Need Flow?

If you haven't checked out the Koralia magnum pumps, they are most definitely worth checking out! The Magnum6 feels like it's as strong as my mp40, this thing really moves some water! And the price is much better than comparable pumps.

I don't know if its a placebo effect or just a more direct flow pattern, but when a pump rated at 2200gph feels like it moving more water than one rated to move 3400gph, it kinda makes you wonder.

And it seems like everyone is selling these bad boys at 1/2 price right now.

An mp40w(3400gph) is $400 and a magnum 8(3200gph) is $160 shipped. The magnums do not create the undertow like the mp40, but I know what ill be using to supplement my closed loop for sure.

I threw a modded MJ1200 in the tank a couple weeks ago and have been really happy with it. I added a magnet holder this week and it's even better.

You can't even compare the Vortech's price point to a Koralia's. The MP40W can do so much more. Now if all your wanting is to push the same amount of water 1 direction than yes there are cheaper options than the MP40W. The Koralia's that are controllable are more expensive than the Vortechs for 2 of them.

Does the mp40 push water in different directions? All any of them really do is ramp the flow up and down. Imho the only advantage is the smaller in tank footprint. If you spend 400 bucks on a power head of course you want to feel like you made a good investment but I just couldn"t justify it.

I can absolutely compare the two, I own both and make my comparison based off of the water movement that I personally observed just like I was very clear on. I never said the magnum beat the mp40 based on functions, but it certainly does on the dollar for dollar scale come out on top when were talking about flow, which is what I said.

I also have the MP40w and the Magnum 6. The Magnum definitely pushes quite a bit of water but the flow is very pointed and linear, unlike the flow that most corals appreciate and thrive in. The Vortech moves more GPH, and the flow is much wider and gentler, plus as mentioned before the effects of undertow are clearly evident.

Just comparing the flows, I would have to say that I think the MP40w does a much better job than the Magnum 6 (or any other Koralia that I have owned).

For me, I would rather have spent the money for the Magnum 6 on another MP40w, based on flow alone.

Wow... there's where I have to disagree... I have a pair on MP40W's running on the right front and left rear corners in the 350G. They are running at full speed, something I wouldn't dare do in the 180G for fear of blowing water out of the tank... In the 350G, there is amazing current in a clockwise direction - watching food in the tank is like watching a horse race!

The MP40W intrudes into the tank maybe 2 - 3" - the Big Koralia maybe 6-8". And the Koralia, which I love, is still a Koralia - the big ones are a huge presence in your tank - even more intrusive looking than the equivalent Tunze.

It's all about personal preference...

JMHO.

Tony I guess you can say your only comparing GPH rates but on an mp40w your not paying 400 for just the GPH so comparing the prices between the 2 is mute. You can buy a Chevy Cavalier or a Cadillac they both will do the speed limit and get you back and forth from work but you can't compare there prices based on that 1 factor. I think the Koralia's I own are nice products but I don't put them in the same category as a Vortech.

I'm not trying to put down the mp40 in the slightest, it's in a category of it's own. But, with that being said from a pure flow stand point the magnums are certainly worth giving thought to.

As stated above, if my closed loop needs supplementation, it will be done with a couple of magnums.

My mp40 is going to be moved over to the 105 where it will probably offer all the flow that tank needs by it's self.

From what I've read, the K5-8 mags can be used with a controller. I've even seen someone state that they were able to create the undertow effect by those means, though I've never seen video of it. Of course that still doesn't address the size issues.
