Okay... so i'm trying to install the tunze top off device and i hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so confusing!

g'day Ng,

I'd ask Rodger he seems pretty helpful, keen to see how you go with it. I like the Tunze gear and am considering the top off on my next tank.

Hows the new house going, are you still excited or getting impatient for completion?

cheers

Chris

Saturday Night Update!

Today was a long day for us, we had to drive about an hour away to our new house to meet with the people about stuff.. and I didn't get too much sleep... so I'm pretty tired tonight :)

Got the Tunze replacement part for the NanoStream and replaced that tonight. I took both streams out and cleaned them good and placed them back into the tank. Everything seems to be working good.

I found a fuge light at another wal*mart today. At least I hope this one will work. It says daylight 60 15w = 60w 6500K light output 900 lumens.

Any ideas? Only one I could find locally. If I have to order the ones before online I will, but if this works it would be easier.

And just for fun here is a photo of a baby sugar glider that is 5 days "old" O.O.P. (out of pouch). It's a leucistic male =) I've waited a long time for a leu baby!

Thanks! I read your page but I couldn't find the 5100k. I saw that it did much better then the 2700k, that's why i was thinking maybe the 6500k would work good enough. I can't find the one you use.

Here is a photo of the ones I got.

Hey NG , thats the same bulb I use ( in a metal clip on thingy )and it works great. The cheato in the fuge has to be harvested about every 8 days or it grows out of the top of the water.

Hey Chris :)

Thanks. I might have to ask him or clown... i looked at it and i can't figure out how to attach it to my sump. the glass baffles won't work, and the edge of the aquarium seems to thick? I didn't even look at it today. Maybe later.

House is going great thanks! =) We met with the security people on saturday to go over options. It will still be a few more months before they start actually building anything.. so we have quite the wait. But it's been fun for sure :) I'll post some updated photos once anything interesting happens. Still mounds of dirt right now lol.

Awesome, thanks! How long do you keep your lights on?

NG - what kind of problem are you having with the osmolator set up? Does this pic help?

bet she's doin 5 gallon weekly changes... that works wonders on a 75 until all sps and clams. 10 gallon weekly on 120... this calcium alkalinity balance issue from day one is bs. you just don't have enough mag and you are just precipitating it out further by adding ca/alk relax a tank takes at least a year to outrun ca/alk on water changes and top off in a smallish system unless you are adding too manys stoney's and clams anyways. like the approach and i've learned that surprisingly it works. i maintain a 100 gallon system involving sales of clams and sps and if i use "good" salt nothing runs out by next week. 7+ clams and 50+ sps colonies. 10 gallon weekly change. change carbon and phosguard all on thursday after new stock arives. husbandry works wonders!!! we get too smart and try not too change water.

Hi Spleen!

It sorta does, thank you for posting that! I'm trying to figure out how to attach everything lol. I kinda see from your photos.. but i'm sitting here trying to piece it together and i'm stumped. I don't see how it all connects! $#@

Well I think I got most of it figured out, but it looks like my sump height is too tall...it won't reach down to the water level... so I'm going to have to figure something else out. Grrr.

Side note. ASM G3 skimmer users... the foam pad that you slide up and down... do you clean that as well ever, or just the collection cup?

Well I took these photos before I saw your 2nd post ... so I might as well post them. You can double check if this looks like how you installed it or if anybody else is confused.

I only bothered showing how the rails install since the mounts for the optical sensor and the float switch should be pretty obvious. Those mounts should be installed on the rail before installing the rail itself (though you may need to adjust a few times by taking the rail off)

Spleen's guide to installing Tunze rails on a tank/sump

1) picture below shows parts necessary.
tunze01.jpg

2) we start with the backing - these are the parts that will install along the outside wall of the tank/sump to hold the rail in place
tunze02.jpg

and putting them together

tunze03.jpg

3) now we take the rectangular piece that we haven't used yet and the rail
tunze04.jpg

and we fit them together
tunze05.jpg

(to be continued)

4) and we take the small head screw and screw it through the rectangular piece and through the rail
tunze06.jpg

5) we then take the backing piece and screw the large thumb screw through it as below, making sure orientation of the screw is correct
tunze07.jpg

6) and now we put it all together
tunze08.jpg

and using a screwdriver to screw the small head screw through

7) you want to approximate the width of the rim of your tank/sump in between the rail and the backing
tunze11.jpg

8) and now placed on the tank rim. Please ignore the ugly tank - it was what I had available (it's a freshwater tank that holds the plant scraps from my freshwater planted that has gotten mysteriously infested with snails)
tunze13.jpg

9) use a screwdriver to make final adjustments to the width to make sure that the rail is snug against the wall and that the width matches the width of the rim
tunze14.jpg

10) and finally turn the thumbscrew to tighten it all down
tunze15.jpg

11) and final result

Hope that helps somebody! And if it turns out that the rail isn't long enough to get to your water level, you can always install it on the baffle (one option) or you can actually purchase a rail extension kit directly from Tunze (consists of an extra rail and screws/plastic to hold the rails together) ... or you can consider raising the water level in your sump to get it to the sensors.

Spleen

Wow! What an AWESOME update! Thank you! I had not figured that part out yet that you detailed, so that was very helpful! What I had figured out was how to put the sensors on the rail.. but not how to get the rail on the tank.

I will check my baffles and see if that works. I don't think it will bc of the way I have the last baffle... let me go look.

Thanks again that was great =)

Here are some photos of the kit I took when I opened it up. Maybe this would be helpful also for anyone who was curious what came with the kit!
