Naso Dying?

I've had a small naso tang for a week now. Every day it has been just fine swimming around making friends with my blue/green chromis. This morning I get up to see it's missing. It was laying behind a rock curved but still alive. Anything at all I can do for it? I'd hate to lose it. I took a pic of it and a short video of it. I moved it to the front so I can keep watch of it and you can see that it's still breathing although it appears it's not normal.

180 gallon tank

Ammonia - 0

Nitrates - 20

Nitrites - 0

PH - 7.8

Temp fluctuates but always around 78-81

1.022 salinity.

Get those nitrates down. Has it eaten anything? Your ph seems low as well. Not a tenuous just pointing out stuff to look at and provide detail on.

I would capture it an treat with eythromyacin. without any external visual problems it could be gill flukes or internal parasites/infection. This would be my best effort treatment. Either way better to remove it if you can., so you do spread whatever it may have.

Your nitrates are fine. ~20 is not bad for fowlr. And although a tad high, harmless. Focus on other things ATM like making sure its eating.

How would I treat it with the ethromyacin? Set up a quarantine tank and move it to that and dose the tank?

As far as eating goes, he wasn't eating a whole lot. I saw him peck occasionally on the seaweed I put in there and if I would put pellets in, he would just pick out the pieces of seaweed that was mixed in with it, never saw him take a pellet and being this is only a 4 month old tank, there's not a lot of algae on the rocks. I'm only now getting my new tank detritus algae phase.

you can treat either in DT or in QT/Ht tank. API is a brand most fish stores will stock. It is the same as humans take. directions for dosing on the packet.

pull any carbon, turn off skimmer. treatment is every day for 7 days. sounds more like he just needs to eat. See if your LFS has any macro algae to feed it and try to get and feed some live brine.

brine is not nutritious but will help gauge his health.

Erythromyacin is an anyibiotic, and I don't see any evidence of a bacterial infection on this fish, but honestly it looks very near death. In the future you should quarantine new arrivals and treat them with copper or CP to eliminate any protozoan infections. If the tang dies, it would be worth doing a freshwater dip on the corpse to see if he had flukes.

ALWAYS ask to see a fish eat before purchasing it. The fish doesn't look emaciated so I wouldn't rule that as a cause of death, but not eating certainly won't help it recover from capture/acclimation or whatever diseases it might have.

It was dead by the time I got back.

It looked fine as far as colors and all go, just wouldn't swim or straighten out.

Definite lesson learned on buying fish. This isn't the first time I have gotten fish but it's a step added when getting them. Make sure they eat.

I took the fish out and it's in a bag with water, what would doing a fresh water dip do?

If the fish was infected with flukes, a freshwater dip would kill them. You would see small transparent or slightly opaque flatworms leave the gills/eyes/skin of the fish. Leaving the fish in a bowl of fresh water for 10 minutes would do it, then inspect the water afterwards with a flashlight.

Improper collection/acclimation are likely causes of death as well.

Don't fw dip, you should be quarantining all your fish to prevent disease outbreaks and make sure they eat and are fit for life in your DT. Especially tangs. FYI don't get a naso again your tank is not large enough and even tho 99.99999% of people say I plan to upgrade buy your fish based on your current size tank, not future one :)

I can't agree on getting another naso because I will be and I think the tank size is good. I have several friends who have these in 180's and a lot heaver stocked and they are just fine.

I'll dip the fish and see if anything comes out of it.

Well you will be finding it a new home one day. Small or not of properly cared for it will be a monster in no time. My buddies is around 14" and looks big for his 600 gal but you obviously are set and don't care about the long term happiness of the fish. Naso should be in 300 min

Reef Central's recommended tank size for tangs is found here.

making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights; overbearingly assuming; insolently proud: an arrogant public official.

Ever make you wonder . . .

You make a lot of claims on and in the name of RC that may or may not have a scientific basis and yet you seem to hold those opinions as fact. I don't disagree with this particular post, but in general I wonder if you have ever looked back at all your posts and done a brief self evaluation. I am not perfect either but I know of several very impressive science type folks that peruse this site whom you have managed to cause to never return.

Just a thought.

And, I tried to send this as a PM but you are apparently blocking PMs.

While Steve's posts do come off blunt at times he means well and really does care about the animals in question. He also takes all the questions that have been asked a hundred times while many of us scroll past them. The longer your here the more you learn to love him and understand his bluntness IMO ( much like water keeper was). I like Steve though and think he does a good service for the forum. Joe I respect you as a reefer but I've seen you post stuff way more arrogant and feel you should take your grumpy attitude elsewhere.
