Need 1" Sched 80 Threaded Bulkhead

Persistant Perspective
Looking for a 1" Sched 80 Threaded Bulkhead (both sides). Will trade for a 1" slip or (2). $ talks as well. Somewhere close to Palo Alto would be nice.

I have a bunch of double threaded 1" bulkheads, but not sure if they're sched 80. they're black. I'm in need of slip bulkheads, I have no idea why I got double threaded =( THey're brand new, never been installed. Let me know =) I"m driving down to San Jose tomorrow.

Schedule 80 are the thick grey ones. I don't want the cheap black ones, thx.

Why do you need SCH80? SCH80 pipes are especially made for high pressure application. Not really neccessary in our tanks.

maybe he just feels safer, or wants something grey, or all his other plumbing is sched 80?

I don't think our pressure ratings ever get close to pushing the limits of sched 40?

anywho, sure he has his reasons =P

When you have been keeping tanks for as long as I have, and you break a cheap bulkhead on the back of your tank, you will spend the extra money on a tough bulkhead. Nothing like a few hundred gallons of water on your nice floor.

Thx for the offer, I traded mine at the plumbing store.

I've seen 3 of the black bulkheads break when the company that built my tank was setting up the plumbing. They are cheap! I don't think they are even schedule 40 and the quality looks like they may have been made in China. Schedule 80 still seems like overkill to me though. Schedule 40 should be more than enough IMO.

I actually broke 2 sched 40s as well. That insident resulted in me replacing the carpet and padding in a bedroom the first time and 6 hours of stress the second time. The sched 40 are strong enough, but you can end up putting some lateral preasure on them resulting on an internal moment they where not designed for. My first leaks was from me turning on and off a ball valve for water changes. After a while a ballvalve is tough to turn. Every time I turned the valve, it would tug a bit on the plumbing. Eventually this caused the bulkhead to crack as it doesn't allow movement. As a result, my 350 gal refugium and half my display tanks water ended up on the floor while I was away. The second time, I had a small leak on the bulkhead. Maybe a 1/2 cup a day. Gave the thing a slight turn to fix it which ended up in a steady leak. Spent the next 6 hours fixing that.

I like the sched 80 as they are gray and they are strong enough that I can typically reuse them a few times. You can also install them backwards without a problem or install a ball valve right on them and not worry about cracking them.

If you have a small tank then a cheap bulkhead is fine, but in my case if this part failed, I could have about 250 gal of water on the floor and a few thousand dollard worth of dead animals. Lets just call it an insurance policy.

that's good to know. I may switch out all my bulkheads for sched 80. what plumbing store did you find them?

thanks for the insight on the schedule 80! i don't see schedule 80 stuff available at HD or Lowe's, where a good place to get these?

i notice that all the german skimmer companies use schedule 80 plumbing parts & fittings.

Yah, you need bigger holes as they are bigger.. duh.

I try to buy them from Savko if I have time as they are cheap there, but their shipping is slow slow slow. You can buy them local to my house at a plumbing supply house on San Antonio and California. That is Mountain View I believe. I don't kow the actual name or phone number though, but they have them in stock everytime I need them. It is right next to Sears. It is funny, every time I buy one the guy says "Fishtank?."

The bulkheads?? I think they are $25 there. Expensive. I have some other 1" T*S and 1.5" T*S I think if anyone needs some.

Hi Qwiv, I've got a used Sch 80 1", threaded on the pipe side, but slip on the "tank" side. Gasket on this sucker is about 1/8" thick. This one is gray, and stamped "Hayward" with an H logo.

I'm in Vallejo, though. Will consider a trade for an interesting frag. I may have paid over $20 for this many moons ago. Been sitting in my plumbing crate for ~3 years.
Jim

Thanks mate, but that is the ones I have already and I also got my bulkhead situation taken care of.
