This is either red coralline or cyano bacteria.. The only thing is, from every picture I've seen of cyano bacteria, it is really stringy and goo-like. This is growing on my substrate, and it looks solid. Have no idea what it is.
Yep cyano and I just got rid of mine. You can run all the gfo and carbon, increase flow and vacuum it out but it will still come back until it runs it's life cycle about 8 week or so then it will go away. I would only pull the mat off once a week as it was easier to get it all up in one sheet. Of course do this with the pumps off.
Until then enjoy the pretty red/purple sandbed you have.
I used to have cyano for several months but now I don't see it any more. I don't know why it vanished; maybe PO4 is too low. My ATS used to be covered with it crowding out the green algae now ATS is green thankfully. You have to keep on battling it until it disappears.
