Neal's Barebottom SPS & ZOA System...

lol didnt expect this! Pretty cool and very different. Your corals looks exceptionally healthy, good job!

lol, thank you! and most dont expect it, or even know what to make of it... most find it very hard to get past the fact that i am different, and cant get past that i dont have the typical reef tank most are used to seeing... or even take their eyes off the columns to realize I have done well in my first year of sps keeping, by actually looking at the corals...

I have a vision, and i am going to follow it through, until it becomes a reality... this, is jus the beginning ;)

Wow....different and awesome.

Im sure you have answered this before but I went looking and couldnt find it (too busy skimming for pictures maybe)...but how much live rock would you say you have in the system. Any bacteria diven product like bio pellets or zeo. Also I dont see any fish in your FTS....what fish do you have in this system?

first off, thank you Darryl... for the compliments

I have 3 large peices of live rock in my 65g RR barebottom "fuge", which is plumbed in, can be seen on the previous page of this thread... the live rock, imo, is a huge and very important part of my system, and its stability... i would never go without it...

i do not use any sort of bacteria driven or carbon dosing system whatsoever, and refuse to do so... my systems approach, pretty much breaks down as follows, and is very "simple"... as if there is such a thing as "simple" in this hobby lol...

*stong, oversized skimming
*properly utilized acitvated carbon
*live rock
*NO SAND AT ALL
*very high flow throughout entire system, especially the display, including sump
*alot of gas exchange and oxygenation
*4.5 gallon water change every other day, religiously
*absolutely no overstocking of fish, and allowing the corals to have their space to grow out in all directions
*daily BRS two part dosing, done by hand only...
*no gizmos, no gadgets, no calcium reactors, or anything to help make me be lazy in my husbandry or system keeping methods... all hands on, all the time...

as far as fish, yes i have 5 right now... my display has a beautiful Purple Tang, and 6line wrasse... my "fuge" has a coral beauty angel, and a captive bred pair of Bangaii Cardinals... I plan on adding 2 yellow tailed blue damsels to the display, as well as 2 blue tuxedo urchins, porcelian crabs (which i have 8 of in my fuge) and some fire shrimp...

as always, i will say, that a 75g is not the right tank for this approach and presentation, but sometimes ya have to make due with what ya got... the 180g i have in wait, sitting in the garage, will be much more suiting when the time comes, which will be sometime around christmas, that i will set it up...

here is an actual pic of my purple tang... he is pain to get a good pic of... he is very very aggresive towards both my 6 liine, and myself... if i put my hand in the tank, he usually gets right after me, and has cut me quite a few times... but i love him, and he is staying regardless lol...

when i got him, he was in absolutely horrible shape.. mal nourished, skinny, faded, head rot and lateral line disesase like you wouldnt believe... its amazing what proper oxygen levels and nutrition will do for a fish... too bad many do not understand that...

I have had him since the end of March of this year...

Beautiful corals! I am enjoying following thier growth and your system's development. Please keep the thread going. Your set up and practices area great example. I believe in the idea of simple set up and strict hands on husbandry.
More pics please and keep us posted with any new practice implemented and it's results.

Thanks

kevin

Wow looks like "Coral Museum" Display.
Very different set up.
So ur putting ur corals on a pedestal :) We all do that in our hearts but uv made it a reality!!

Happy Reefing!!

Got quite a few other new pics as well... and some new additions to be noted, as well as removed a couple things... but to start, here is a FTS real quick...

I really wish I could get good pics of the color with my phone camera... they are incredibly better in person...

my new purple hornets... there are 6 healthy polyps i got jus two days ago, so they are still getting comfy and opening up... an absolutely wonderful frag, all healthy and attached to a small peice of tile, which i glued down to a tile, so they can open up, acclimate to my lighting and flow, and do there thing... the last 6 months, once zoas have gotten to about 6 to 10 polyps, they have all started to grow like mad... this makes me very happy... I am hoping these follow suite of my red hornets, which contrary to popular belief, are growing quickly...

these purple hornets, are gonna look absolutely fantastic in my system, i can feel it in me bones lol ;)

Here is my ATL limeade as of tonite, followed by my strawberry shortcake that I got at the same time, from the same vendor...

the pics here do not show the color well at all... all my corals are extremely well colored, except my green milli, which is more of a brown green, but whatever lol, cant have it all lol...

As far as what else I recently added...

this weekend i also picked up more zoas to go with the awesome purple hornets i got...

1 Utter Chaos
4+ Fruit Loops
2 Purple People Eaters

as well as another Pearlberry to replace the one I had to toss this summer... it doesnt have the color yet, but its an incredible 2" x 2" encrusted small colony... so there will be no encrusting/healing, jus growing and coloring up ;) I'm not gonna complain about the more brown color it has, as it was a freebie from a good buddy of mine from BRS... with some time and some TLC, im positive its jus a matter of time before it takes its proper look and color... again, im jus very happy with its size, and shape, and that is already established...

you can see the pearlberry in the back row of this pic, the larger peice in the middle... the two in from of it are a lokani, and the icefire i mentioned a few posts back... and the one to the right of the pearlberry, is actually a 500 efflo, which started out as a horribly done frag, which was nothing more than a 3/8" nub... so its got a LONG way to go... but its mine, and im determined to grow it out and not give up on it, even if it takes a year to look like anything lol...

<a href="http://s906.photobucket.com/albums/ac268/Pallobi11/System%20September%202011/?action=view&current=IMAG1405.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac268/Pallobi11/System%20September%202011/IMAG1405.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and some of my zoas in the "nursery" zoa rack...

<a href="http://s906.photobucket.com/albums/ac268/Pallobi11/System%20September%202011/?action=view&current=IMAG1407.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac268/Pallobi11/System%20September%202011/IMAG1407.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and a couple more closeups of my sps frag rack...

Looking good Neal as always. I think I am finally getting there with my tank.

thanks bro... i think i have said this before, but ive been following your thread also... i definately think yours is coming along quite nicely ;)

You are obviously a very interesting and opinionated individual with a cast iron attitude towards your own "way". I like that! I can say without doubt, you have one of the heathiest systems around whether your presentation is distracting or not, your corals speak for themselves! I enjoy it, you enjoy it, your corals and fish enjoy it and in the end thats what matters. Anxiously awaiting your system upgrade!

thank you, those words are very cool of you to say... though i wouldnt say im all that interesting of an individual, lol, and yes, opinionated, but open minded more than most... jus not with my system lol...

my goal is to have a great "show tank" of corals, and present them like "museum display" or "trophies" in a case... and to keep the focal point on each and every individual coral... be it zoa, or sps...

however, this is not my only goal... my other goal is to prove to everyone, that you dont need to have all the "bells and whistles" to acheive a nice system... don't get me wrong, i try to use quality and proven components, such as vortechs, and a good skimmer, and quality bulbs... but i dont feel that if done properly, and not over eagerly as in overstocking for example, that the use of contollers, carbon/bacterial dosing etc, calcium reactors, or even the use of GFO, is necessary... I really wish i had a good camera, as all of my pics are taken with my cell phone (yes, every last one), becuz the colors in person a soooo much better and vibrant and defined... the pics do them no justice whatsoever...

I mean, some people love all their "bells and whistles" and that is cool, cuz its what one likes about the hobby and how they choose to approach it, and thats awesome... but i jus get sick of everyone saying you "need this" or you "need that"... its total BS, and i am here to prove it...

granted, i'm only in a 75g right now, and only have 18 peices on the columns as far as sps go, but its all i have room for, and f course, im only a little over a year into this, and have many colonies that need to grow out much more before they look more desirable, and my vision starts to take shape... I know for a fact alot of people dismiss my approach and my system, but once the display is three times the size, and the corals are 3 times as many, and all grown to a good size, well, then they will see and they will have no choice but to recognize my efforts, and my simplistic and proven approach...

granted, this is all if i shoud be so lucky as to not have any mishaps or lose a bunch of corals to pests or disease... but for now, i am doing what i can, I am diligent about my husbandry, and i try to keep it as fail safe as i can...

Hopefully, i can keep it all going and my vision will become a reality... but lets face it, luck has everything to do with it as much as any other aspect of it all... again, should i be fortunate enough...

First, very nice setup. I hate when corals grow into each other or into the glass. You will definately not have this problem.

I notice you dose your BRS 2 part by hand. I would say look into getting two of the BRS doser pumps. They distribute only 1.1ml per minute. In your tank if you are using say 40ml a day this would be 36 minutes of the pumps running. You can than further dillute with some ro water. Say 3:1 and the pumps would require 108 minutes a day. You set up timers or a controller to distribute the dosings throughout the entire day offsetting the alk and calc so you do not have precipitate issues. If you are worried about overdosing you could keep only 1-2 days worth of mix in the resovoirs and add it as needed. Your levels would always be spot on. Just a recomendation. I use this strategy myself, and have experienced positive results.

Either way, awesome corals.

i definately appreciate the advice... this is the one and only reason i would consider using a calcium reactor or dosing pumps... however, i did get some BRS dosing pumps earlier in the year, and decided to no longer use them as i was worried about a malfunciton with the timer and over dose something, especially alkalinity... my one and only concern with my system now, is the 1 point to 1.5 point alk swing when i do dose... i normally try to dose half in the morning and the other half in the evening, as i believe this helps the sudden swing issue...

but again, your idea with keeping the resorvior at a minimum, is a great idea that would alleviate my worries in that respect... however, it would also "un-simplify" things a little bit more... this calcium and alk thing, is the ONLY thing that i am at a cross roads with in my system...and i will admit, as i go along and my corals get bogger and more populated, this is one aspect i am going to have to address...

I've enjoyed this thread and your display. It's impressive that you are only a year into growing SPS. Everything looks so healthy. I'm new to SPS corals as well, and the growth and color you are achieving in your first year is definitely motivation. I'm about 6 months into it and I'm finally seeing my frags starting to grow some and color up. feels good! Keep up the good work, and I'll be checking for when you decide to transfer to your larger system.
