These may be stupid questions, but I'm new to reef tank and just got 200 lbs. of LR with all these corals on the rock from another reefer...
I just want clarification as to what each one is exactly so I know for sure. Please identify the full names of each if you can. thanks!

Here's my 75g tank to start.

Coral #1
Not sure what these are. the top left ones you can see white tentacle things come out. I moved these to mid height and they seem to open more.

Coral #2
I'm gathering these are just zooanthids? You can see there's a few flower type polyp's in the middle of these that don't look like the same...
what are those as well? are they the same thing? all the other ones have never opened up yet if they are the same

Coral #3
Are these just zooanthids as well? they are different from #2 and seem to have a little flower shape to them.

Coral #4
more zooanthids that are starting to grow? just the red circled area

Coral #5
This is from pic #4 on the top... (I know what Xenia's are. I'm talking green things) These are growing more and more each day I think, or at least more are coming out.
They are flourescent green and a beautiful color as they glow. they look like tiny polyps... anybody know the name of them? are they good or bad?

Coral #6
My favorite rock in tank. It's from #4 on the bottom. Looks like there's 3 different things on this rock maybe. I colored the 3 different ones on the 2nd image.

sorry DJ88... These thread categories are so confusing. I figured it should go in a thread labeled "The Coral Forum"... since the description of that says "A forum where you can ask questions about corals:" but I guess not. oops

either way... let's see who can step up and play "Name that Coral"

1 is caulastrea
5 is green star polyps

All the things you think are zoanthids are. Those look like anemones in the soanthis colonies... may or may not be pests. The anemones might spread fast but they dont seem to be damaging the zoas so I'm thinking they cant be that bad.

for #1 the Caulastrea... what class are those considered? soft coral, lps, anenome, etc?

is there a specific name this one is? should it be located at top of tank or is mid section good?
one site says
" Common Names for Caulastrea

# Trumpet Coral, Torch Coral, Candy Cane Coral, Candy Coral, Bullseye Coral, Cat's Eye Coral.

in #6 you can see some green with a red dot at the very tip of each one... that must be something specific as well? any idea what type of anenome's the others might be?

your water looks really clowdy :( do some more reading

ya, some of these pics were taken right after I stirred up my southdown sand I put in 4 days before the LR/corals... plus my camera sucks and I'm going to buy a new one this week cuz of it. the water now is perfect clarity though, my camera just doesn't do justice

I wonder if I put my camera in medium light with high water flow if it'll work better:smokin:

can you tell me what the blue circles are in #6?? I'm seeing more and more of those pop up on various rocks and I just want to make sure they aren't bad... they are green with a red point at the tip of each flower piece. very distinguishable from the rest

They look like tulip anemones. Not really pests because they do not reproduce so fast. The yellow circles look like A.mojano, which are pests like aiptasia. As you can see they are all stinging your zoos.

Just my advice, and I'm not saying this in a negative way or anything, but I think the best thing you could do next is pick up the book "Aquarium Corals" by Eric Borneman.
It has more than enough information on all of these corals, with some great pictures for identification too. Yes, you can get a lot of info on the internet too, but you don't always know how accurate it is. Also, when somebody says medium flow and medium light, you don't exactly know what they mean. Not that they are wrong, just that the same terms could mean two different things to different people.
IMO, that book is one of the best investments I ever made for my aquarium. It will give you a great understanding of corals and their requirements.

Agree. I bought his book since I am new too. I use it all the time. Great reference!

I would move the caulastrea higher up. They prefer medium to high lighting and medium flow.

already done.... look at the comments above that image... I moved it to middle section of tank instead of the very bottom like the image. thanks for notice though... i'll def. keep it up there knowing this though

1. Common name is Green Candy Cane - LPS, extremely common, very hardy, likes meaty foods
5. Green Star Polyps (GSP) - Rapid grower, extremely common, very hardy
