Mystery Wrasse

Does anybody own them? Can you tell me your experience with them? Mine was out swimming when I first got him. Now he is constantly hiding in the rock work. Is this behavior common?

Had mine for a few months. He is usually swimming in and out of the rockwork, rarely ventures high up in the tank, even waits for the food to drop to him.

Mine usually swims the whole tank but is definitely a bit of a wimp but he shares space with 2 other wrasses and three tangs only 1 of the wrasses giving him "special" attention

They seem more shy than the usual wrasse of the same size. My current one is in a "temporary" home, been there for two months. I put a small Lubbock's wrasse in there and the Lubbock was giving him a hard time after one day!

I'm with the general public on this one as they are somewhat shy and will hide somewhat . this being said ,he will usually become acquainted and come out more and more depending on his tank mates . after they get settled in for a year or two then they sometimes become excessively territorial and defend the whole tank . they can be a PITA at this time and they become very aggressive to the point where they are undesirable at this time IMO . yes they are beautiful and the three that i have had became very aggressive and were sold to people that had fish only aggressive tanks . they all worked out as they were somewhat the last fish introduced into their settings and worked out pretty well . one of the three however never got tamed down and was a holy terror quickly taking over the entire tank aggressively and disrupted a 300gal tank to the point of him having to be removed and then the tank never got settled back to normal . that guy doesn't like me any more but just beware of what will happen in a few years ,

My experience is that they can be a royal pain once established.

thats what i was trying to nicely say Steve and you would also know they usually dont play well with others once established .

Had mine for about two years now and yes he they are wimps. But mine swims through out the whole tank morning until the lights turn off. No problems with him hiding at all.

My guy was passive, but after I tried adding a possum wrasse, he has just gotten more and more aggressive. Fortunatly, other than keeping my assessors holes up, he does not seem to be messing with any of the other fish.

Most wrasse will hide, or stay timid for the first week or two. But once he realized there is no one to boss him around, or eat him; he will stay out all the time.

Agreed with the above. Had mine for over a year and just as all the seasoned aquarists warned me he turned postal one day and started attacking all my fairy wrasses so he had to go. Man he was a beauty though.

Mine like to eat shrimps and hermits crabs. So no more cleaner shrimp and crabs for me.
