Need Flame wrasse help!!!

so, after two unsuccesful attempts at keeping male flame wrasse. I have decided to just pick up a second female and them it figure out whats what with my current established female.

Now the question is.. I will be quarantining the new female, but want advice on how to add to the display.. should I;

a) add straight to the display after QT

b) remove the established female, add new female to DT and then add established female after a day or two

c) remove the established female to QT and add both together to DT

when I added my last male, I had to remove the female because she was terrorizing him, after putting her in the sump for a couple days and re-introducing her to the new male, everything was fine. just don't know how it works adding another female.. will she see the newcomer as a threat? or will it just show dominance but nothing serious?

If your current female has already terrorized a new comer, I would not take a chance. Let the newbie get established first.

Just added a pair to my tank and the male is downright evil. Hopefully he will calm his butt down in time. The female is well behaved.

Just thought I would let you know that. I have never heard anything negative about these fish other than the fact that they are delicate shippers.

If I were you I would go with either B or C of your above plan. May be best to remove the current female to QT for a few days rearrange your rockwork a little and add both back at the same time and pray. :)

hm.. thats weird. I've never encounted an aggressive male flame, females once established yes, but males no. Good luck with yours, maybe you can remove him for a day or two and then put him back, just dont give the female too much time by herself..

my new female is now in QT, much smaller than the one in my DT, 2.25" compared to about 3.5", I'm planning on removing the established one and adding them together after 2 days once prazipro treatment is complete. Good news is that it's eating very aggressively and very friendly :)

I would put the newcomer in a clear acclimation container to they can look but don't touch. I believe this is the best way to introduce fairy wrasses to each other.

hm.. sounds alot easier than removing the established one... i'll have to give that some thought as well.. I just don't want the newcomer to be attacked, I have 5 wrasse in the DT currently and have had more before, never had a problem with their aggression with newcomers unless it's of the same species..

agreed. How sure are you that your current established is a female, and not a submale?

the DT female got along fine with my past males and gets chased around every now and then by my male rhomboid. Has all female colors and has kept the same coloration for the past few months..

So, NO ornag at all. Just a pinkish red, right? Ive heard of SO many females flame wrasses that go sub male, and then just wait their chance, and then its war. I had a harem of them in the past, and the terminal male was a maniac- flashing everything all the time. He jumped into the overflow, and in the 24 hours he wasnt in the display, two of the submales started war, and even after he was added back, they all killed each other. Post a pic of the existing female.

it's pinkish red and has been so since I got it, and has a bit of white underneath whereas the males would be yellow/orange. it did attack my old male when i added it to the dt a few months ago but i think it was just being territorial..

SDguy,

Could you point me to one of these clear containers? I have a container similar to what you are saying and in no way would I think it is large enough to house a fairy wrasse even for a short time. Maybe the ones you are talking about are different than what I have.

I had mine made by an acrylic fabricator, but before that, I bought a "critter keeper" from Petsmart, and rigged it to stay put in the tank. That should work fine, and come in a variety of sizes.
