Need Advise on a Pump...

Ok... it's time to by a return pump... I'm counting on you all to point me in the right direction... I'm gonna want between 700 and 800 GPH thru the sump. So? What Brand and or Model would you buy if you had it to do over again? Is it worth getting an adjustable? Should I go +1? Input fellas.:uhoh3:

Not worth getting an adjustable IMO when there are so many options available. It's impossible to advise on the size of a pump without knowing the head pressure it's pumping against (there's a handy calculator here: http://www.reefcentral.com/index.php/head-loss-calculator), but the fan favorite is usually Eheim.

Don't go +1, just get the size pump you need. Unlike skimmers, you don't really want extra performance in case a fish dies or the skimmer isn't tuned perfectly or you get some corraline buildup etc. With a pump just reliable performance at the level you need, otherwise you're just needlessly using extra electricity and adding extra heat, not to mention causing extra microbubbles and such :)

the eheim is a great internal, if you are looking for external pump with less than 6' foot head, you can't beat reeflo imo.

The pump will have to deal with 5 head feet. What about Mag Drive? Danner makes a line of pumps called the Pondmaster series. Looks to me to be the EXACT same pump as their Supreme Aquarium series but 20 bucks cheaper. Only difference in the specs is the cord length. That being said, I can get a mag 18 for the price of a mag 12.

Another question is what size my overflow pipe should be if my pump is returning around 800 GPH at 5ft of head. Also, what can I use that's safe to put under my pump to isolate it against vibration.

thanks

at 800 GPH, I'd have 2 1.5" holes for either 2 dursos or a herbie. Not strictly necessary, but it will give you a lot of redundancy if one gets blocked and will help to keep things quiet.

As for the vibration, I just use some silicone (GE silicone I windows and doors) on the bottom of the little plate that comes with it. Works like a charm. Just make sure it's nice and cured before putting it under water :)

+1 for an eheim. either a 1260 or 1262. the 1260 may be a bit small, the 1262 would be about right. I'll be using one for my 120 build. along with a 1500gph (2 x 1.5") overflow from www.glass-holes.com

Mag drive emits way too much heat. Trust me on this. I had a mag 12. My tank temperature was hovering above 81 and water evaporation was about a +gallon a day on a 90g +40 sump. After switching to sicce my tank is 78.5 and quiet. I'm also filling about 6 gallons of auto top off per week instead of the almost 10 before. My mag 12 is used as a water changing unit and transportation. Nothing else.

i have had good luck with my mag 9.5... i just upgraded to a mag 12 i was so impressed 9.5 was submerged the 12 i plumbed external
