Neal's Barebottom SPS & ZOA System...

What mode and intensity do you run the vortechs at?

for the most part, about 80% of the time, i run them in tidal swell mode... the other 20% of the time, which is usually for a few hours in the afternoon when i am around and can think of it, i run them at constant speed... my vortechs are always pegged at 100% power (intensity)... of course in tidal sweel mode, the do their own thing and power up and down, alternating and ranging between 50% to 100%, but that is how that mode runs...

with the barebottom and lack of large objects (rockwork) in the way, i get some serious flow in my display... which is how i like it to be, and my corals love it... especially my milli's...

jus to add, i noticed you quoted the first FTS's from this thread from a little over 2 months ago... i have removed quite a bit of things since to reduce my numbers of my collection... its crazy that i look a little closer at those pics and see how much growth i have gotten in jus that time... nothing too crazy to talk about, but i can notice the difference... makes me smile :) lol

recent upgrade purchase and plans for upgrade...

recent upgrade purchase and plans for upgrade...

hey guys, jus wanted to share... this past week i obtained an 180g AGA RR tank with corner overflows which is in absolutely great shape & custom made tube steel stand w/ leveling feet... also received with the deal about 200 lbs+ of nice large reef rocks and (3) 100g rubbermaid feed stock tanks and (3) PFO 400 watt ballasts, well one single and one dual... as well as some other goodies as well... what i really like about the stand is that it has plenty of room under it and is ectra wide at about 32" and is 36" tall...

so of course, this means an upgrade in the near future, hopefully by the end of the summer if i am lucky :) and here are some thoughts on that...

the components i have figured out at this time will be...

*180g AGA RR corner overflow tank (barebottom)
*custom tube steel stand
*120g standard 4x2x2' live rock refugium (large peices only, about 8-10 pcs, gravity fed, barebottom, will be drilled for drain and fed by 1 overflow)
*mag drive 24 to feed both returns to main tank and possibly feed dual BRS reactor as well
*3 vortec mp40esW's, still need to purchase 1 more (to be located on each end of display, and upper center on back wall back)
*2 koralia magnum 6's,.. still need to purchase 1 more (both for refugium/live rock flow)
*(2) american DJ power strips

couple more things i am not sure about at this time but are considering...

*2' x 2' x 18" tall sump, most likely to have custom made, this size is jus an estimate as both the sump and 120g refugium to be will be under the display stand... (will hold skimmer, heaters, return pump, gravity fed auto top off)

the lighting i am not sure about as of yet either... i may use the (3) 400 watt pfo ballasts and get some high quality reflectors and use radium 20ks, or i may stick with t5's and upgrade to a 60", 10 bulb fixture... it will be either one of these choices... most likely the t5 choice as it stands now...

also, i will not be using any of the rubbermaid stock feed tanks for this upgrade, but one will be used to cook all the new rock i got with this package deal, another is going to a local reefer who is in need of it...

and i may use a another small mag drive pump to supply the reactors if i dont tee it off one of the returns...

*********************

as with my current setup, it will be kept simple with all barebottom througout, high flow. and powerful skimming.. i will most likely do (4) mp40s rather jus (3) as well... i will also feature the same look i have now as all the live rock will be in the fuge and the display will be a wide open showcase, well once i add more corals and it actually grows in lol, but you get the idea... :)

i figure to have 4 rows from front to back... the back row will have large colonies and i figure i will easily be able to fit 8, perhaps 9 colonies in the back row and between the overflows... in the 3rd row, i should be able to fit another 12 to 14 good size smaller colonies front left to right, depending on their size and leaving them with plenty of room to grow... the second row back will have most likely somewhere in the ballpark of 15 or 16 smaller colonies/large frags with plenty of room to grow... and the front row will have frags that are coming in nicely, small in size, and dont need as much room... i am figuring with 70" of inner tank width, i should be able to easily fit 18 or so in the row up front... again, all corals will be presented in the same fashion they are now, but with much more room and much more room for a few more fish and the room for them to swim freely amongst my coral pillars :)

jus some notes, and i wanted to share my new score and plans for it

Looking great  Do the corals ever get knocked off the tiles?

Actually no, not at all... as I have gone along with building these columns, I have found some adhesives work better than others... as well as the higher the columns get, the more weight and stress is put upon the structure, particulary when moving them around, so I have to be careful with them... and again, i have learned what adhesives work better than others... but the corals themselves don't fall or come off, especially once their base has been established over at least the top tile...

The column material may change down the road... I am not sure these particular tiles are best, or if I will always use tiles for these structures... I am entertaining the use of other materials as far as functionality and look... but at this point in time, I have not found anything that really makes me wana change over, but again, I am entertaining a few ideas...

The color on your corals is amazing. Kudos

thanks! :)

i actually take all my photos with my phone camera, so they really do look much better in person... or if someday i can get a nice digital SLR, then they will look better in photos ;)

Wow, this is a very unique display. As an artist, the first thing I thought of was a gallery show. It looks like your corals are very happy and doing well. I have to go back and read this thread. Well done!!

thank you :) really...

the display "gallery/showcase" is one of the things i was going for ;)

Jus wanted to note...

I lost my 6 line wrasse a few weeks back... and I replaced him today... always good to have one of these in with your sps imo :) jus sayin...
I totally agree, great fish to have in a sps tank. They eat flatworms. I had one for a while then jumped out and went carpet surfing. I replaced it an 2 weeks later I found it in my skimmer pump dead. My clowns are to dam mean, need a bigger tank.

jus need to lose the clowns LoL... they can be the meanest little buggers for sure... i like the wrasse better ;)

Yes .. U do have a different approach .
I would say "trophy coral showcase " .. with that artsy appeal mentioned in a earlier post
I like the clean build ...
U have quite a nice collection going on in there ..
How often do you change the t5 bulbs ?
Since you do not like macro . Have u ever thought of creating a cryptic zone with sponges ?

Have a great day
P
