I have requested this thread be stuck at the top. Lets keep all the frag swap related discussion in this thread.

Wow.. nice frags on fragswapper.com already. !!!! You know what they say - The early fish gets the frag ;)

There are two things (at least!) that we'd love to get club members' help with.

1) Would you like to do a demo? Right now, we are anticipating an acrylic demo (cutting, gluing), and we can always demonstrate fragging techniques. Last swap, Rick Pucciarella did a nice demonstration of making rock plugs. Do you have something you can show off? Let us know.

2) Send me some tank photos! Last swap we set up slideshow with photos of members tanks, fish, and corals. But we didn't have as many photos as we'd like. If you have any shots of your tank, send them to me and we'll do this again.

Scott

Not sure if this is old hat now or not but I could bring a couple maxi-jet (maxi-stream) mods, if someone has a 20longish tank I could put them in to show the power difference from a reg maxi-jet?

Sure, kind of a mini-demo (not a big song and dance, but useful)? I didn't know there was a difference. We'll need to look for a tank, I'm not sure who would have one.

Well, with this mod done to a maxi-jet 900. the original MJ will push around 230gph, with the mod done to it, it will push somewhere between 1100gph and 1500gph depending on what props and how many you use etc. I might have a 20 high under the steps... i'll take a look when it warms up a bit ;)

I have a 20L I can bring to the swap. I may need it for frags if my DIY frag tank with acrylic falls through. LOL But I will be bringing it as a backup!

FYI, we've confirmed a speaker for the swap who will be speaking on the care, fragging, and reproduction of LPS corals. Her name is Kelly Maers, from the Pittsburgh area.

Hey thats cool Rick... I got my 20 high out and cleaned it up... The 20 long would be better but I'll bring the 20 high anyway. got to find something that will kinda float around so you can see the current/flow. If anyone knows of anything that works well for this let me know.. The only thing I can think of is something like glitter maybe. want something a little easier to see though. Going to take a ride up to the party supply place near me and see what they have. I will bring a few copies of the instructions of how to make the mod for people to look through etc.

Hey Critter. If we are going to do a one time demo(only once that day) wouldn't food coloring work? Just one drop would do the trick.

OH, and I loaded my frags on fragswapper this past weekend. I think I posted 13 items and I should be able to post some more before the swap! :)

hey critter,
if your looking for ideas to show flow in a tank try plastic bb gun pellets i think i saw them in use somewhere for something like this kind of demo.

Hey Rick, great idea.. I'l talk to my wife and she what she thinks.. I've never played with that stuff, except when I was a kid making rock gardens. To be honest Rick, this will be my first reefing anything, so I have no idea what to expect. I have know idea how you guys run these, how they are laid out etc... so if you want to give me an idea of how things will go down that would be great.

I like this idea, thanks! I just got my RO/DI unit this week so gonna head out to the stores for some tubing etc... I'll have to check out some places and see if they have something like that... I think I saw the same vid as you.. they were like bright yellow or something. I think it was for that new pump that is mag driven, where the prop is on the inside and the mag motor is on the outside. anyway thanks for the reminder, good one.

The little yellow BB's may be for a kids toy/raygun or something so check out toysRus I am sure that they would have them. If all else fails the food coloring will work.

Does anyone else have any ideas for demos at the swap?

We still have room for more.

yep, all set... I found green plastic bb's at Kmart. Plus got some finer stuff too along the nature of glitter but larger.

Here's a little bit more information on our swap speaker. We're going to have a new, fresh face this time, not like some of our other former speakers who I won't name. ;)

Kelly Maers is a 4-year member of the Pittsburgh Marine Aquarium Society (PMAS). She currently maintains a 55 gallon saltwater reef aquarium which has been set up for 6 years and has been mostly LPS dominated. She is currently taking Oceanography through Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and is pursuing a career in the field of Marine Biology. She has been involved with the Florida Aquarium SCUBA program and is involved in an apprenticeship at the PPG Aquarium studying under various marine biologists and fish pathologists.

Ms. Maers studies coral recovery methods due to infections and injuries. Her presentation will be on Large Polyp Stony (LPS) Corals: Care, Infections, Parasites, and Recovery. This will include proper handling and transport, the important role bacteria play in coral health and bacterial infections, treatment of diseases, parasites that feed on LPS corals, and coral recovery.

Scott, do you think we should start a thread (stickied) on the up coming speaker to inform members and non members who are interested in what is going on for the swap. Maybe it could be an agenda thread for the swap. Just a thought.
