Neal's Barebottom SPS & ZOA System...

Did you run into any problems that were specifically tied to the ceramic tiles? Im thinking about resetting my tank and using your idea for a predominantly zoa and lps tank.

I really want to know way Neal is going to use sand this time around. Did you learn something by running BB that you can share with us?

SAND!!!! aw man just when I thought you beat the sand subject and won. :sad1:

Ya know, I gave it a shot, and I jus don't like it lol, at least not in higher light and when I like more flow... So I removed it ;)

I learned that I love it, lol... And that sand cramps my style...

So you back to bb very nice ;) I personally can't get away from it either. Look forward to your progression. What are you doing for a sump this time around, and do you plan on just running carbon again?

Wow, good timing guys. Lmao. Just so happens the last few days I made a thread in my local forum that highlights and walks through my entire hobby experience. I have a life, just been home sick on my weekend, lol. It explains what happened to me and my experiences the last year or so since I've done any updates here. It's very in depth and a long, but great read. If your interested, jump to post number 45 or so, and it picks up with where I am at currently in the hobby. I have setup a new tank with an all new look and feel, and I am back to using the tiles for my aquascaping. It is not my end goal, and it is simply something to get me rolling again, but give me that unique look I've always strived for. Aside from what you will see there, I have a table setup in a spare room where I am working on building an under water tile made temple, which once I find the proper tank to present it, and I've gotten my courage back, I will move onto, and set up and show off something truly unique, and never seen before in this hobby to the best of my knowledge. I am on the lookout for a used 93, or 150g cube. I'm not ready for it either way right now, as I'm not quite ready, nor do I quite have the money at the moment. If you do check it out, please keep in mind my current tank does my vision and project I'm working on out of water right now, no justice. So you will have to be patient with me ;)

Again, if you don't feel like reading the book I wrote, just jump to post 45 or so, and pick up from there. I've worked really hard on it the last 2 days.

So please feel free, follow the link and check it out. I will start posting here again, in this thread, but until I get more sps and they start growing, I will respect this forum, and not cloud it with my less than sps par display at this time ;)

Wow very intense and major props Pallobi! Since this thread still has a ton a great discussion can you discuss your thoughts on BB versus sand bed for us?

I loved barebottom, but I really think for the look and feel I wana go for, and my idea of an underwater temple, that the use of sand, reef aragonite in my case, that it is vital to the look and presentation. A lot of people have nice sps reefs with shallow sand beds, so I am hoping to acheive the same.

Just to further explain why I do what do with the tiles and aquascape, I have always had a intense fascination and fixation on the idea of a lost city of Atlantis. As well as a fascination and love for the architecture of places like Ancient Rome. Combine that with my obsession for this hobby, and love and fascination of marine life and reefs, as well as my childhood love of Legos (yes, I said Legos, lmao), well, this just seems right for me. So this is the approach I am taking from here on out. The simplicity and clean look of the tiles columns and bases I used in the past are nice, but I'm gonna start takin that to a whole new level of creativity and design.

Many will roll their eyes. And many will hate it cuz it's different, but in time, and as things grow in and establish as I get my real display up and going in the future, I really feel like fellow reefers will begin to look past that, and appreciate what I'm trying to do, and hopefully going to acheive. It's just gonna take time ;)

+1 , i hear you ;-) Personally i love the look, unknowingly I've done something similar in the past with ceramic tiles and loved it.

There needs to be more out of the box thinking when it comes to aquascaping, yours past tanks and also newest are a perfect example.

Would you care to share where you are purchasing your tiles? Wondering if these are just home depot type of goods or you have found another source.

Subscribed to you newest thread, thanks and keep up the passion!

Home Depot is actually the place. And the only place I have found them. They are all natural, tumbled rock tiles. No coating or treatments to them whatsoever. Other large home improvement places like lowes for example, all carry tiles obviously, but none them carry this type. They all have some sort of coating or something to them that I don't want. Plus these, when they become aged in the water, really just take and color up and everything, just as the live rock everyone uses. It really is perfect for this. I also use standard BRS reef glue gel for the adhesive as it seems to work best and hold strongest. They also have a great, natural texture.

Very cool, believe I've seen it there just didn't know. There are tinny ones attached to a fiberglass mate but those i believe are smaller. BSI gel glue is very good, not sure if this is what your are referring to. Thanks again, will be following along with your adventure.

Best,
Brad

BRS, bulk reef supply, extra thick reef glue.

I'm sure there are others that are the same, that's just the one I use and is readily available.

And I appreciate the interest and compliments greatly. Glad you guys bumped me up, gets me back in the action ;)

Cheers guys!!

Oh, and by the way, if anyone does check out my thread link, I know the 40g breeder tank sucks, especially for this, and that the stand pipes are dam ugly, lol. It's just the only tank I had available to me for now as I need to be a little frugal until a real good deal comes along. Gotta have priorities at least a little, right? ;)
