need a recommendation on a pump

The Rio 400 pump I have set up in my 24 gallon nanocube sounds like an electric train set and pushes about 2 gallons of water an hour. Because I cannot sleep right now as the noise from the pump is keeping me up, I've decided to take drastic measures and ask for guidance on BAR. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be ideal for my tank and not noisy? Any recommendations would be great since I want to be able to sleep in my bed tonight and not on the couch.

Is it just a powerhead to push water around or is this attached to another piece of equipment e.g. protein skimmer or something else?

I would suggest a Maxi-Jet.

i've never had any issues with rios (other than the suction cups going bad after a few years or so). i just do the regular maintenence on them, too. take them out of the tank and scrub them and run them in ultra hot water for a half hour or so. keeps 'em like new.

soaking pumps in vinegar helps to get rid of calcium build up too, btw.

If the pump is just for circulation, I have to say I like the smaller rios (90, 180) and I have teo BIG (physically) Seio pumps.

But like Eileen said, you can't go wrong with an appropriately sized Maxijet!

if you haven't cleaned out the pump, that may be the problem.

otherwise, maxijets, seios (also made by rio/taam, but seem better built and quieter), and/or eheims all seem like good bets depending on the application.

Just say "NO !" to Rios... do a search here on RC for all of the horror stories of damage done by "Rios gone bad", of which there is alot of.

Eheim would be my first choice, maxi-jet second, although some MJs can also develop vibration/noise over time and all pumps will need preiodic cleaning

thanks for all the feedback. I'll look into Eheims and try to clean my Rios in the meantime.

As far as horror stories with the Rio go, I never did mention that about 3 weeks ago while I was gone for the day, one of my Rio 400s began pumping more powerfully than usual and blew a good portion of my sandbed into one of my corals, killing the coral and stressing out the whole tank for days.
