Set up this weekend with rock and sand from my display tank and a 55 that has been set up in my basement for about a year, will it cycle? My wife says the students hoover around it everyday checking out all the critters on the live rock. They can not wai for coral and fish to be put in it.
*need that this thread is useless without pics smiley here*
I doubt that it will actually "cycle", given that you put established rock and sand in it. My 120g didn't cycle when I did the same. But I'd be willing to wager that you'll still have some of the same new tank syndrome algae that appears. I got some algae here and there on the glass and sand (I used new sand but established rock), as well as a couple patches of cyano when I first set up the 120g. I just kept the flow going and didn't mess with it and it went away fairly quickly. I never had any ammonia spikes or anything like that.
I'm glad to see a class having a tank set up by someone with some knowledge of what they're doing. Triad high school has a 120g tank in their library whose primary color seems to always be brown. They started a club that was supposed to learn about the proper care of marine tanks, and my stepson went to a couple of their meetings, but when he interjected things that he knew they should be doing to help their tank out (like actually changing the light bulbs occasionally, skimming better, having less fish, more flow, testing more, etc), he was soundly hushed and basically made to feel like he wasn't following "their" program of what caring for the tank should be, so he should just be quiet and listen. I'd be willing to help them out and maybe donate frags if I thought they were actually going to care for the tank.
I will try and post pics this weekend, I will be adding more rock tomorrow. My wife was at Triad a while back and told me about the tank, she said it was a brown color with lots of algae. I may try and get some kind of club going for my wife's 4th graders, or maybe anyone that wants in the highland schools. I think it would be good for the kids to really see some of the stuff from the reef live instead of in books and pictures. anyway I'll try some pics this weekend.
Be sure to let me know if you want some corals. I have some GSP's that are a nice, bright green. Also some various zoanthids, perhaps some other stuff...I'll have to dig around in there and see what I have.
Oh, and I have a pretty fast growing acro, if you will have the lights and water quality for it.
That sounds great, some zoas would be cool, I already have some xenia and shromms in there. I will take pics this morning and post, Also adding to of my tank raised clown today.
