I picked up this little guy at Tongs while I were at Reefapoolza. The employee's at Tongs did not know the name of this wrasse, and said they have only had one in stock since they opened (which was quite some time ago). I've found a few that are kind of the same on some of the Live Aquaria but I'm still not to sure.

Coris venusta, endemic to Hawaii, sorry I don't know the common name (I am horrible with common names :) ). Good find.

this is a weird statement considering common names are completely regional and there is no "correct" one.
Oh you are correct, and I'm not a fan of common names exactly for this reason.

However, there's an "ornate wrasse" which can look somewhat similar to the posted photos, Halichoeres ornatissimus.

I was assuming this latter species is what that poster had in mind, but you are correct in that I may be making a false assumption.

Weird?? Common name by definition is the usual, widespread name. Ornate wrasse refers to several other different fish. I have never heard of it referring to this fish so I think Evolved is correct and Ornate wrasse is not the common name for the Coris venusta.

widespread? So since the entire public calls a ocellaris clownfish Nemo, and a blue tang Dory we must be wrong in saying its a ocellaris clown or a blue tang???
:rolleye1:

PAHLEEEEAASE!

This whole right and wrong on common names is rediculous... If I want to call it a Super Nova Wrasse I can call it that... as long as I give it correct scientific nomenclature... its evident in all scientific writing all the time as the scientific community often has different common names than the general public.

Back to the OP :) Great find mate! Now, how about an update on how he's doing in your home aquaria or maybe even a pic or two of the lil SUPER NOVA ELEGANT ORNATE CORIS WRASSE :D :D I do like Fishfirst's name of it though ;) :P

"widespread? So since the entire public calls a ocellaris clownfish Nemo, and a blue tang Dory we must be wrong in saying its a ocellaris clown or a blue tang???"

Dude, your the one who jumped Evolved about supplying the common name not me. Besides everybody knows Dory is a Regal Tang not a Blue Tang. :spin1:

LOL. Spoke too soon and suggested the wrong common name. Flog me. I saw the fish at Tongs and it is gorgeous no matter what the common or proper name is:)
