Need advice on a new skimmer...

That should be ok.

There was some guy on the Octo thread crabing that his skimmer didn't work.

Is it broke in? Yes two weeks no skim. People went down the list of stuff and then the guys coughed up that he was using a MAG 7 for a feed pump on the middle sized Octo.

Duh.

I saw that on there. I was curious how bad of a bubble problem he had with the issue.

Hmm thats my problem then.... lol I am using a Mag 7 would there be a better result using the rio1700 (have these things laying everywhere)

I am having bubbles like mad right now... and alos it seems to be awfully clear at the bottom 6" of the skimmer?? Is this right???

I will take 3-4 days to break in.

6" at the bottom?

I haven't seen one of that model run let don't quite know.

Okay so now i have it hooked up to a Rio 1700 and yeah its like the bubbles don't take up the whole tube. The entire 6" or so from the bottom up is clear. I could probably take a video of it and post it.

I'd get a skimmer that is not in-sump. My ASM skimmer does a great job when it skims but since I don't have auto water topoff for my sump my water level in my sump constantly fluctuates and I'd say a good majority of the time the water level is too low for skimming to be effective.

Chris

If I do decide to go the in-sump route, I will have a chamber in my sump that has a constant water level for the skimmer.

Right now I'm still going back and forth between the normal NW-200 and the recirc NW-150.

Right now I'm leaning towards the recirc 150 for the following reasons:

1) It wont' take as much room in my sump
2) It uses a lower wattage pump
3) I can feed it directly from my tanks overflow.

The NW200 has some advantages though:

1) Slightly Larger capacity
2) Less Complex
3) Cheaper

I need to get one of these ordered, but I just can't decide... :(

For a 125G that you are trying to go SPS with I would stick with the larger 8" bodied recirc. IMO the recirc 150 is to small.

If your going to go with the nw-200 I would really consider the pacific coast 3000, I know the pump is going to take abit more energy but it's alot easier to turn a skimmer down than to wish it had more skimming power. I bought a skimmer rated for a 475 gal tank, i can adjust it to my tanks needs as they change rather than changing skimmer to accomodate the bioload. Not trying to sound pushy, it is your tank you know whats best for it. But I've been in the boat where I slapped myself for buying something for the moment and not buying it for the future. Jason are you sure your pump is moving 750 with the needlewheel? I know the pumps on mine are both 750 gph, but I can't imagine it does that with the impeller thats on there?

Unless you got one of the Octos with the resun pump (rare) the PCI line is exactily the same as the other Octopus skimmers

Billy....my DDNW250 is finally starting to skim somewhat. Maybe another few days and i can finally adjust/tweak this thing. Is there anyway you can make a needlewheel stop skimming (so it doesnt overflow) like you can with say a beckett skimmer?

I would say cut its air off somehow, I am looking at mine wondering what would be best for that exact thing. I was thinking of adding a collection container and then drill/tap the cup on the skimmer itself so when the container is full and it backs up to the skimmer it would cut off the air to the pumps.

Well I checked out my pump, all it says is rated for 3000 l/h

Were going to need a 3000 liter container and an hour of free time.;)

I put a valve of the cup drain and let it fill up the cup. Then just drain as needed. The lid has that lip that drops down over top of the neck wen the cup fill to that point it has to try to lift the lid. I have come home a few time to watery skim but never to water on the floor.

Quite making things so simle. This requires a little less engineering then I was trying to put into it. With the five gallon bucket this thing has for a cup I should be able to skim for a couple days no problem.

Another Skimmer Question...

Another Skimmer Question...

You all have about got me convinced to bite the bullet and go with the Recirc NW200 over the normal NW200, however, I'm still a bit confused on a couple of issues.

As I understand it, the recircs need to be fed with 1.5 times the total volume of the system per hour. So assuming that I've got about 160Gallons in my system, I need to run about 240GPH through the skimmer. My main pump is a QuietOne 4000 which probably pushes 2 - 3 times that much after head loss.

So, do I just tee-off the return and feed part of it to the skimmer and part of it to the sump?

Also, on the in-sump models, I'm confused about the benefits of the bigger pump sizes. I can't remember if it was in this this thread or another one, but someone was saying that if the pump size was too big, it would prevent the skimmer from working properly...

So what is the case where pump size negatively impacts performance of the skimmer?

I'd like to get a new skimmer ordered by tomorrow, so I need to get this figured out!
