for starters, happy holidays,

i need some help getting the right flow. here is my newly setup 65g reef. i would like the flexibility to have a mix of lps and sps. ive created different zones for different corals, with my aquascaping. now i just need to match it with the proper flow patterns.

im thinking a pair of 6025s positioned in opposite corners, one high and one low, should be ok.

what do you think?

I am running a 6045 and a 6055, both prototypes from MACNA and my 6055 maxes out at about 1000 gph as it was really a primitive working model. I think I need more flow, I am running these on a 58. In my opinion, 2 6045 would be the minimum.

thanks roger,

my thinking was to get flow dispersed throughout the tank without having any of it be forceful. with the rock the way it is, there isnt a lot of open area of the flow from a single stream to disperse gently. so i thought a few "weaker" pumps would keep the water moving without causing damage to the corals from head-on flow, which is going to be unavoidable.

are the 6025's that "weak"? could 3 placed in strategic positions create a good amount of flow?

due to the arrangement of rocks there isnt more than 6-8" of open water in any direction. i would rather get soft good flow from different starting points combining to create good agitation, rather than 2 powerful pumps hitting the rocks/corals head on since their flow patterns are so wide (18").

thanks

You could use 3, but the flow is gentle and I would want a bit moreI have a toadstool less than a foot away from the 6045 and it is always open and seems happy, it is a small hitch hiker piece about 2" around. The 6045 has better reach and a bit more force but not so much to cause problems.

good to know

wish they were available in a store near me so i could pop my hand in the tank and gauge the flow patterns.

i guess ill hang on till the 45's hit the shelves. then by one of each and supplement with an extra 25 or 45 as the need dictates.

final thought, since ill have to wait for the 45's, do you think a single pulsing 55 would be ok? with maybe a supplemental 25 or 45?

thanks for the help roger

As I said, the 6055 I have was not a final working version, it worked but the electronics had to be toned down to work reliably. I still have not seen the full flow potential of the 6055. It should be about equal to a 6045 and 6025 combined.
