)
Alk: 11 dKH (rarely changes)
Calc: 420-430 (I tend to dose when it drops below 400)
Phosphate: .025 (This was prior to setting up my Media reactor. I recently set it up with BRS HC GFO so I'm hoping to pull those numbers down)
Magnesium: ????
Coral Test: All zoas, shrooms, button polyps, and star polyps are happy and growing except the Fire and Ice Zoas that I got from LiveAquaria that are were looking bad when I opened the box and I'm having a hard time saving them.:headwallblue:

6) "In the pictures were the pumps/powerheads off?" Nope. They were on... hence my rambling in question 4.

Thanks Buzz!

I really like them too. They have so much personality and the colors are really vibrant. That picture was taken under my blue lights so it looks like it's glowing. Pretty nifty. I have 3 of them now. I started off with 5 but after 4 days in my tank one disappeared without a trace. After that, the three I currently have shunned the 4th. I think they knew something I didn't know. They are little punks and wouldn't let number four come out of his whole to swim, eat, or hang out. I tried to get him out but he's too quick and I couldn't move all that rock to get to him. After a week of that I never saw it again. Now I have one really big damsel and two smaller ones. Note to self, don't **** off my damsel fish...

Nice Post. Love the Midas Blenny - one of my favorite fish... Angels plus Reef = Trouble with a capital "T" but i know you know that. If you have been watching us, i am sure you have seen it all... Hopefully, mostly good! I did the same thing but with several different website. THought that RC was by far the most knowledgable and active. My suggestion- Feed all the corals- Osterfest and Phyto and they will all open up... Just do not feed too much as Trates will go up... Again, I know you knew that... LOL...

Thanks Mpfeiffer!

The Midas Blenny is one of my favorites too. He's a fatty too! Half the time I'm surprised he can make it back to his barnacle! He's a fan of nori... who'd of thunk it? It's funny to watch him and the tang fight over nori. He's got a napoleon complex.

So the angels... I might as well explain myself now. Emperor Angels are one of my favorite saltwater fish. I've always wanted one and did a lot of research about their compatibility (or potential lack thereof) in reef tanks. I knew it was a risk but I was hoping if I get a really young one that I could get before he developed bad habits then I may get lucky. So I decided to order one from LiveAquaria. I'm currently out of town for work so my wife was there to receive the order and acclimate the new fish. (Supportive Wife is the best thing for a married reefer. I highly recommend it.) So the wifey acclimates/dips (I have a 10gal that I use as a treatment tank for dips before I put new critters in the tank. I know I know. I need a QT tank. Trust me I know. Back to the story.) the new angel and then puts it in the main tank and snaps a few pics for me. Guess what I see in the pictures? A happy healthy Koran Angel swimming in and around my live rock. After several phone calls/emails with LA, they admit they may have sent me the wrong fish. "No worries" they say. They'll send me the fish I actually ordered and they were nice enough to not charge me for the Koran (although they did try in the beginning...). So now I've got two Angels of the same genus who may or may not snack on the coral. Right now they are both getting along and are being model citizens. So for now they stay, but when I get back in town, the Koran may be taking a trip to my LFS. Until them, it's like having a pair of pet tigers in your magic show... it's all cool now but one day it may go all "nature" on my zoas... fingers crossed.

Honestly the only thing I've target fed my zoas/polyps in the past is the "dirty water" from thawing out the mysis. I'll have to check out Osterfest and Phyto. Thanks for that.

Cool tank, couldn't get a good view of the whole tank shot, picture came out pretty small. I myself have definitely caught the zoanthid bug. I love how they all have the same structure but their colors can vary so widely. Really looks awesome to have a bunch of drastically different colored colonies near each other, makes for an explosion of color. My tank is new but I'm hoping all the different small frags and larger clusters of zoa's I have just spread and grow together and all over my live rock.

Those pictures were taken with my DSLR camera so the resolution is really high. I guess the picture shrunk when I dropped it to the proper size limit. I'll see if I can post a few more that appear a little bigger.

I just ordered a bunch of zoa frags from worldwidecorals and they are great. They all opened up nicely and there were more polyps on them than the picture showed (everything at WWC is WYSIWYG). I highly recommend you checking them out.

I would love to hear some feedback on my flow setup...

4) "How is the overall flow and type?" This is something that I've been debating.

I read that the other day I have just not compiled a good answer yet. BUT... off the cuff:

If you take your PH and put them on the flat part, take one and put it 3-6 inches from the water top and point it right.

Take another one and put it 6-8 from the bottom and point it left.

This will cause a dual flow situation. The upper edge will flow counter clock wise and the bottom set will flow clock wise. In the middle will be a, hopefully, turbulent flow area.

You will need to work on seeing how the flow interacts with each other and also the substrate.

Lets see some pictures so we can help plan/adjust the flow.
