Neal's Barebottom SPS & ZOA System...

Mounted some more peices, and organized things a bit... made the zoas easier to view as well as they were getting all over the place...

and this was a thought about a way to allow my chalices to grow comfortably, as well as keep them low in the tank, and out of the blast of the vortechs... first day they seem fine down on the bottom... i am thinking of making a custom acrylic box that measures 4" wide, by 12" long and 1.25" deep, w/ about a half inch of sand for them to rest on and grow out across... the bottom of the plugs are cut of so its jus the flat base top of the plug w/ pretty much whatever didnt come of clean of the plug shaft to anchor them in the sand... this is jus a crappy model of that, but the idea is the same... i think it could work out well when i get a couple more, they start to grow, and i move to a bigger footprint tank... which will hopefully be soon

the small paly on the tile jus to the left of the chalices is a small captain america paly that has some growing and establishing to do, so sorry, kinda looks pathetic lol...

i mounted the green digi, monti setosa, ora pearlberry, ora green birdsnest, and the ora rose milli... i didnt feel any of the others on the frag rack were ready... i look for them to be colored up, established/encrusted, and overall jus on there way

and i recently picked up some new gear ;)

an AGA 180g Reef Ready w/ corner overflows, custom tube steel stand, (2) dual 400 watt PFO ballasts along with a single, a 60" (3) 400 watt bulb PFO pendant, (2) 100g rubbermaid stock tanks, a used 120g standard tank, and some nice dry fiji rock...

all together, it cost me jus over $350 ;) what a deal!!!

the 180 needs to be cleaned, but is in incredibly great shape :D

i know the 120g and the PFO pendant, and the 2 rubbermaid stock tanks will NOT be used on my next setup... and obviously i wont need to utilize all 5 halide ballasts, i will most likely only need 1 dual and 1 single and i will save the other dual as a backup...

Ok, what are you plans for the 180?

well, i am back and forth on a few ideas, and this upgrade will not take place until the fall, or maybe even sometime around the holidays, we will have to see how it all goes... i still have some equipment to get... but here is my thoughts in a quick nutshell... i will have a display reef tank which will be the 180 (yes people, an actual reef tank lol), and a coral grow out tank, which i still need to get, or have made... they will share a common skimmer sump... and please note, the lighting for the 180, i am very much undecided on that... also, some of this gear i already have, so i will continue to collect good deals i come across to fill out the rest of what i need as i go along until the upgrade actually takes place ;)

REEF...

* 180g tank (barebottom) 6' x 2' x 2'
* (3) 400 watt halides and ballasts with high quality single bulb reflectors, OR, a 60" (10) bulb ATI t5 powermodule
* (2) mp60esW's, or (3) mp40esW's
* mag drive 12 return pump

CORAL GROW OUT...

* custom breeder to grow corals, 60" x 24" x 18" high (approx. 110 gallons)
* 48" (8) bulb t5 teklight fixture
* (3) mp40esW's, maybe only (2)
* mag drive 9.5 return pump

I will most likely get a 65g breeder tank to use as the common sump if it is put under the 180, if not, i will use the 120g standard i have now and set it out in the open between the display and grow out tank, for very easy access and open top to it... i dont like haveing my sump under my display currently... i will most likely add another good skimmer to go with the one i have now, to give it more skimming power... and i will add one more reactor to the dual setup of reactors i have now...

again, these are jus some of the thoughts i am throwing around at this time... and are definately subject to change...

nice looking tank you got there.......have you thought about changing the looks of the tiles a bit, maybe do some spirals with them that would look really cool. How about adding a little bit of rock so that it doesn't look just like a frag tank. I really like the tiles idea I might have to experiment with them myself.

i have given the columns many thoughts over... about how to stack them, from what else i can use, and how high i want them... the summer goal is to get a large breeder style tank so they dont have to be so high and can be more spread out... however my space and options are limited in a 75g as its not the most practical tank for this type of setup, for now, i jus have to make due... i have to be careful how i stack them (glued) as i dont wana sacrifice stability, which at this point, they are very stable...

i really dont feel it looks like a frag tank, as the corals arent frags or being fragged at all... well, the recently added peices are still small and frags, but im not gonna be fragging for a very long time... i did one fragging session once, but i regret it as i dont think any, even the larger colonies are ready for fragging... i jus wana let them keep growing out... another reason i need to relocate to a larger tank soon, as i dont want them to be cramped whatsoever, and i want them to all be able to grow out freely in all directions...

i keep rock in my attached 65 gallon "fuge"... as i feel live rock is crucial to the stability of my system, however having it in my display will sacrifice the look and presentation i am going for...

alot of people unfortunately cant get their eyes off the tiles and the unconventional approach to appreciate the love for the corals i have, and my attempt to express their individual beauty amongst all else... my attempt is to be different, and i will continue to "stick to my guns" lol...

:beer:

Until you get a bigger footprint, what if you attached some of the small ones on the side and back of the wall high up, like a shelf? I think it would really go with the aesthetics of what you have going on now, which I like.

IMO, if people could get their eyes off the tiles, then they would not be realizing the true individuality of this tank. The most interesting art has the most critical response.

So this is what u have been up to ? LOL . I keep seeing deals on tanks but I pass them up due to space constraints . I am sure I could store stuff in a friends workshop .I am just undecided on the tank size . I would like 4 x 3 x 22 high ...(gotta be a custom job )
U did say the 180 will be a display tank (right ) .
A buddy is playing with oyster shell , portland cement with rock salt in a kiddie pool with play sand for the molds .
He is setting his 250 DD back up .I would do a 250 dd in a year or so but since I took a bath in his tank a few times with coral and rock placement ,I think I'll pass on the tall tanks .
Since u got such a good deal on this stuff .. where are the new coral additions ????

Very nice aquarium, I enjoyed it tremendously. How is the access to the sump in your most recent acquisition? Seems like there is very little headspace.
