Nano skimmer 9002 pump burnt out - under warranty still?

After about a year or so of working amazing, the pump on my Nano skimmer 9002 seems to have burnt out. I took it apart and cleaned it really well and it just doesn't turn back on at all.

Is there a warranty on these pumps at all?

If not what retailer has them for the best price? I want to get this skimmer back up & running, it was doing an amazing job!

Thanks.

It is very rare for these pumps to burn out, the more common scenarios are that the drive unit (impeller) is seized to the metal axle that it should spin on freely or the impeller is broken in such a way that the magnet turns without engaging the impeller blades.

You should be able to remove the black rubber ends of the shaft and pull the shaft out of the impeller and magnet, if it is stuck, this is definitely the issue and you will need to seperate them and soak the pieces in 50/50 vinegar and water to dissolve the built up lime.

If the impeller magnet has a loose grey washer of plastic on the bottom, then the magnet has separated from the plastic that drives the impeller. This is cast as one piece on the magnetic core and the bottom will sometimes shear off if fine sand gets in the pump or calcium has built up in the base of the pump. The impellers are available separately, part 1073.087.

If this is not it, the pump has a 2 year warranty covering defects, but not neglect, abuse or modification. If it failed but was otherwise maintained and not modified we would replace it. You would just need to send it in. Marine Depot, Salty Supply and Premium Aquatics stock these pumps, part 1073.008, you can also order one on Tunze.com.

I took the pump apart as much as I could, didn't see any rubber washers as you mentioned?

I think I have the issue with the plastic piece shearing off from what I can tell, but when I look inside the pump it looks like the piece actually sheared off into the hole and I don't think getting a new propeller would work since there seems to be a piece stuck in the pump that I wouldn't be able to remove?

Would I be able to send this in for warranty?

If so what is the address?

Thank you.

Warranty would be difficult on that, that is actually a 0800.040 pump which we ceased using in 2009 so by manufacture date it would be at a minimum 3.5 years old. Do you have a receipt? The motor has indeed failed as you can see by the bulge and this pump is still available but that is a much older skimmer, by Oct 2009 all 9002's shipped with the 1073.008 pump installed and the pumps are not interchangeable due to differences inside the skimmer to accommodate the pump. I suspect the impeller failed and then their was no cooling water flow so it overheated.

Hmm, no I don't. I bought it online probably 1.5 years ago and honestly don't remember who I bought it from. Just started using it about a year ago.

Would the new 1073.008 pump still work in my skimmer housing?

If you can get the receipt and any online dealer should be able to email you a copy, we would cover it, but we would have to have the receipt. You would have to use 0800.040, the internal baffling is different and the 1073.008 will not fit.

Premium Aquatics stocks them, and we have them in stock as well, you could also order it on Tunze.com.

Ok, I'd prefer to just replace the part to keep the costs down, I really can't afford to buy another skimmer.

But out of curiosity, is the new version of the 9002 any better/different than the one I have that it would be worth upgrading to?

There is virtually no difference, the 0800.040 was a bit more expensive, a bit louder and a bit weaker (about 10 gph less) the difference in final skimmer performance and noise is virtually unnoticeable.

So I bought a new pump a few months ago, installed it & the skimmer just never seemed to work right again. No matter how much I adjusted the blue pressure screw, it would not create enough bubbles to start the skimming again.

Any idea what it could be?

When this skimmer worked I loved it & it was perfect for my 45g cube, so I'm hoping to be able to get this up & running again really soon, the tank has not been looking so good ever since it went down months & months ago.

Thanks.

Have you checked to see if the air line tube is bent? With my 9002 I would drill out the housing where the air line tubing would go through I would drill it just a little larger diameter so the air line travels through much easier so it will not kink. Is there water in the air line tube?

Yes, either a kinked airline or clogged elbow or venturi is going to be the likely culprit.

Not sure really what the problem was, but I took it completely apart & cleaned everything really well & it seems to be frothing up nice today.

I'll tell you I had one HECK of a time feeding the airline tube through the top hole... holy cow. I ended up using a pair of hemostats and was able to just grab enough material to pull it through.

Anyone have any other tricks/secrets for getting that airline back in? (feeding it from the top didn't seem like it would have worked considering how tight the fit really is)

I appreciate the help everyone.

Thanks.

At the factory, they cut the tube at an angle so a tip is present to slide it through, I would be hesitant to drill that hole larger, the tension on the airline is largely what keeps the top lid in place, with a loose fit the top lid will easily fall off.

Yeah I didn't think drilling the hole larger would be good & figured it needed to be really tight. My model must be older as it didn't have a pointed tip, but it seems to be running just fine & skimming like normal.

Thanks again for all of the help!

They only cut a point on the hose for pushing it through, then it is trimmed flat to connect to the elbow.
