Need advise on "opportunity"

I currently have an opportunity to purchase a 200+ gal tank. No stand or hood. It'll cost $300 for the tank with some pumps and stuff thrown in. I believe the tank is a bit more than 200 gal. as the outer dimensions are 72"x24"x36". This shows an outer volume of about 269 gal. and a possible inner volume of 240. I'll double check the dimensions when I see it tomorrow. From what I've seen, tanks this size don't go for prices this low very often.

Whatchall think?

If I let the intimidation kick in, anyone want it?

I say go for it. You can build it up slowly if needed. Of coarse you got to look in on how much its gonna take to get this running such as skimmer, sump, lights, pumps, etc. Then you got to evaluate and see if you want to maintain a tank that size too.

Glass tank. Don't know manufacturer or age. It was pulled from a remodel here in town. There is supposed to be some extra equipment that comes with it like pumps and a skimmer. Don't have brands or anything yet. I'll come back with more info tomorrow.

Russ, thats what I was thinking. Believe it or not, one of the things that bugs me about it is the depth. 36" is pretty deep. I'll have my head in the water moving stuff around! Guess I should stay away from the big triggers. :) Any idea of what it costs to run a dedicated 20A line?

Tim, I can help you out with the stand and canopy. My stand is just about finished. It cost less than $200. One thing to consider is 36" depth, you are looking at a minimum of 400 Watt MH.

It all depends on the situation. Is there an easy access from the panel to the area you want the receptacle. Will there be drywall removal involved? But a straight shot will normally run around $200. I hear yah about the 36" depth bud. Ill definitely need some snorkling gear to reach the bottom of that tank.

Good point Paul. That'll be a lot of money in lighting. What would recommendations be for brand? I've seen a lot of personal opinions with types of lighting. Seems to be split primarily between the 20k and 14k crowds with the occasional 10k in there. Figure I'll have to see a few tanks to determine what I like.

What do you want to keep? If you want a full blown sps tank with clams on the bottom, a lower K bulb would be ideal. 20K for sps and clams no lower than 24" IMO.

I think I am going to try the bulbs Russ is running, in a 12-14K range. Currently, I have 10K with super actinic VHOs.

Yup. I love the 12K Reeflux. I just installed a new pair yesterday so if anybody wants to try the 12Ks, I have a pair thats 8 mo old and still have good life in them. They are 250W HQI DE.

I agree, and you'll need at least 3--one per each 2x2 foot surface area from what I was once told. I have a feeling your electric bill will be substantial when you add the cost of pumps required for adequate water flow.

Still, a 36" tall tank will look really nice.

Well, I've decided not to do it. I checked the tank out. Doesn't appear to be any scratches or anything wrong with it. It includes quite a bit of stuff from a mix of aquariums including some pumps, skimmer, sump and tank. The actual dimensions of the tank are 72" x 18" x 36", so it works out to 200 gal. If anyone is interested, here is the link. I think its still a sweet deal for anyone that could take advantage of it.

I'm still looking for a larger tank, probably around a 150, maybe a 180. I would like a 72" x 24" footprint without extreme height.

There's another one. It's a 65G:
