Naso stopped eating

Hey guys,

So ive had a 4" Blonde Naso for about a month now and hes stopped eating randomly. I hear they sometimes go on a hunger strike and will just stop out of no where and starve themselves so im trying to figure out if there is anything i can do

Im feeding:

Mysis / Brine / Rods in AM
2 Different flake / Pellets in PM
2 Half sheets of either brown, red, green nori every other day (red / green are soaked in garlic)

Any thoughts?

The display is 180g with plenty of swimming room, 3 mp40s on full blast+1200gph koralia, and the return pump so i know there is alot of flow.

Tank inhabitants:

3 Disbar Anthias
Platinum clown
5 Vanderbuilt chromis
Chevron Tang
Midas Blenny
McCosker Wrasse
Green Coris Wrasse
Pair of Panama Red Cardinal fish
2Cleaner Shrimp
Pep shirmp
Urchine
3 Stars

THIS GUY IS STUMPED!

I care for a blond naso that won't eat anything but untreated green nori. There's other foods offered to the tank, but he would eat it.
I'd try placing untreated green nori in the clip and see what he/she does.

Peace
EC

I'm going through the same thing right now. Mine won't eat either. I've tried almost everything. Good luck.

I agree its always a concern when an active eater like a Naso species stops eating. How long has it been since you've seen it eat? How's the body mass of the fish now? Your feeding list appears pretty varied and if the Naso was eating a variety of these foods before and then suddenly stopped, I would continue to watch and keep feeding your tank as usual.

My Naso lituratus was a pretty finicky eater when I first introduced her to the tank. She would only eat Nori and Mysis and ignored all pellets introduced. One day out of the blue about a year in the tank started going for the pellets like a fiend. Body mass was much improved once the fish was feeding on the pellets.

Keep trying and watching. I know this may sound strange, but see if you see any odd stringy, white poop, the fish may have worms. This can also cause them to stop feeding and waste away. This brings the requisite question, did you QT the fish?

Good Luck.

Its been about a month since i got him, no he was not QT as i dont have room for a QT tank for a fish that size. I got him off of DD and he came in in good health. I know they suggest to QT the fish.

Its been about 4 days since ive seen her eat and i can tell she is getting real thin, she was eating mainly mysis, brine, and nori prior to stopping. She didnt touch pellets or flakes. It was wild, she was super fat one day and the next skinny.

Yesterday my cleaner shrimp was cleaning her by her poo hole so maybe your right!

I also have a naso in qt for two weeks and it was eatting frozen brime, mysis and nori like a champ. He was fat as hell and my 10 year old son was like..."We should call him Wilbert" (wilbert the pig). Then last Friday it went cold turkey on me and I stopped eatting anything I put in the tank for about three days. I did a 15 gallon water change out of 30 gallon and it is slowly eatting again two days ago. I go home for lunch and it is eatting like no tommorow. It did have a ick outbreak but is betting it now. I have tangs in qt w/ ink outbreaks but they still eat like crazy....my first time w/ naso so this is interesting to see and read about. They are beautiful fishes so hope yours pull through. Disappointed that he is from DD and acting the way he is....

I'm fairly confident my Achilles came with ich from LiveAquaria. Since I put him in the tank other fish have started getting ich for the first time.

Yup, i think i got ich from them before years back. It happens, its in multiple systems. We are all suppose to QT, but some of us dont have the luxury or space (me included sadly) so we get what we get. Its cure able and i didnt lose anything to it.

Then don't get the fish. I'm about to take all the fish out of my 210. Putting that Achilles right in has been one of my biggest mistakes. Never again.

So im lost, you post this on the thread not putting any constructive comments toward the original post. Then suggest not getting fish because i don't have space for another tank?!?!

Thanks?

I'm sorry for being so blunt. My honest advice, to be taken with a huge grain of salt, is to follow what I'm doing and get that ich out of your tank. Then in the future do it right and not get it in there. If you leave it in there, there's a chance it will kill everything in your tank in time. Fixing it now will be a lot cheaper.

Not to worry bud, its def not ich tho. Ive had ich in prior tanks and with some good feedings and removing the sand bed for whatever reason got rid of it.

Ich is only curable if you proactivley treat for it.

Good feeding and removing the sandbed does not cure ich. It will likely come back.

Maybe a large water change would help, I hope your fish recovers.

Try live blackworms, if you can get them. That was the only thing my Naso was eating. Now it also eats mysis and nori on a clip, but its favorite thing is still the blackworms. Lucky for it I also have a Copperband so the tank gets plenty of worms. Good luck.

I hear Chaeto is bad for tangs, can anyone tell me if this is true or not?

I don't know if its good or bad but my naso started to snack on some chaeto I put in. It's a start, right. She's getting skinny so hopefully she'll start eating soon.
