naso tang question

I have a naso tang in my tank, just recently I have noticed that he has about 3 areas on his face not doing well. they look like open wounds with white spots around it. he still eats no signs of scraching on the rocks.
anyone have any Idea what this could be?
the tank has been running for a few months after i upgraded to the 210. parameters are good, had tang for about 3 weeks, no know problems with parasites.

flake, frozen mysis, and seaweed sheets

Make sure its diet is mostly vegtable based-seaweed sheets,formula 2, emerald entree, etc. Also mine does well with new life spectrum pellets.Nutritional defiency will make their head look like that.

You might want to soak their food in selcon or other vitamin supplement, these guys need to be fed well and fed a lot to stay healthy, add some garlic extract to the food too. the healthier the fish the easier it is for them to fight off infections and keep ich at bay, you might want to invest in a UV sterilizer (IMO) it helps keep the parasite count down.

Yep...looks like HLLE. Head and Lateral Line Erosion. Here are two links that should cover the issue. My experiences with it have shown that vitamin defficiences and (my own personal theory) the lack of metal halide or intense enough lighting are usually causing the sysmptoms. Broccolli and carrots along with Selcon seem to be the best way to deliver the vitamins.

I have a Naso Blonde just like yours. I feed him Yaki Nori which you can pick up at your local asian store. I also feed him Crispers and Pellets. He eats the Nori the most so I feed him plenty of Nori and the Cripers and Pellets are more like treats for him. Naso's require a lot of seaweed so make sure you are feeding him enough of it. I have a total of 7 tangs and they eat about one 12"x12" sheet of Nori per day. Fatten him up and he should recover.

how do you feed this to your fish, is it choped real small or is it attached to a clip?

Chopped frozen carrots dropped straight into the tank (thawed first). With the broccolli I usually clip it to the side. Sometimes the fish will eat it fresh..others prefer it softened in the microwave.
