Mystery Anenomie

Lately I've been finding new small anenomies in my tank.
They are small about the size of a quarter. They are very flat and almost completely transparent except for white dots on the ends of their tentacles. They are not at all like aiptasia.
Does anyone know if they are a pest or not? Should I be concerned about them? I've never seen them before.

Yeah thats definitely a pest. I am almost certain it is a majano. They sting pretty well. Get it out if you can.

HI, I don't think its a pest. Defiately not a Majano. It really resembles a strwberry anemone. See Sprung and Delbeek, Volume 1.

Judging from the pic, oh course.

Dont be hasty to remove them untill you check out volume 1.

I've had a couple of those in my tank for a while now, they don't seem to move or hurt anything, and reproduce VERY slowly (if at all) Mine just appeared in a shaded area and have never moved from there. I think they are kind of cool, be interested in finding out what they are.

Yes, David8956. Sounds like the same thing. They are only in shaded areas of my tank and so far don't seem to bother anything.

The anemones in question truely appear to be of the sp. corynactis. Try looking up "The Modern Reef Aquarium" Vol. 2 Fossa and Nielsen, page 290. I'm certain this is what you have.

I have the same things in my tank. They are NOT mojenos (which are green under actinics) but I do not know what they are. The pics you posted are the same that I have and they do reproduce (at least in my tank). I have not had any problems with stinging other corals or being aggressive and appear to cohabitate well (again, at least in my tank). They only seem to come out at night/lights off and luminesce with a beautiful blue/green ring around the mouth under actinics.

I have to agree with TOPFINZ. The anemones in the picture definately are NOT majanos. I don't have the book that he cites in his last reply, but after looking up corynactis I have to agree that without a doubt that is what they are. A simple web search for both Majanos and Corynactis thru google image will show you a definite difference between the two, and actually show you almost the same species of corynactis that is present in you pictures.

As for wheter or not corynactis is a pest or not. It is not a pest.
